I play a load of MD/Genesis games on my phone's emulator (the brilliant Picodrive) but I find many of them to be lacking in substance and depth now I've been spoilt by modern games; can you lot recommend me some games with more to them than jump and shoot?

please name me some modern games with depth because i rlly cnt think of many... halo, smash bros...in terms of commercial games. Most tend to consist of button mashing or pointing and clicking with some next gen graphics to cover it up.
Flight Sims, driving sims, RTS, tactical shooters, RPGs etc

Will that do?

Branflakes: Thanks, I'll check it out.

Shining Force 2 - Tactical rpg with strategical turn based battles ie based on a turn based strategic map. Absolutely fantastic :) There's also Herzog Zwei which is a wierd rts/action game, plus if you want some more sophisticated platformers you've got Alien Soldier, Gunstar Heroes and Dynamite Headdy.

If you want a puzzle game check out Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine - Puyo Puyo's american release. The music's ace and the puzzling's great.

I miss my megadrive...

I've already completed SF2 on my phone, but a good choice! I may put HZ on their as I remember enjoying that.

I Haven't tried any of your other suggestions so will definitely check them out, thanks!

I second Toejam and Earl. Great games. How about James Pond: Robocod? I can't remember if there's much story or anything, but I do remember it being fun.

Just thought of another one: Super Fantasy zone. It's basically a shmup, but you gain money during the course of the game which can then be spent on upgrades and weapons for your ship. Really good fun.

Dynamite Headdy is one of my favourite MD platform games. I remember it being very hard though.

Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Phantasy Star IV and Columns are good too.

Dynamite Headdy is a really good call. I can't ever remember making it past those bloody puppets controlled by that puppet master.

It's technically a sonic game, but Sonic Spinball, while lacking real "depth" certainly was both fun and also simple enough to become horribly addictive. It's basically pinball, but moreso.

I also second Phantasy Star IV.

Oh God, I'd forgotton about that bit. Bad memories. Was that before or after climbing the tower of death while fighting a robotic cat thing?

Contra: Hard Corps. Just how hardcore are you, boy? The japanese sissies needed three "hit points" per life. You play it like a man who plays CONTRA goddammit, one shot and yer dead as shit. Probably the hardest Contra game as long as you can block out those pretty bad parts of Contra 3 where you played from an isometric point of view. Multiple character choices each with different weapons, multiple branching paths, a storyline and multiple endings makes this my favorite Contra, personally.

Splatterhouse 2. Not that much depth, but I have to suggest it for being one of the first really good horror-typed videogames. Also, one of the most underrated series of games ever, and number 2 happens to be the best one. So don the hockey mask, grab a 2 by 4 and smack some zombies messily into the walls, damnit! The game's pretty difficult, but not stunningly so.

Streets of Rage 2. I say 2 because 3 had the stupid robo-geezer and the kangaroo. Streets of Rage 2 is a classic beat-em-up that's plain simple-minded fun, and that just happens to have a bit more depth than several beat-em-ups ever could (the only deeper one I can think of for a home console? Turtles in Time).

I remember that too. I believe it was after you'd fought the cat on the tower of death and on a lift. I played that on an emulator with save games and still couldn't beat it :(

Check out Herzog Zwei.

It is a pretty early RTS that was really underappreciated in its day. In fact some argue that it is the first modern RTS, in that it predates Dune II.

Also take a look at Flashback.
