Okay, let me start things off by saying that I absolutely loved Megaman Legends 1 and 2. Those two games, combined with the X series, were what made me believe that I would end up buying every single Capcom game ever made. Does anybody else remember the Capcom of the old days? The company that produced some of the greatest franchises ever made? What happened to it? The Capcom of today isn't the same Capcom from my childhood.
The Capcom of today isn't the same company that produced the Viewtiful Joe series, Okami, Megaman Legends, Breath of fire, and far too many other fantastic games and franchises for me to count them all. Today's Capcom is all about treating it's consumers like dirt, outsourcing their main IPs to other developers, and generally doing things that have a tendency to piss off their fan base.
And that brings us to today's topic: The fact that 'GetMeOffTheMoon' has now met it's goal and has 100,000 supporters behind it. At first, my heart soared with delight as I realized that Capcom couldn't possibly ignore such a passionate and dedicated fanbase, not when the whole reason for canceling Megaman Legends 3 in the first place was 'lack of fan support'... Right?
... Right?
Well, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that there isn't really all that much hope for one of my favorite PS1 IPs of all time. I mean, sure, there's always that tiny chance that Capcom will listen, and that they will actually do something magical with the franchise, and they could prove that they're taking that first shaky step towards redemption in the eyes of their fans... But is that what would really happen?
As much as it genuinely hurts me to say so, I'm thinking no. Let's just take a look at Capcom's recent track record to help me prove my point. Here are the things that my skeptical, jaded, cynical gamer mind has led me to believe could happen to Megaman Legends 3.
-Capcom could just outright ignore it. If we're going to be honest with ourselves, this is the most likely to actually happen out of all of the options. They've done this sort of thing before. Back when the Final Fight DRM was a huge issue, all Capcom did was give it a single hand wave, a single statement, and buried the whole issue. What's stopping me from believing that this will be any different? I don't think that Capcom cares about what their fans say anymore, they're going to do whatever they want regardless and pretty much outright ignore whatever we say.
-Capcom could monetize the piss out of this game. Let's face it, the fanbase for Megaman Legends 3 is one of the most dedicated and passionate fanbases I've ever actually been an active part of, to the point where they'll buy damn near anything that Capcom puts out with the franchise's name on it. Now, I don't exactly know how well the 3DS's online shop works, but if it functions at least halfway decently, I wouldn't exactly put it past Capcom to make it an 'episodic' game while charging us anywhere in the $15~30 range for each installment (kinda like what Sega is doing with Sonic 4). We've already seen this done with Asura's wrath and Street Fighter X Tekken, what's stopping them from doing it with a game that they KNOW will bring in all that precious fan money?
-Capcom could outsource it. Again, they've done this before. They handed over Devil May Cry to a 3rd party developer and rumor has it that yet ANOTHER of their franchises is going to be outsourced, this has yet to be elaborated upon or confirmed yet though. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure if this is a bad thing or not. With all the problems that Capcom is having recently, perhaps it actually would be a good idea to hand this off to a different company, as long as the company does the franchise justice and remembers why all of the Megaman Legends fans care so much about it. Maybe this is just me being too jaded to give anybody a chance at anything, but I can't help but be afraid that if they outsource it, we'll suddenly have a dark and angsty Megaman trigger that resents humanity after spending 12 years on the moon... Oh... and he's an alcoholic now too. Oh, and it's a cover based 3rd person shooter with none of the sense of wonder and energy that made the original 2 games so fun.
Like I said, could just be me being paranoid and cynical though.
-Capcom could just not care. Let me fix that header, if none of the rest of the things on this list come true, and Megaman Legends 3 somehow makes it through the strainer unmolested by Capcom's recent trends, they WILL not care enough to actually make it the project that they want. They've cancelled it once before, they tried to shut us up with a hand wave little excuse from left field, so what is there to make me believe that they could ever care enough to actually make this the game that we want? If they actually cave in to fan demand and actually make this game, I would put high odds on it just being a little cobbled together... thing... that was just made to silence the fans so that Capcom could act like the victims again at the inevitable outrage.
"This isn't what we wanted!!!"
"We gave you your game and you're still mad. Nothing will make you happy, you're too entitled."
To be honest, it's the fourth item on this menu that terrifies me the most. The other 3 I could live with, but if they make Megaman Legends 3 and it doesn't at least do justice to the first 2 games, then that's even worse then not having the game at all. We've already seen scary signs about Capcom making unpleasant changes to core franchises... Hell, they outright said that Resident Evil 6 is going to be more about the 'action' then the 'horror' (Gears of Evil 6) and that is a recipe for disaster in and of itself. Different topic for a different day though.
What do you guys think? Maybe I'm just too tired of being jerked around by major companies to think that any of them can do anything right anymore, but I seriously think I have some valid reasons to be worried here. I think that the hardest thing to bear would be for me to get my hopes up, get all hyped up and ready for this game to come out, only to then be heartbroken again. Please don't get me wrong, I want to love this game, I want to love this game and wish for it really really badly, but I just don't see everything going as smoothly as others do.
I'd type more to try and make more sense of all these random thoughts I'm having on the matter, but I'm really tired right now and I've already typed enough to ensure that none of you read this anyway, so I'm just going to cut it off here and add some more later if clarification is needed.
Regardless of your opinion, thank you for your time.
