Megaupload, one of the largest file-sharing sites on the web, has just been shut down. Amazingly, this means that 4% of the internet has been eradicated in one swift blow.

Admittedly, Megaupload was mainly used for piracy and similar illegal activities, and so it could be said that its demise isn't really a big deal.

On the other hand, it makes me very uneasy to think that the US was able to close the whole thing down so easily. It also seems too much of a coincidence that this has happened right alongside the contentious SOPA and PIPA bills.

So I suppose what I'm really saying, is that I don't mind so much about the end of Megaupload itself; what I mind is what it represents. Could this be an indication of similar things soon to come?

I'd be really interested in any thoughts...
