Microsoft ignores loyal supporter

I am a loyal Microsoft customer. While I may not like all of their products, I was exited about the Xbox 360 back when I was 14 and worked long hours all summer long for 450 dollars, just enough to buy my own. As soon as I had the money, I rushed to the store and bought my Xbox 360, Kameo, and Oblivion.

I was overjoyed. I had never owned a console before, and I became a die-hard Xbox fan. I withstood red-rings of death, bugs, countless updates, and even the jeers of my anti-microsoft friends. When the Wii came out with its motion controls, I stuck with Xbox. When the PS3 showed up with better graphics and a blu-ray player, I stuck with Xbox. I bought over 40 games for the Xbox, and most recently a Kinect. I trusted Microsoft.

However, my trust was betrayed today.

Today, when I tried to get onto Xbox Live, I had to download a new update. An update that my Xbox refused to allow. I immediately called Tech Support and told them of my problem. 45 minutes and three operators later, I was told that my Xbox was too old to play the new games, and that I would have to buy a new one to access Xbox Live.

I was speechless. I tried negotiating. No, she said, Microsoft won't refurbish your Xbox so you can play the new game. No, she said, not even if you pay them too. No, she said, you can't access Xbox Live anymore. Ever. Not even to redeem the DLC that you paid for.

"How could they have done this to me?" I thought. I've been loyal to their company for over 5 years now. I never once tried to hack the system, or get games illegally. I bought games new whenever I had the chance, and I bought a lot of games. I'd spent hundreds of hours using their products, keeping it in good condition. I'd supported them when the Xbox 360 was just coming out. People like me MADE the Xbox.

And now, we were being cast aside. Forced to buy the same product again, because ours was too old, too crude. Not up to the task. Well you know what? I'm keeping my Xbox. I'm going to play the games I bought, fair and square, and someday, maybe after I've worked all summer long, I'll go out and buy a new console.

But it still won't make it any less unjust, or any less painful.

Wow, that cant be right, that's bordering on illegal, and I haven't heard about this before.

But if its true then, damn, that's cruel.

Ok, I really doubt they meant to cripple tons of consoles on purpose, or maybe they expected people to have bought new ones because it's most likely that old ones would've permanently packed it in by now.

I hope you haven't bought a new one yet.
And that woman on customer support? An idiot.
I'm pretty sure that the 360s that were outdated by that update are meant to be replaced with new 360 Slims, or something. There was a news post about it.
If your 360 was killed by the update, then they should replace it. It seems you just happened to be put on the line of someone clueless. Or something.
Ah, here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/110161-Firmware-Update-May-Break-Your-Old-Xbox-360-UPDATE] is the article. Give it a read, it may help.

Actually, they said that they'll give you a new one. See Greyfox's post.

So, yeah. They haven't abandoned you yet.

If they refuse to refurbish your xbox then that's morally wrong. If it's not illegal. If you payed for an xbox that promised Xbox Live and something they do prevents you from accessing one of the advertised features then they should definitely refund you/ refurbish the console. It may come under false advertising.

But don't throw your old xbox away. It's possible if you kick up enough of a fuss and keep insisting to talk to higher authorities they may give way and refurbish it. Or if it affects enough people then public pressure may force them to help you

Hmmmm... the pieces are starting to fall together in my paranoiac mind. First, Microsoft hires hackers to dismantle Sony, thereby removing their biggest competitor in the console market. Next, they brick old 360s and refuse to replace them, figuring that "You'll be back; where else would you go?" Diabolical!

Seriously, though, wtf?

I asked if Microsoft would send me a new console or update my current one. I was told that I needed to buy a new console. They're arguing that the reason that the update is not working is because my Xbox is hacked... which is not true. I think they are covering their... assets here.

By the way, the woman on the phone was actually quite nice about it, until she started to keep repeating "You will have to buy a new console" over and over.

If it's not hacked, send it to them as proof. I would.

Similar problem with my old Xbox. Something fried inside of it. I call the Support line, inform them of the problem and(six holds, three hours, and seven people later) I am told my warranty had expired the day before I called and that Microsoft wanted $150 to fix my machine. Might I add that the Arcade system had just come out for $200. I tried to discuss it a little more with them, hoping they could extend my warranty one day or just lower the price. Another person switch and I am told the repair is now going to cost $175 because they think my Xbox has two problems. So I tell the man I am talking to wait a moment. I put the phone on speaker, open my window and chuck my 360 out of it and onto the drive way below. I then said goodbye and hung up. 2 months later I won a free 360. Life works in funny ways.

Oh, that's fucking perfect. I haven't fired up my 360 in a while and THIS is what I have to look forward to. The last update I got didn't affect my system in any way, so either I'm lucky or next in line.

Here's for a free 360!

Obsolete equipment is obsolete, why should they replace it for free? We're talking about a cheap console that you had for 5 years. For me to keep up with the new games i have to get newer hardware almost each year for my PC. As much as a console has standardized specs it's still 5 years old, good for trash bin.

My problem is not that my console is old. If Microsoft came out with a new console, I would buy that and get games for it. A new console entails better graphics, faster processing, and countless man-hours by designers.

No, what they are doing is making an update, something that takes very little effort, which stops my Xbox from using Xbox Live ever again. Not just that, it stops my Xbox from using any other Xbox 360 games that they produce. They should either let my console skip the update and use Xbox Live again, or they should give me a new console so that I can use the contractually obligated function again.
