I like Minecraft, and while the graphics are simple and nice do you believe that one day there will be a game that is based on the Minecraft mechanics (mining, building, survival etc) but with visuals more modernized? Like actually leaving the "cube" aspect out of the game.

I do believe that one day some company will pickup most of Minecraft's mechanics and aplly them with a more visually "normal" game since that visual boost may be enough to make the people that bougth Minecraft consider buying another game that is similar to what they already have.

In the future we will have Minecraft: Revolution, it will contain virtual reality and photo realistic graphics :)

I think the block idea is what helps minecraft. It makes construction easy, and leaves more room for creativity.
To me at least minecraft would not be minecraft without blocks.

The thing about the basic graphics, (other than the fact that I can actually run it on my computer,) is that it helps the creativity side of things. Simple textures and designs are easier to make fit together and look good.

I don't see this happening, really.

Minecraft's game mechanics revolve around having a cube-y environment.

I'm sure we'll see a buggy DRM-filled 3D version called "Mining construction" released by EA within the next decade and a half.

On a sidenote, I had to try 8 times with the text and twice with the sound before I could type in the captcha correctly and be allowed to post.

I think you're alone in thinking better graphics and removing the block aesthetic will improve minecraft.
In the meantime, I reccommend you download this mod for minecraft - it's a 64x64 texture pack.

Well Minecraft can only work with it's blocky nature, it brings accuracy yet extreme simplicity and ease when building.

You could add a couple of elements such as triangles to allow smoother constructions, but the simple elements are essential to Minecraft.
But other eyecandy could still go very far, like smooth water/lava flow, better textures, better shading, better tool/weapon models, not to mention howmuch crafting potential there still is.

Are you condoning shameless cash-ins?

There's no point, and having everything measured in cubes gives a simple sense of scale that's easy to plan builds with.

If there was actual physics, and actual challenge to building something, and the end result didn't look like a Duplo set. Minecraft might actually be worth playing.

As it stands, sure, I could build something huge and complex, but it's only going to take time. There's no difficulty in finding the right building materials. No sort of planning involved. No penalty for dying except running back to you body. There's no difficulty in making sure that your building won't collapse in on itself. If you have a bow, creepers aren't even a problem anymore (and they're a relatively minor one to begin with). Mistakes can be reversed in less than ten seconds, and if all else fails you can just download mods that do everything for you anyway.

People who still want the straight-block method are just going for the whole hipster "you just don't GET it" angle.

I'm just wondering if you're ever tied Garry's Mod for half life 2 and tried to build something in that? Its kinda fun, but anything you make ends up looking like scrap welded together (which it is lol) I agree with soem of your points, but I think the cubeyness gives minecraft a distinct visual consistency... Just my own opinion anyway.

I think the game looks good as is, and the blocky style is a defining feature. However, I feel that there could be more and better-defined biomes, like rainforests with appropriate animals, exotic trees, and undergrowth that can be cleared faster with a Machete tool.

Also, some Avatar-style full-on floating islands wouldn't hurt either.

The only real problem with Garry's mod is that since the things you're combining togther were never intended to be combined together, you can end up with a glitched, twitchy mess if you make a wrong move. You can do some really amazing things with it, provided that you have enough time and energy, but that sort of experience has to be built from the ground-up.

You'll have to convince investors that you can make the game.

But yeah, Minecraft's opening up a new genre and I'd be surprised if others don't capitalize on it's success with knock-offs.

I can't wait for that day. Then I'll be able to actually punch a creeper in the face as revenge! D:<

OT: I don't think it'll work out well if it does happen. >_>

I think you're missing the whole point of Minecraft. Building in Minecraft is meant to be fun, not hard. If you want something hard, you go play something else. Not every game has to be hard.

No. People want the straight-block method because it's easy to use. Some people don't want to have to read through a book or online tutorial to build something in a program like Autocad.
Ah yes, the "you just don't GET it, you pleb"

I did go play something else. Because Minecraft is boring as hell. Things can be accessible while still providing a challenge. Most games manage to do this. Minecraft doesn't. Therefore: it's boring.

Sigh.

Minecraft simply would not work without the "block" design.
Think about it, the blocks make it easier to build things. You can get a few logs, turn them into planks, and build a house in the space of an hour or two.

If it were done any other way, it just wouldn't function as a game, it'd be a map editor and nothing else.
