Minecraft advice?

I just bought minecraft today, I've been playing it for a little bit but i still don't know how to get the most enjoyment out of the game. (P.S: How do you craft a torch, I put the coal and stick in the order minecraft wiki told me about but it's not doing anything.

The coal is supposed to go right above a stick and should yield four torches.

I tried doing that. It wouldn't work

Ah thank god, I don't have to make a new thread:
Can anyone tell me how to get it to run faster? I love the game but I don't get why it's so jumpy. I have the framerate limited and the view distance to tiny yet it still runs jumpy. WoW runs smoother for crying out loud

?I would try setting the graphics to fast, not fancy.
And yes, i did finally get them to work. I was evidently using flint instead of coal.

yeah, that's bloody awful that.

In crafting table or by hand... Put the Coal in the top left part of the box then a stick on the bottom left box (Make sure it is a coal and a stick)
