Minecraft Survival: Would a seige mode work, do you think?

While the current game is great, it's primarily a building game with the occasional monster thrown in at night. Not counting suicide shrubs and endermen moving your blocks, it doesn't really have much of an effect on your buildings.

You build a massive temple, you make a fort, a steampunk floating city and that's it. My idea is, what if you were given ten days to build your fort.

Ten days, nine nights. You have the standard skeletons, shrubs, etc etc spawning at night and underground. But on day ten, the 'safety' period ends. Night time no longer means mobs spawning outside and wandering around, the past ten days have given them a taste of your blood and now they're zeroing in on you.

Easily solved by a lava trench or such, but there are ways to get around that, if the Endermen would build bridges for other mobs and such.

How would this work for everyone? Being forced to build traps, TNT bombs and cacti mazes. What other weapons do you think might need to be made, besides the bow and swords?

Could the creepers blow up at whim in this mode or do they still only do that when you're close? Because if it's the latter I'm thinking just a really big wall.

I don't think it'd be hard to code the creepers. If you're close enough to aggro them, 10-15 blocks or whatever it is, and they can't get to you, they'd suicide. It'd make it easier for the monsters to work together, the creepers blowing up the wall and letting the zombies in.

yes, it is very well doable. For the time being, I suppose one could resort to making a mod.

That would work, in another game. What you're suggesting is a tower defense mode in a game primarily based around exploration and building. It would never be implemented well and besides, giving how lazy Mojang is I'd much rather them focus on SSP and SMP. As it stands, the game is miles from being finished and in its current form Minecraft is just a bunch of random unfinished ideas thrown together in a pot and mixed with pixie juice. Do you really want more of that?

I'm really starting to doubt Mojang's ability to actually develop Minecraft. Instead of focusing on what they've already got they're just throwing in more decent but unfinished concepts into a game that is already full of that shit. This has been going on since Infdev. On the other hand, in the past 6 months a group of modders managed to create Notch's Sky Dimension and then some. What has Mojang done in these past 6 months? They've announced a new game whilst developing another game.

I had a half-formed idea that it'd be neat to, on a shared server, have each player have one life. When they died, they'd respawn somewhere in the vicinity of a player as their choice of critter and from that point can keep coming back. This sounds a good bit like what I've heard of Gears of War's Beast mode, though I've not played it.

Anyway, it becomes a sort of 'Last man standing' where you'd have some more intelligent creatures to defend against. Regular creatures would still spawn, so one couldn't assume that every critter had a human intelligence behind it. Players would weigh playing co-operatively against building in weaknesses they could take advantage of when they died, or possibly building solo hidey-holes to retreat to.

*shrug* Half-formed idea and I'd be delighted if somebody else ran with it and created something cool.

If it kept getting progressively harder every day, this would be incredibly awesome, especially with loads of players. I think it'd all end in a final showdown in an obsidian keep, then the amount of days you lasted being the highscore.

There's a Mine4Dead mod [http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/501833-173-mine-4-dead-v080/] where swarms of enemies come after you every night and try to destroy a shrine you are supposed to protect. In fact, each night doesn't end until you defeat the current wave of enemies.

I hope this does not come off as self promoting (I typically read and do not post), but here is something like that, that my server hosts every once and a while. http://vanillacraft.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=1422&p=14818#p14818

The gist of it being, you spend sometime building up your base or whatever with a group of friends, then our version of "hard mode" gets turned on. (Different types of "mobs", progressively harder settings, etc) The last man standing is the winner. Though that has changed a bit since we incorporated a party system for a better team play...

Anyhow, now that the 1.8 thingy is done, and we have finished programming a few essential systems, we will probably start hosting said event again.

As I have been building a massive defensive wall for my soon to be kingdom, I've been thinking about this. It would be a fun mode. Maybe Notch would introduce siege mobs just for the mode, like trolls that can destroy walls and aerial enemies. :D
