Back in my teen years I used to listen to bands like Offspring and Silver Chair, basically the modern music that was popular at the time and for some reason I just refused to listen to classic rock and pop music. I think I just thought since it is old it couldn't be as good but one day I accidently tuned the radio to Gold FM and Paranoid from Black Sabbath came on, I never heard a song as awesome as that and it was like a whole new world opened up to me!

I also disliked KISS, Dio, Michael Jackson and Bob Dylan just because my Dad didn't like them but then I gave them a chance and they are amazing.

So my question is, have you ever hated a musician for watever reason then discovered later on that you actually like their music? How could you just hate a musicians music anyway? They are just making a living creating songs for a particular audience!

(Please do not go on about music you hate, this a thread about something you used to avoid and thats it!)

I'm guilty of that too, But not for oldies or old rock but for hip hop. I grew up in a metal head/punk life style. I met guy who introduced to me a side of hip hop i never knew and now I love the stuff.

When I was younger I didnt like Marilyn Manson. I hadnt heard any of his music but I'd heard from other people that he was a freak and a horrible man but when I listened to his music I loved it,and after looking at some of his interviews I saw he was a really intelligent guy.

When I was about 10 or so, I could listen to Metallica and Ozzy without any real problems, but I totally hated bands that used growling as vocals.

On reflection now, 8 years later, I suppose it was my religious state of mind.

Now, having left the church after seeing what christianity really is (no offence there to anyone), I listen to pretty much every metal band there is, as long as the music's good.

I try not to stick with just one genre though - I still listen to other stuff like The Eagles and various orchestral tracks. However, I've yet to find a single hip-hop or rap song that I was able to like. I don't hate the genre per se, I just hate the the current artists. Some songs do have enjoyable sections, however let down by the rest of the song.

I am not big on Hip-Hop but the first rap song I ever heard is Gangsters Paradise which is what got me into the genre, ever heard that song before?

Summed up my musical taste nicely.

I have broadened my musical palette, as it were. Of late I started listening to artists like Saritah and The Waifs, very melodical and light.. strange mix of blues and country. I would normally only ever listen to music with a heavy rhythm or base section (drummer and a tuba player.. can you really blame me?).

And since I started playing in a Jazz orchestra I've gotten hooked on it. I never hated it before just never got into it. But after playing it and understanding the composition, awww insanely good stuff.

I have never given jazz a chance, could you possibly recommend a jazz artist you like?

John Coltrane and Miles Davis are a good place to start.

Not hate at all, but at some point I decided that most non-metal/not fast'n'heavy music completely boring and pointless. Since picking up the guitar (and playing it badly, still) I really learnt to appreciate how much skill and hard work goes into making music.

Take classical. I can't write one song for one instrument. How the hell could I ever organise an entire orchestra?? That's talent if you ask me.

there is also Al Di Meola and Stanley Clarke and also to give a local person for the Escapist i'll say Branford Marsalis as well, tho Wynton is pretty good too

I've always tried to be open to different music since I first sneered at Daft Punk before realising how mind-bendingly awesome they are. I try to at least give everything a chance now.

I never liked Marilyn Manson, initially. But, after seeing some interviews... He's a bright guy and used his business major to great success, marketing himself. Then I realized it wasn't Manson that I disliked, but his consumer base.
Yes Manson is a very intelliteg guy. You are right on with that one.

I remember REM bashing in my earlier years, but now i realized how stupid it was because I would listen to their songs all the time. I called them ex-lax hippies.

As a younger teen I used to hate oldies, mostly because my parents listened to them, and how could they of all people have good taste, you know? Anyway I classic rock is one of my favorite genre's now... Sans KISS and Wacko Jacko... Both just suck IMO
