Alright, so awhile ago my friends and I decided it would be cool if we all got and played an MMORPG, the only problem is that we're picky ( and by that I mean I want war and guns, another guy wants magic, another wants a modern universe, and another wants free-to-play)

So Escapists, what would you reccomend?

also it has to be able to run on most pcs, and not be old, and not be runescape

I don't know any gun-y MMOs, buut my only real suggestion is Guild Wars, to be truthfully honest. That is, if you don't mind the part where you buy the entire game for 40 bucks and is totally free to play forever afterward. They have a free trial on the site, though. However, it only allows you to try the tutorial area of the Prophecies campaign. It's got swords, bows, magic, the works. No guns, though. They will, however, have guns in Guild Wars 2.

Anarchy Online might be worth a look.

It is old, but still kicking and meets all criteria. It is Funcom's baby. So many people (myself included) long for a sequel. I played it for 6-7 years starting around '98.

Other then that, join the club of people waiting for Guild Wars 2.

An MMO with: Guns, war, magic, modern technology, free to play, brand new... Sounds like you want Guild Wars 2.

Check these out:

Buy to Play, so you'll have to buy the box, but there's no sub fee.
The game isn't out yet (best guess so far is early 2012, but the devs aren't talking), so it's definitely new.

But for something available now... hm.
Magicka sounds like it would suit your needs pretty well. I hear it's pretty cheap on Steam, but is only up to 4 player...
Guild Wars 1 works nicely too. No guns per se, but it's very inexpensive, and opens up some free stuff in GW2.

DCU Online is apparently going F2P soon, modern setting, guns, superpowers and magic might want to keep an eye on that.

Although it is old, (just hit it's 10th anniversary) Anarchy Online fits what you are looking for. It has guns, magic (nano programs), is modern, OK it is future, but that is just ultra-modern, and it is free to play. (You can purchase the expansion packs, which will cause the game to require a monthly subscription, but the game has more then enough content for free players). Add to that a user-inspired community (trends and words that were created by players for use in the game have found their way on in-game items), the ability to work with funcom as a player and, my personal favorite, you can dual wield pistols. I don't know why I like that so much, but I really do.

Check it out: http://www.anarchy-online.com

The graphics are dated, but once you get a feel for the game, you hardly notice it. At least I hardly notice it.

Double thread merged.

Have you tried LOTRO or Forsaken World? I know there's no guns in there, but they're free to play and have magic. xD

They run alright on my laptop, and this thing can barely play Alien Swarm. Maybe you and your friends should test run a few, until you find one you're all okay with?

The only one I can think of that has all those things is Shin Megami Tensei Online. Maybe you could give that a look?

City of Heroes is going F2P next week. That'll give your guns, spells, anything else you want really.

Fallen Earth goes F2P next month. That'll give you lots of guns (and swords, and sledgehammers, or golf clubs...) Not many spells though, and elves are shot on sight.

No, really they are. It's in the loading screen tips.
