I tried to Google MOBA and this is what i found. I still dont know what you guys are talking about but the way i see it, people who go to this museum must be kinda mean :p
MOBA is a game style similar to an RTS since it was created first as a mod for Warcraft 3 MOBA stands for Massively Online Battle Arena.
Close. It's actually Multiplayer Online Battle Arena. Considering that everything is instanced and the largest gametype is a 5V5, it really doesn't qualify as an MMO. If it did, CoD would be an MMO because of the ridiculous number of people who are on at any given time. That said, the description is pretty accurate. It's basically what happens when you mix a Blizzard style RTS with the combat from a Blizzard style MMO, and then throw in objectives (which boil down to RTS versions of attack/defend and conquest mode) to make it a bit more interesting. Each player only controls one unit, and while there are other units in the game, they're all AI controlled.

the reason is delegation of blame. Because of the environment created by the genre, most people are worried that they will get ragged on for underperforming. This leads them to point out other people's flaws to detract from their own. When someone calls you a noob or a feeder and they arent doing so hot themselves, just politely inform them that they aren't exactly pro and, if you feel so inclined, tell them to shut the fuck up.

"and that's 6, gentlemen, how exceptionally horrible"

That actually is pretty bad. Unless you are 3-5 kills above your deaths, that is bad.

It won't stop. MOBAs attract this kind of attention because they're competitive, a feeder/newb/noob/whatever on one team can be worse than dead weight and they require a significant time investment (mostly. Dunno about LoL or HoN, but DotA had games generally ranging from 30-60 minutes for me, and I was at the very very unprofessional level).

DotA2 is not likely to change this any significant amount.

Shame, since the community of LoL is what's stopping me from playing a genre I otherwise quite enjoy.
DotA 2 beta player here; there are a few bad apples in it already but well, pick a game that doesn't have an asshole fanbase for the most part.
Personally I think it's part of the learning curve, it's like going to the swimming pool and not expecting to get wet. When you're throw into a group of 5 people randomly and you're dropping the ball you are going to get told about it.

I side with.

You guys are the ones that need to chill. "Scum of the earth", "should be exterminated"? You're talking like these people are committing genocide, instead of being punks.

Tiresome, yes. But nothing else.
This guy, right here.

They may not be committing acts as henious as genocide, but it would still be somewhat amusing to see these people tried for war crimes.

I am genuinely surprised that you actually think you can stop this and that it is a problem with a possible solution it is online competitive gaming and the loud minority will always be heard. People being dicks in a competitive environment is not unique to video games and will never go away.

Don't hate the player hate the game.

I love LoL, while I understand that there are bad apples that you come across, the bulk of the community is not bad.

It's just that most people have certain expectations after 30 levels and roughly 100 games. I've yet to call anyone bad; I try to help out people as often as I can if they're having trouble. But that doesn't mean I haven't seen how bad some people are, it's like there is no sentient thought involved sometimes (mostly from one of my friends). In a team game your side is only as strong as your weakest player, in MOBAs that weakness is very evident.

Not supporting individuals bad mouthing players who are playing poorly, we all have bad games, and some just aren't as skilled as others. Just my take on it, but I believe it's more an issue with matchmaking than anything else.

Sticks and stones my boy...
Yep. I used to respond to these threads with "Well what did you expect, it's a MOBA." Then I actually started playing online, instead of just at LAN parties. How do people who are ostensibly regular online gamers even get offended by that crap? There's no voice chat, so all of the "abuse" involves people who don't know how to spell throwing out comically bad insults. And you don't even see it in every match; it seems like 99% of the players either don't trash talk at all, or they do, but it's the kind of trash talk you see in /any/ online game. The other 1% are apparently 12 years old and have only recently learned how to swear.

Besides, it's text based. Ever since voice chat was introduced, I've completely stopped paying attention to the chat logs in games. I mean, I look at them from time to time, but I have to make a conscious effort /not/ to tune them out. How much of an effort do the rest of you have to make to ignore them?
u nailed it. at least, for LoL which is more evolved than DotA and has systems for punishing abusive players. i havent played any of the others, but from what i understand HoN is similar to LoL in that way, and the initial cost deters people only playing to troll. there's far worse communities out there in gaming, IMO

2 kills. I'm new, no need for nit-picking.

I nit pick everything, but I don't mean it in a bad way. Most people are dicks on MOBA's, while I do point out the bad stuff people do (whenever my friends play at least), I also tell them how to improve on it.

Pretty much what I meant to say. I was playing for about 30 minutes when I can't take it anymore.

My friend and I joined the lowest skill level game, turns out it was full of people creating new accounts just to "pwn scrubs".

I got called a "n00b" or "feeder" every time I die (and that's 6, gentlemen, how exceptionally horrible).

In the end I quit, not because our team couldn't possibly win, but the fact that my teammates were some of the worst-manner people out there.

My friend stayed in the game though, and probably took 5 times the punishment I took, because leaving the game was bad etiquette! I actually feel sorry for him.

What will we do to stop this nonsense?
The report option is there for a reason. If you dont use it, well you really dont have a right to complain about peoples behavior since you are not actively trying to discourage/stop it. At least thats my opinion on the matter.

To start I really only play League of legends and have never played HoN or Dota and have no plans to play Dota2 at this time. Im pretty happy with LoL so I dont need another game. Anyway, the thing you have to understand about Moba games is it requires a team effort from everyone. No game, not even beginner bot games can be won alone so its easier for people to get aggrivated when they see someone constantly dying which directly helps the other team

This does not excuse the people who constantly troll others but it is something to keep in mind. For what its worth there are a large number of good individuals out in the LoL community and I suspect the same is true for HoN and Dota. However what your seeing is the trolls and the people who give up as soon as anything goes wrong. On top of that we tend to remember the bad things more clearly giving a perception of something being worse then it really is

Your experiences might be dead on but I have a feeling that this was 1 or 2 people in each game that made all these comments. Not the entire team

I didn't say 'They should be exterminated!'. I just said that was the only way to 'improve' the MOBA community. And it is.

To be honest, i think people go into a MOBA expecting some level of hostility. It's almost like an expected custom. It reminds me of this bar in a book i read. It's in the arse end of nowhere. The patrons come to drink cheap shit and be spoken to like even worse shit. It's a craphole. But at the same time, they choose to go there for that very reason. Some people just enjoy that sort of crass atmosphere and revel in it. They don't care so much for petty niceties. They go there for the sole purpose of abusing and being abused. It's certainly not to everyone's palette, and like in the book, makes no bones about reflecting this.

I'm not sure what you guys are talking about. For one thing, if you've died twice or more, then stop feeding. You get full xp whether or not you actually kill the minion, and if you're doing really bad, it's probably better to jungle instead. The thing is that, the more you feed them, the stronger they become, and as such one person can bring down the whole team. Also, I would recommend you train against the bots, partly because you won't run into smurfs after levels 5, and even less when you hit level 10.

The MOBA communities are some of the worst in all of gaming. I don't know about other MOBAs but in LoL there is an ignore option. Open up the scoreboard and click on the little chat icon besides their score, you will no longer see any messages from them.

If somebody is being a dick then I usaully just ignore them so I don't have to listen to them prattle on, I would recommend you do the same. It's a fun game, you just have to be able to ignore the awful community.
