I love Gryphons to but I find it ironic that people misspell them alot. Don't take it the wrong way and I totally agree on your choice.

OT:

I love Dragons, however its quite easy to make a terrible looking dragon.

Here is an example of an AWESOME Dragon:

This is not a TERRIBLE dragon:

A well made dragon is one that shows off its features to give it a monsterous and large feel behind it. The appeal behind it is a MASSIVE creature, most boring people feel the need to just make a lizard with horns that can fly and breath fire, which is really fucking lame for creating a dragon.

Also, bird-folk (Minus the wings for playable ones),

Can we see them in the next elder scrolls game? (After the MMO is made)

First, thats an awesome picture.

Second,

The female armor looks different than the male armor, AND DATS SEXIST! [sub](derp)[/sub][footnote]JK, looks pretty badass. That from an actual game or just concept art that will never see the light of day?[/footnote]

Cthulhu, if it counts.

Hollywood could make an amazing movie based on Call of Cthulhu.
Dunno...Lovecraftian horror, IMHO, only really works when Lovecraft writes it. A big squid dragon man is all very well and good, but people have been ripping of the trappings without teh substances for ages, and it's never done justice to it.

And the other problem, much of what Lovecraft wrote about is liteally impossible to put on a TV screen. Modern monitors can't reproduce all the colours teh human eye can see, let alone colours that should not possibly exist, for example.

I wonder why I haven't seen any games with Egyptian mythological creatures in. Excepting Age of Mythology of course. Anubites are kickass. They should be muscular, but not very big. Wielding all sorts of weapons. Should be able to jump, too.

We all know the Loch Ness monster really exists...
All they would have to do is drain the Loch to find out. Then the mystery would be solved one way or another.

OT: The Hydra, espcially in Disney's Hercules, has always been a favorite of mine.

I believe it should always looks the way it did there.

I prefer the way tengus look in D&D/Pathfinder and in Chrono Trigger as opposed to the original Japanese appearance.

Original Tengu:

D&D/Pathfinder Tengu:

Chrono Trigger Tengu:

If anyone has a mind to say the wing-walking dragons in Skyrim are on four legs remember they are doing just that, walking on their wings.
The 'dragons' of Skyrim are technically wyverns, but Bethesda doesn't know the difference, otherwise you'd be the Wyvernborn.
OT: I'd like to see a frost giant from Norse mythology. The ones in Thor were alright, but not very big. Something called a giant should be huge, not seven to eight feet tall.
More like this:

Less like this:
Tbh I think the West has lost touch with what a western dragon is since a little thing called science came in and said that four legs and two wings would be a hindrance in flight rather than a help.

One thing that really bugs me is how Mermaids/Merfolk are portrayed a lot of the time.

I hate seeing them with the bent tail that has kind of a knee joint in it, or if there's any kind of suggestion of the shape of a leg in it - it looks like someone in a bad Halloween costume.

I like the tail to be more fluid and supple, like an actual fish or sea creature's tail.

I also don't like when they're shown as weird fish people, with gills and green skin and no hair all that.

They seem less like someone trying to come up with a scientifically plausible creature and more like the magic beings of legend when they're an otherwise normal lady with a fish tail instead of legs.

Take a look at a documentary that was made once called Dragons, a Fantasy made real. It's very good and addresses just that as well.

For my monster I think I'll choose the Manticore. I always liked the idea of that one.
Something along the lines of this:

(Sorry, I still haven't figured out how to embed images).

Griffins. I notice that a lot of the time if there are multiple shown, they're all pretty much identical. I'd like griffins to be a little more varied: Different bird wings/head/talons and different big cat bodies/tails. Hell maybe don't even limit it to big cats and just make it any type of "aggressive" beast i.e. bears, canines, maybe big lizards, etc

I like this idea as well. One time, a drew a picture that I thought was pretty cool - it was a griffin made from parts of a bluejay and a tabby house cat. I called it a "Lesser Griffin". I'll see if I can upload it somehow.

so? who cares about 'scientific fact' when the term 'mythological monster' in already in play.

Dragons walk on four legs, have wings, and depending on the species, breath fire, and can wield magic. those are the only 'facts' about dragons that i hold true and that matter, so Skyrim doesn't have any Dragons, they have their gimpy Wyvern cousins

I have seen that! I can't remember much from it since I haven't seen it in a long time but I do remember that the wyvern was explained as being a kind of Mesozoic dragon.

I could not agree more, science should stop trying to rationalize a monster that is doubtful to even exist and let people have their imagination. As Yahtzee once said reality can never compare to the things we can imagine.

Science has no place in a fantasy setting.
Of course Science has shown the inefficiency of dragons, but that's irrelevant when talking about mythical creatures, because they act according to the rules and lore of their particular universe or mythos.

Indeed, I've always subscribed to the view that dragons power their flight via magic and the wings are for stability/steering. Because the fact of the matter is that without a jet engine, nothing that big is ever getting air-born, so aerodynamics is a moot point.

Moving off dragons for a sec, what are peoples opinions on Elves? Classic LoTR immortal pointy eared humans, or small flightless fairies?
