The movie Monsters by Gareth Edwards was previewed on HDNET movies channel yesterday, and surprised the hell outta me. I found District 9 to be just what first contact alien movies needed, and this film took right after it. The two main characters get the bulk of the attention while the "Creatures" take a backseat to the love story.
Monsters had a budget of $15,000, two main characters, and with the props in the end credits to adobe and intel, some pretty awesome graphics software. The aliens look like something out of "The Mist", but end up being portrayed as "nature taking its course".
The point to this being that the "low" and "mid" budget alien/first contact films have come out looking more professional, real and engaging than the massive budget, A list actor titles. Independant directors seem to be able to create a more engaging and real setting than 250 million dollar projects. One of those large budget titles, Skylines, is coming out in November, so I'll have to wait and see if it follows the trend.
