Moral quandary

OK. A handsome and erudite gentleman enters a chain store in search of a new iPod. He knows what he wants and how much he's prepared to pay for it, so he approaches the nearest salesperson and says 'Ho, stout yeoman, I should like to acquire a 8gig iPod Touch if you would be so kind. Oh and one of those rather spiffy rubber skins while you're there.'

Being the kind of store that doesn't simply hand over such highly desirables to random strangers (even ones with such impeccable manners), said assistant takes the merchandise from a locked display cupboard and hands the customer a docket along with an instruction to present it at the counter, where the item will be dispensed. The customer is, however, allowed to carry the iPod skin, it being of negligible value.

After queuing, our erstwhile hero hands over his credit card, adds his rubber skin to the trove, and is presented with a bag containing his purchases. He notes that a second protective skin has somehow been added to the bag, but not the total cost, so he smiles a secretive smile and walks briskly from the store before a hue and cry can be raised.

However, upon inspecting the bag's contents at an eating establishment not too distant, he finds out that he has not only acquired an extra skin, but the 8GB iPod he saw the assistant carry to the desk has somehow metamorphosed into a 32GB model. Which leads him to believe that he has mistakenly been handed someone else's purchase.

Question: What would you do if presented with this situation?

Honestly I would return it to the store and inform them of their error. I know if I didn't do that my conscience wouldn't let me live it down.

Keep it.

Apple can afford it, and the person who was supposed to get the 32GB will get one anyway, because I'm sure the store has more than one on hand.

Everyone goes home happy. Just keep walking.

I would return it, only because of the price difference. If the price difference was, say, $20 or so, I would treasure my secret savings; but since the difference between the two items is considerably more, I would be forced to return it by what little conscience I have left.

However, I would only return it if I noticed it in the mall (I'm assuming this is in a mall), and not in the parking lot or later. I mean, I'm not a saint. Turning around, pshaw.

Nice use of the word 'erudite', by the way. 'tis truly a great word.

Kinda depends on if I like the store. The person who's order got mixed up will probably go back to the store and get the correct thing, as for me, the onlly things I would be hurting is Apple (whom I don't care for especially) and the store. If the store was anything but Fred Meyer's, Target, or Walmart, I would take it back.

Take it back for sure. Shamefully I would probably pretend I hadn't noticed the extra skin to start with in order to avoid embarrassment.

Keep it. The other customer will get his correct purchase, though maybe after some argument, and any store that employs people/process capable of erring in that manner deserves the loss.

I never let the voices in my head hold me back.

I'd like to be able to say I would go back to store.. but I probably wouldn't.
This is kind of the same thing as Kohlberg's scale, with Heinz and the medicine etc.

I'd go back and make sure the person whose purchase I took was taken care of.

Also, partially, for the sake of the clerk, who's ass would be responsible for it and pay, not Apple.

Besides, the gratitude on behalf of all parties would be worth the price difference.

The memory of saving a few bucks depreciates in value as you live, but the value of being above your baser desires only appreciates as time moves on.

For me, anyway.

I'd take it back, after a heated self monologue.
I'm just a damnable idiot nice guy, and the thought of willfully ripping someone off doesn't appeal to me.

Well if you're sure it was someone else's 32 gigabyte and there was no one more 32 gigabyte iPods left then yes. But if not why would you from what it sounds like, they gave you the wrong product and charged you the wrong price. And last time I checked it wasn't the customers job to let them know about their mistake.

Return it. I'd feel a moral obligation to 'get it right'. I always double-check to make sure I got the right thing.

Also, I've worked in the retail service sector, so I have some sympathy for that clerk. I'd feel good knowing that I've helped someone out, especially considering the negligible effort involved.

I'd take it back. Hell, it wouldn't even occur to me to keep it. Not because I'm altruistic or anything, I'm just fucking stupid.
