It use to be stupid people.... died. It happened. It was tragic.... kinda. But that's how things were. They did moronic things and eventually they would either learn or their luck would run out.

But now we have all these little laws to protect them from themselves. Anti-drug laws. Seat belt laws. Put warning signs on things that are clearly poisonous, sharp, electrified, boiling hot to alert the brain dead that they're in danger. The list goes on. These "protect the people from themselves" laws have greatly cut down on their death rate which means they're free to go and have a dozen kids to be raised to be just like themselves.

Everyone knows what happens when you use drugs or don't wear your seat belt. I say, allow them to ignore these consequences without penalty by abolishing such personal safety laws. Then that guy on the road who cut you off and flipped you off while doing it, may have a chance of not reproducing.

I'm just gonna skip the ideology flame war and say it's legal reasons.

Ok, I have to say I agree to some point... but I also disagree.
Some laws are there for a reason, if some yahoo goes and breaks a law and gets killed so what, eh?
But what if he not only gets himself killed but gets others killed who had nothing to do with that he did?
Making sure these idiots don't do anything stupid is to protect us more then anything.

The problem with abolishing many of these laws is that many people will end up killing others because of their stupidity. They are they to protect others just as much as they are there to protect the stupid people.

Thank you, that's exactly what I was thinking to.

The laws are there to stop stupid people who do stupid things from claiming against whoever it is they feel is responsible. If a person dies from doing something stupid, then the family will want compensation.

It seems if people are not told, in clearly written instructions, not to do something, even if to do it means they have no common sense, they will do it anyway. As a result we signpost everything, we slap warnings on everything so that the companies can cover their own asses. "This is dangerous, we aknowledge it's dangerous so we are warning you. If you get hurt, you can't claim because the warning is right here!"

"I'm not saying there should be punishment for stupidity, but why not take the warning labels off everything & let the problem solve itself?"

-George Carlin. May not be exactly right but you get the point.

Back when natural selection meant shit there were less things that you really shouldn't stick your fingers in. Perhaps the healthcare and sanitation systems have cut down on it but, eh, I think I'd be happier without Cholera.

Dumb. You are asumming that all that will happen would be death. What about crippling injuries or health problems, or those left behind? these are a burden to society (and one we should carry) and the law helps reduce that burden.

I was recently elected to next year's committee for a film-making society at my student union. We have to fill in a general risk assessment form as part of the admin stuff before next academic year, and we had a look at the one the outgoing president wrote to get an idea of hat to put. We also have to do seperate forms for different activities like film shoots, just in case there's stuff we haven't covered in the general form. We did a film shoot involving a lift in a theatre recently. On the form we put that a risk would be the lift doors closing on people, because we had to put it in. We wrote on the form that we'd ask for the lift to be switched off during filming. However, since we needed the lift to be active we ended up just sticking a bag in the door to keep it open.

Other things in the general form were things like 'loose wires' from sound and lighting equipment. We had to write down that we would tape wires to the ground during filming. I dread to think what would have happened if the student union knew we were handling 'dangerous' hot coffee during breaks from filming, we'd have been sued more than likely. We're in the UK, for the record. Most of it is just pointless, and common sense anyway, but if you don't write it all down there's the potential to be sued (not that any student could afford the legal fees to sue us, by dint of them being students... :p).
