Jerry "Tycho" Holkins gave a link to a current events segment in his blog accompanying Wednesdays Penny Arcade Comic strip. I know this is several days old, but want to bring it to anyones attention that didn't see it. Here's the link

Did anyone else get a little pissed off by the image they're painting of the internet gaming scene?

Didn't they do the exact same thing with the Nintendo DS with its picture chat thing? Ugh. Crappy news will be crappy news. And we all know that crappy news HATES gaming.

While I do agree with you, this sort of shits been going on for years. It's just the media being the media. They make an industry out of misinterpretation and twisting words. It's not worth getting flustered over.

I did love that PA strip though.

yay, we all love a bit of fear-mongering, "police say this is mild compared to many cases", what police? I call bullshit on unnamed sources. And why does the reporter have to say everything the girl feels? Surely she'd say it herself it she meant it. I feel sorry for her because she probably feels bad for giving them fuel for the FOX game-hate machine.

Give me a break, you'd have to be an idiot to have this happen to you, ever heard of the block button?

I was playing Halo 1 when I was 10. Mum said it was okay because I wasn't shooting humans, I was only shooting monsters and aliens.

While I am by all means opposed to sexual harrasment over online mediums I do believe this is an overreaction. I mean yes online networks can be a haven for predators but video games do not alone hold that distinction, all kinds of forms of online media are capable of it but that doesn't mean that predators swarm over online video games.
I mean think about it, a warm lake would be a good home for say, a crocodile but you don't always find crocs in lakes.
My point is, I feel that this is a bit of an overreaction, odds are the girl found an annoying person on Xbox live and the cure for that is blockage.

I just don't like that it made her sound like a helpless victim. She didn't have to say anything to him, she could've blocked him the first time he said anything.

The problem only hangs around if you let it.

A news station throwing toys out the pram because someone doesn't know how to use the block button?

Incredible.

I laughed quite heartily at the assertion that "most online strangers are adults pretending to be kids"

the truth is, it's probably the opposite.

and with the millions of people gaming on XBL, the number of actual predators probably accounts for less then half of a half of a percent.

those predators, as wrong as they were for soliciting minors (at least if they knew they were minors, they're stupid if they didn't know), probably weren't pretending to be kids to get access to said minors.

And as for "romantic devil", "wanna see my dick?" doesn't make someone a predator.. it makes them a moronic pervert perhaps, but that doesn't make them an evil person. They may have been a 14 year old kid that doesn't know how to properly manage his raging hormones.

Parents should be diligent with their kids, but they really really need to not worry about strangers. A kids uncle is millions of times more likely to molest them then some stranger they meet on XBL.

So the only reason an adult would play a violent game on XBox Live is to pretend to be a kid? What a depressing world view.

I suppose adults should all be too busy getting drunk, shooting guns and voting republican.

c'mon, it's simple: If you don't know someone, don't reply to their messages. It isn't the console's fault, it's personal stupidity.
It's no different to getting texts from random numbers...if you don't know it and don't like it, no one's making you reply.

How's this any different to chatrooms ect, parents be smart about what your children do on the internet, don't blame the internet/games for your lack of parenting.

(To all the bad parents only ;) )

Will... the only reason i play games it to get laid... isnt that sorta why anyone does it?

It isnt... hmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Seriously though, this story was dont a few days ago :) where i made the case for the next xbox to be called the SeXbox... its sexy, and sex sells... make me a CEO damnit... But i'll say this, it is true that predators can use this, but its no different than them trying to stalk kids on the internet through chatrooms or myspace.

Theres nothing wrong with getting the word out there, and honestly, the less kids on there the better.

Oh, look a Fox News report that is biased and unprofessional! Also in the news today: fish can swim and monkeys like bananas.

This, precisely this.
