What are in your opinion the most disturbing monster/creature designs you've seen in visual media? Comics, games, movies, tv shows, manga, anything. Provide images, please.

My honorable mention goes to Berserk, which has buttloads of wacky and freaky creatures
What ultimately keeps it down is the fact that most of the monsters are still fairly standard; just claws, fangs, teeth, tentacles and mouths in places where they shouldn't be.

What truly disturbed me were the monsters of Gantz, which are IMO probably the greatest strength of the manga. Not only were they incredibly creative and disturbing, but also highly unpredictable, which only boosted the creepiness factor. They also shifted shape, often turning into something completely different from what they were. They started out fairly simple, just weird-looking humans, but over time they reached whole new galaxies of fucked-up. Here are just some examples (VERY NSFW):

Your picks?

So I am never reading Berserk or that other manga, cause that is just creepy and terrifying. I really have nothing that can top that, maybe something from HP Lovecraft.

As a side note, I thought Berserk was set in historically accurate Europe, why are there giant boob demons of death?

America's not the only country that doesn't skim over the rough parts of history.

Either that, or Europe isn't fond of Japanese tourism.

So, anyone who read fullmetal alchemist will know where I am coming from, anyone who hasn't... well what are you waiting for, go do it NOW.

To be fair, this is about disturbing design, not characters. There's a whole slew of disturbing characters that don't look so bad.

So no win for you.

I cannot submit my own example, as most of them are indeed against forum policy.

Truth is way more disturbing, though.

As far as I can tell from reading the first 17 volumes, it takes place in a vaguely medieval Europe-like world, but all the countries are fictional. So it's not really supposed to be Europe.

Also, I'm glad that there haven't been any spoilers so far. elt's try to keep it that way, friends.

These goddamn things. Not actually the face, but just the giant featureless design, the horrible noises it makes and how it slowly paces towards you.

Those designs are all pretty terrible in my opinion.
Too overwrought and busy. It's like the RE4/Dead Space monsters.

Wow, SOMEONE'S been examining too much Giger. I'll admit that the naked woman made of naked women made me laugh.

OT:

<spoiler=I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream>http://img.4plebs.org/boards/tg/image/1368/48/1368481039401.png

The thing is pretty creepy, but the design of the creature is really driven home when the victim internal-monologues their physical traits and why they've been cursed with such an awful body. They're unable to injure themselves, move slowly, and are made of a horror-jelly. Essentially, they're made that way specifically to be unable to kill themselves. It was a gross story with a grosser game attached to it.

As someone who browses Tumblr and DA quite a bit, 'I've seen some shit', as they say.
Here is one of my favorites:

There is something very subtle and unassuming about it, which I love in monster design. After learning more about this thing, I discovered they don't even attack you outright. That really bothers me for some reason. Monsters like that, as rare as they are, freak me the hell out. It's like having a giant spider on your ceiling, waiting and watching as you fall asleep.

Thanks for the heads up. Changed most of them into links instead.

I'm thinking pretty much the entirety of Pink Floyd's The Wall.

The whole thing is basically a huge WTF? fest.

Really? Not a single mention of Mara from Shin Megami Tensei yet?

Like...any of Mara's designs?

Of course I never found Mara all that disturbing...not nearly as bad as Arioch.

It's the noise that does it for me, you hear it and instantly panic and start looking in all directions. I think my worst experience was when I had just killed one, the noise continued, so I turned around. The thing was just standing there watching me crap all over my pants. I think that was when I quit the playing the game, haven't touched it since.

I feel the need to mention Double from Skullgirls.
I finally checked that game out recently, and really was not expecting that. Especially not in the form of a playable character.

The monsters from Amnesia first creeped me out because I never was able to stare at them long enough. There's a few others I can't think of at the moment, probably because I've buried their existence out of my life for fear of going insane.

Not to bust out a classic or anything...

The Thing was already mentioned and...ugh...stuff of nightmares. I generally avoid horror, as I'm a colossal baby, but those two have stuck with me for the last couple decades of my life. Much to the chagrin of my unconscious and my desire to sleep soundly.

Hell. You know that thing when you close your eyes in the shower and you think, "when I open my eyes, there'll be a murderer" or something like that? I do that with Giger's alien. No reason or logic behind it at all.

I think the monsters from Cry of Fear do it do me.

My friends and I came up with different names for them though.
For example, the crazy woman was the "Knifey-wifey"
Also, you can't see it in this picture for some reason, but there's a monster that has a chainsaw on each hand and runs REEEALLY fast and waves em around, making it almost impossible to get a headshot. Also he insta-kills you if you get too close.

Actually half these monsters weren't in it. I never saw ANYONE walking except the taller which we callde the "giant" for obvious reasons.
