In many games, characters can be known for uplifting speeches and witty dialogue. From the Shakespearean Legacy of Kain to the clever macho humor of Uncharted or even the friendly batter of teammates in Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress 2, communication and personality are exhibited through speech.
However, many characters have endeared themselves to gamers despite being a mute. The original Doom Marine was able to win the hearts and souls of gamers worldwide through his impetuous slaughter of hellspawn without so much as a bad pun or clever wizecrack.
More recently, the Weighted Companion Cube of Valve's Portal is an inanimate cube that exists as a helpful aid to the main character. Despite that, the Weighted Companion Cube potrays even more emotion than Chell by being a actually competent buddy than many other games.
Are there any particular mutes that rise above the norm in charisma, badassery, and general coolness that should be noted?

Gordon was the first one that came to mind, but I'm going to give my vote to Chell, actually, because, well, she didn't start off with anymore knowledge about her situation and what to do in it than I did. She's a silent protagonist who's defined solely by her actions, not by what anyone else tells us. The mystery about her doesn't make her harder to relate to, though; the fact that it's all about waking up in the test chamber and knowing nothing else from there actually made me connect with her a lot, because I figured she knew about as much about her own history as I did. Whether that's true or not remains to be seen, but I likes mah speculation. =3

I have few of guys in mind, but first place goes to Link, quiet hero rescuing princess from danger, he got my sympathy from first seconds of any Zelda game I played over the years.

Well that's because he was engineered to take it better than a normal person, Fontaine however was just a normal dude so it fucked him up.

I dont know what you mean by "Empathetic", but that word aside it read "Most ... Silent Protaganist"

unfortunately the only answer can be GORDON FREEMAN! (and he pwns Mario like 55% more)

Gordon's gonna walk this one.
He did win the best hero IGN competition rather easily, a random Escapist thread is cake :).
But yeah, Freeman is the best protagonist, let alone silent protagonist.

Revan and the Exile.
Well, they communicate telepathically (even with droids!) but they don't actually talk...
.>
Ok Bad joke.
But I really didn't want to say Freeman. It's just so general.

Well I was sorta sad when the guy from COD4 (the American Marine one) died due to that crash and the nuke and stuff.

But only sorta.

I agree, Link Rapes Freeman, in terms of awesomeness.
