Inspired by me playing Amnesia just before. I entered the Cellar Archives and I was like "Okay, no way back, but this isn't TOO bad...". Entered a side room, turned around, killed in two hits by something I could barely see. And now I'm too scared to continue.

Then I remembered that the water level tends to be the most annoying part of the game in every game that has one, and I decided to ask: What are your least favourite water levels in gaming history?

God, those water parts in Amnesia are so damn annoying. Have only encountered 2 of them so far, but I hated every minute of both of them.

OT: Probably the boat section of HL2. Worst part of the entire game right there.

... all of them. The water levels are equally horrible in all games. Absolutely hate them. Fortunately, there's less and less water levels in games these days. For some reason the one that keeps coming to mind is the part of KOTOR where you walk along the ocean floor on Manaan. It wasn't a bad water level as far as they go, but it's the one I keep remembering when thinking of them.
Play the water level in star fox 64 , it's the only water level i liked .

Water levels hmmmm , iv'e actually forgotten most likey my mind blocking them out due to how bad they are . The only water level i remember is dino crisis 2 because i played it for the first time this year ( yeah i buy retro wanna fight about it?). So i will go with that. Water levels in a 3rd person game is a terrible idea.

Water levels are usually done horribly. In most of the platformers on the ps2 (back when I played platformers) used water in a similar method as to acid or lava. Falling in water usually meant that you would be eaten by sharks almost instantly.

That's...pretty much what happens in Amnesia. And both you and the shark make loud splashing noises when you move so you don't know where the bloody thing is until it rips your health bar out and beats you to death with it! ...And even after making a semi-joke like that, I still can't work up the courage to get back in there.

That water level in Amnesia? Damn, I didn't play the game for a good few days after that I was so petrified...

But to answer the question at hand- imma have to go all nostalgic and vote for the first river level from the very first Crash Bandicoot. Have you tried to get EVERY crate in that level? It's almost an art form...

Keeping with the trend of Naughty Dog, it's not really a "hated water level" as such, but I always hated the big fish in the Jak & Daxter series. Everytime I was eaten by that giant fish for swimming toward the horizon, I died a little inside...

That one level in the Silent Hunter series where you're in water... because you're a submarine.

Seriously though, I've never understood people's beef with water mario levels. I always loved them as a change of pace, and being able to go up as high as you want for once was a nice gameplay mechanic. In SM64 they were some of the most serene and peaceful stages in the game, and the fact that you could resore all your health just by getting to the surface? Munchbiscuity good.

What? No Water Temple mentioned? I am disappoint.
The water temple was actually fun for me.

The one I can not stand is the water level towards the end of the original Sonic. Especially when the water starts rising and you get into that uphill battle to not drown...

EDIT:

Surely the classic Labyrinth Zone form Sonic 1 deserves an honourable mention?

Well even if it's not that hard or anything.... I really dislike the boring as hell underwater labyrinth in MGS2. Especially since you have to do it again with a completely useless person clinging to your back the whole way.

The water part of Amnesia is AWESOME. Damn I've never been more adrenalin pumped and in the zone ever. (At my computer that is)

I'm going with the Little Mermaid world in the first Kingdom Hearts, particularly the fight with Ursula. Fucking horrible camera angles made that fight a fucking pain in the ass. I know there are much much worse water levels but most of them have already been listed.

Torvus Bog and Dark Torvus from Metroid Prime 2.
Cool music, great level design but, still the entire place just DRAGS...oh, and Adult Bloggs are fucking obnoxious to kill.
