The Godfather for me. It's considered legendary by most people but the film is like 3 hours long and I was bored of it about half way through.

The answer is 2012. But instead of ME explaining, I have a pinch-hitter for me. Take it away, Dara O'Briain!

Off the top of my head:

Enemy at the Gates

1. Joseph Fiennes' character - no political officer was ever that idealistic.
2. Ed Harris' character - no German officer of his seniority would ever have been a specialist sniper
3. Shitty graphics
4. Rachel Weisz's character - do I really have to explain?! this is a war film not a damned romantic drama, get the fuck on with the killing already

Pearl Harbour... not sure if this is overrated or anything, but hey

1. The entire fucking film & its continued existence.

Idiocracy, mainly because I see so many people act like it's an intelligent eye opening film. It's not.

There are so many. A lot of them, like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, The Godfather, are because of excessive hype. No movie is ever perfect, so when people have told you something is the greatest movie evar, you notice the flaws a lot more easily.

So I shall endeavour to list only recent movies.

Scott Pilgrim vs the World: Overrated comic book turned into an overrated movie liked only because the primary audience are nerds who, to paraphrase the bard, 'would defend angry wasps if they nested exclusively inside [property the nerd likes]

Harry Potter after Number 3: Daniel Radcliffe forgot what emotion was, Ms Watson's eyebrows started doing most of the acting for her, the side character got shunted aside and most of the plot critical information from the books got dropped in favour of being artsy or adding execrable 'humour.'

Can bad rating be considered overrated? Because for example Batman and Robin is not 'one of the worst movies ever made' as some would claim. It's just boring, not truly bad.

Avatar. Ok, it's pretty. That, to me, is not sufficient validation for a film. And the allegory is far too heavy-handed to be taken seriously, so any merit it might get for its "message" is lost because it's delivered so obnoxiously.

Um, you know Ed Harris' character was an actual historical figure, right?

Wow. I genuinely feel sorry for you. No, we don't think Blade Runner and The Godfather are good movies because of hype. If you don't like them, fair enough, but it's not because they're bad movies.

I'm going to get a lot of flame for this but the Dark Knight. As a Batman fan, I didn't the portrayal of the Batman/Bruce Wayne. They get the small stuff right like Lucius Fox, James Gordon, Alfred and Harvey Dent (although tacking him onto the movie was an overload) and Heath Ledger was an awesome Joker(seriously, every actor that plays the Joker suits the style) but the movie was too all over the place, Batman wanted a wife (the hell?) And that voice. The fight scenes were boring and came off as slow and the movie was too damn long. It's a decent movie but the main character has been watered down and rather than BE Batman/Bruce Wayne, we have a guy pretending to be Batman as opposed to actually being Batman.
Let the flame war begin!

I love all three of those films, they're among my favourite movies ever. My point was that I say them without having been told anything them, so I came to them fresh and appreciated them for the classics of cinema that I truly believe they are. I still think they can be overrated though, because when people throw out phrases like 'best film ever' it conjures up an image of some mythical film with no flaws. I had to watch 2001 and Blade Runner again for my sci-fi class this last year, and what was fascinating was that everyone in the class who hadn't already seen them said they were really disappointed because they had believed the film they were going to see was better than the film they did see.

Hype can ruin any truly great piece of art, because while everyone's telling you 'it's great' you'll be imagining all sorts of cool things, but then you see it and it can never live up to everything it could have been. That's what makes films overrated, not that they're necessarily bad, but that over the years people have rated them too highly.

I thought you were going to call me out on Rachel Weisz's character (Tania Chernova... I think).

As for 'Erwin Koenig', there is still a lot of controversy regarding his existence (or perhaps a certain Heinz Thorvald) and while he is named in Zaitsev's memoires, the official regimental Russian logs (which were very faithful, especially considering the circumstances of Stalingrad) never detail the duel those two had.

(addendum by Martin Pegler, Curator of Weapons, The Royal Armouries, Leeds, UK in a communique with his opposite numbers in Russia)

Blade Runner. The only thing I found particularly exceptional was the cinematogrophy. Otherwise the characters were unsympathetic and uninteresting, the acting was decidedly average and the story really had no profundity or anything that made it seem more than mediocre. I really don't know what it is that people see in this film. Although I will admit the 'tears in rain' scene is rather excellent, the problem is I don't give a shit about the psychotic bastard who said those words.

Pulp Fiction- an exercise in aesthetics over any semblance of actually giving a shit about any of the characters. It's all flash and no bang. That said, I still enjoyed it immensely.

The Godfather- long, slow, dreary, boring and, while full of great performances, simply not all that brilliant. The odd flashes of brilliance don't make the rest of it worthwhile, for me at least.

2001: A Space Odyssey- amazing to look at, amazing effects, brilliant soundtrack, amazing in so many ways except one- the plot, or lack thereof. I suppose its the same sort of thing as Pulp Fiction, an amazing exercise in creating something stunning and innovative but actually fairly empty underneath it all.

Leon, The Professional- A decent action thriller, but why does it have like 8.6/10 on IMDb?

Manos Hands of Fate, widely regarded as the worst horror file ever made. Too good a rating for it.

*sigh*
I think 2001 is amazing, although it's also really boring.

Same goes for Tarkovsky films, they're all masterpieces but so incredibly slow. But that's part of it, I guess. I can't imagine a fast-paced 2001: A Space Odyssey or Stalker.

Star Wars. I understand that it popularized the summer blockbuster and gave new life to science fiction but it's a great movie, not one of the best things ever made. cliche characters and situation, awkward acting, and pretty bad Deus Ex Machina throughout if anything, I considered Empire Strikes Back to be far superior and Return of the Jedi to be a complete mess that foreshadows the flaws in the prequels.
although I will give it credit for mixing together the western, sci-fi, samurai, and fantasy genre in such a subtle way.
