There's a ton of cool martial arts out there, ninjas sneak and shit and Muay Thai is freakin' brutal, but what style is the most practical one in a real-life situation?

Imagine walking home at night and you stop to make a withdrawal from the ATM to save time for tomorrow's plans, and suddenly someone sneaks up behind you with a knife and orders you to give him all of your money.

Or imagine being out with some friends having a few beers, and you bump into a really huge guy and he won't let you go until you get down on your knees and beg for forgiveness, but you're too proud and he's about to hit you with his CRT-screen sized fist.

What kind of martial art would get you out of the situation, or any situation for that matter, in your opinion?

I would probably go for Krav Maga, it's designed for kicking serious ass when assaulted.

Probably something like Judo would be the best for the sort of situations you described..Any punches thrown can quickly be turned into a throw and putting them on the ground. +1 already for you. Then just go MMA style and try and snap their arm or something lol

Hmmm...not sure about the most practical, but I think the Keysi Fighting Method was designed for just this sort of thing.

Definitely Krav Maga, seeing as it is purposefully designed for real life situations.

A lot of other martials arts have developed into "sport" forms over the years or a lot of focus on style, which doesn't always translate well into the real world.

It inevitably depends on how you master your art. All beginners will have their ass handed to them on a silver plate in a fight if they don't know how to fight.

You choose an art, and you study it, wether it is karate, kung fu, jodu. Simply don't choose a martial art based on the manipulation of weapons, such as kobudo.

My sensei is a 3rd dan Shorin Ryu, and it's amazing: he is rather small, but his agility, speed and technique is amazing. He blocks everything and manages to place a perfect punch before you realizes he blocked you in the first place.

In all seriousness, running. I really don't think there is any single martial art that will help you in every situation and your odds start to crumble as weapons and superior numbers get involved. But if you can seriously book it, running increases your odds of survival the further you get from someone. Hell even against superior numbers and weapons you have a better chance by just running.
Take a page out of Doctor Who, hes survived 900 something years. How? Running.

Hokuto Shinken!

Nothing can beat it.
The only way to go, finding an instructor though...

I cross train, Kickboxing and BJJ. If you are only doing one night a week its no where near enough unless you are happy with it just being a hobby. Also your video is of a demo, you can do alsorts of stuff that will never work in a fight in a demo as its pre arranged. Ill give you an example:

Looks fantastic but not practical at all. If you want to get lethal fast you can't go wrong taking up boxing.

Krav Maga is a solid bed. Practically though, you can't go past Sayoc Kali knife fighting. Aside from your manslaughter conviction, that is.

Whatever you end up choosing, though, I only have one piece of advice -- don't go looking for trouble. Even coming out on top in a physical confrontation can backfire on you a hundred ways.

So that's what Krav Maga looks like? Jesus, maybe I am on the right track.

Anyway, that seems to be the most practical style I've seen.

There's a KFM place near me that does Urban Weaponry classes. I've been tempted for ages.

Krav Maga and other military-minded martial arts that are more grounded in realism and efficiency than philosophy and tradition will always beat the fuck out of those that don't.

Still, if you're taking martial arts classes because you want to use them in real-life situations and you're not in the armed forces or another profession that necessitates the use of violence you're a massive idiot anyway. You're better off choosing one you like and taking some self-defense classes on top of it if you feel unsafe.

My vote gets cast for either Pentjak Silat or Muay Boran. If you don't know what they are, you should look them up. Both interesting, practical and fucking deadly. <3

I'd say those self defence/street fight devirative defence courses are probably the most usefull in real life. The ones that teach go for all the soft spots, gougue out eyes, rip off ears etc.
But most importantly teach you to run the fuck away if the situation permits you to.
