Most Unfair Moments in Gaming

Anyone have any memorably unfair moments in gaming that they'd like to share with the Escapist community? Maybe you finally beat that tricky boss only for your game to crash? Or perhaps you slogged your way through an unforgiving level only to die within spitting distance of a checkpoint? If you have any stories or controller snapping, blind swearing moments of frustration and rage, we'd like to hear them =)

To start the ball rolling, here's one of my own - Myself and 3 friends were playing Left 4 Dead on expert difficulty determined to finally complete a level on it (our 8th attempt). We made it to the finale with only one molotov between us and no pipe bombs. The AI director gave us NOTHING for the final crescendo. So we squared our shoulders, loaded our weapons and prepared for the onslaught. We had made it this far, rescue was only minutes away.

The first casualty was "The Rookie", pinned by a hunter and killed by the first tank. He was the least experienced player in our group, but had saved me many times from the infected. As the tank fell, we shed a tear for him before bracing for the second attack. We held off the waves of screaming infected and dispatched the second tank without further incident, but a few close calls. Finally our salvation arrived, but not soon enough. The infected were everywhere, our bullets seemed useless against the closing wall of zombified flesh and we had nothing to thin the horde. No pipe bombs to draw them away, and our one molotov we had used against the tank. A boomer hit "Sarge" and the infected tore him apart before he could reach the chopper. Cut off from him by the rabid undead, there was nothing I could do but run.

Four of us made it to the roof, but only 2 of us escaped. If only we had a single pipe bomb Sarge might have escaped, if that hunter had attacked someone else then the Rookie might still be alive.

We played for 2 hours and they never got the satisfaction of beating the level. They were seriously unhappy about that.

Why? Why?! Curse you AI Director!

The 5th Dimension/Cerberus boss in Titan Quest: Immortal Throne.

There is a checkpoint at the beginning of the area, a VERY LONG trek across the area, and a fight with the HARDEST BOSS IN THE GAME, and that includes the final boss (who I beat on the first try). This means that if you die fighting the Cerberus (and you will, cheap one hit kill floor), you respawn FIVE MINUTES BEFORE WHEN YOU STARTED.

The only thing making the boss beatable is the fact that he doesn't regenerate health, and I could take off about %3 of his health each time.

When I was eight, I had just beaten DethI in Link's Awakening. I didn't have any batteries in my gameboy and was using a wall adapter. I was really happy when I finally beat him that I raised my arms above my head and shouted for joy. Then I noticed that the adapter cord was hooked on my pants and I had torn it out so I had to do it again. Not so much unfair as uncoordinated, but, whatever.

More recently, though, it's been watching my bullets fly ghostlike through everyone I fire them at in CoD4. It's really annoying.

Pit of a 100 trials in Paper Mario 2.

It's been a whole since I played that, but as I recall the last 10 levels are filled with giant purple bomb-ombs. These guys charge up to create ridiculously powerful attacks. However, they also spawn with Amazing Dazees with can put you to sleep if you screw up, allowing the big stupid bomb-ombs to charge up their ridiculous attack.

So as you probably guessed, I lost because the stupid Dazee put me to sleep. All that work thrown away when I was within reach of my goal.

I think that qualifies as unfair, I remember how friggin hard that boss was =P

As for the CoD thing, I heard there's been a huge outbreak of hacking recently - maybe thats why they just won't die when you shoot them?

Just off the top of my head, LoZ: Ocarina of Time not letting me use anything but the Master Sword to damage Ganon during the (second?) phase of the fight. I earned that Biggoron Sword! I want to USE IT!

In Cod4 getting spawn raped by highly coordinated teams, while my own fails to even communicate. It's honestly the saddest thing I've ever seen in multi-player.

Similiar thing happened to me with my 360. Spent over $250 pre-ordering everygame I wanted from the Christmas releases. I get home and my 360 red rings out of nowhere. I wasn't angry. I just looked at it, and went to bed several hours early. I was completely disappointed. I was partially crushed. My dad saw that. I've had to send 360's to repair a couple times. The last one had taken almost 2 months. My dad took me to Walmart the next day and we got an Arcade Edition. I figure it was a good cost since it was also came with a controller, game, and memory card. Now I have a spare at least!

Getting spawn camped in any game makes me hurt myself, I once skinned my knuckle against my mouse.

Every time I play COD4 I seem to end up on the losing team, even though I get positive ratios.

This happens even in MTD.

The matchmaking seems a littel unfair, it'll put all the gold stars together on one team more often than not.

That is the reason I still haven't bought a 360... I fear my terrible luck with consoles (one of them ended up in a water cistern... don't ask) will reach biblical proportions if I get an XBOX

Blizzard's policy on raid difficulty scaling in World of Warcraft:

Article 1- "If it's not finished, make it near impossible to beat. They'll never actually try to kill a boss that is clearly impossible!"

Article 2- "Nerf everything!...But only after the ultra hardcore guilds clear it and the casual guilds start complaining that it's too hard."

Star Fox 64. I'd gotten all the way through to Andross, the real version
He's a big brain with flying eyes instead of a robot
And my little sister tripped on the N64 power cord. DX

Finally was about to beat mission + bonus in one of the missions in Guild Wars Prophecies, then someone tricked me with the dang alt-f4 trick..... that sucked so bad. But now I get other people with it.

Going back to Link's Awakening... how bout beating the 7th and 8th dungeons, AND dethl, then realizing you never saved the game? So much for repeating the boss fight...

Everquest.

Kerafrym. The Sleeper.

An entire server was about to kill him to make gaming history. The Game Masters freaked out because he was supposed to be near impossible to kill. They despawned him then respawned him with full health because there were no drops on him.

The server then killed him again. Rage and fire commenced towards Verant on that very day.
