Well, I just finished reading Vertical Run by Joseph R. Garber, and on page 149, Bernie Levy, a fairly important character proceeds to smash open a window 1000 feet up and step backwards out of it, the reason unknown until near the end of the book, which I won't spoil because some people may want to read it.

Anyway, after something massive happens, he turns to the main character, says something and steps out. The lines go, with the removal of a bit of boring text:
"It takes an object 6 seconds to fall 1000 feet. David reached the window with enough time to see Bernie die. In Vietnam, he had observed enough wet death. (A bit of boring text)Nonetheless, the sight of Bernie's end, even from a height, was bad. Very bad.

Poor pudgy Bernie exploded.

Orphaned limbs, pink strings of flesh, slick grey organs burst onto the street. Blood, quite black under the harsh glare of street lights, splashed streamers. (A fair bit more boring text) A woman washed in gore collapsed. Her male companion knelt retching where she lay. People farther away screamed. A lump of Bernie Levy the size of a soccer ball tumbled out into the Park Avenue intersection, there to cause brakes to shriek and fenders to crumple. A dog pulled free of its master's slackly held leash and trotted gingerly to the entrancing odor of fresh offal."

Now, if you think that isn't too violent, picture that scene in your mind.
I ask this question to you all: What is the most violent moment in a book you have read or heard?

Ice Station by Matthew Rielly

A spike grenade going off, shooting spikes eveywhere.

Scarecrow by Matthew Rielly

Gas Expanding bullets, they make everybody explode when hit.

Also someone being executed with a guilitene.

Something by Raymond E Fiest... I forgot which book. And magician.

Not really to violent, but crashing the moon into a planet to kill everything there, plus the dreadlord leaving it is fair violent.

Magiican - Making it rain ice on a desert people, making it rain fire and energy at the same time too.

Theres a few.

That's not really violent; just graphic and gross. The actual act was over pretty quickly, and it didn't have the intent necessary to be violence. It was self inflicted.

Personally, I'd have to go with "Shadowstorm"

Cale completely shreds Kesson Rel against his own barrier of thousands of tiny blades...slowly, with screams.

"Midnight's Mask"

Erevis drives his thumbs through the eye sockets of Dolgan, and then rips his skull off before burning the entire body in fire. Then turns on his friend.

or "Bloodwalk"

Quinsareth vs Gnolls was a little excessive.

Try a Matthew Rielly book, particularly ice station. Killer whales get shot in the head in that book.

Gaunt's Ghosts or Eisenhorn. Both are rather graphic on the violence.

You forgot, in Ice Station and Scarecrow respectively:

Snake getting the mining drill through the face

The Draybak guy getting microwaved, Brandeis getting sharked, Delacroix getting splattered thanks to the metal door, and Killian dropping a fair distance and making a nice bloody mess on some rocks

Think one of most violent books ive read was American Psycho... It certainly aint for kids nor weak people as the tortutre and murder scenes are quite bizzare/wicked.

Weeeeelllll, we're doing rather weak stuff in Year 10 in terms of violence (Romeo & Juliet, To Kill a Mockingbird), and this is in Australia, so I doubt we'll do anything violent.

The Iliad- I dont have a copy to hand, but amoung the many and varied deaths in it, theres a bit where Achilles goes on a bit of a mental even by his standards, and it involves people getting mangled under his chariot, while some other poor bugger gets his head cleaved, causing his eyes to pop out and roll in the dust. Badass.

Mai-chan's Daily Life.

The whole thing is beyond words...

It's a manga by the way, so you actually SEE the images.

That book certainly is... special.

Still, a very good read.

Honestly, "The Illiad". Homer really wasn't shy about graphically describing vicious battle scenes where people are getting hacked to pieces. It may lack some of the brutal graphic nature of some books mentioned but it just keeps going for several hundred pages of pure violence. It makes me laugh when a school board will ban other books for violence but "classics" are free to do as they please.

The last part of "Guts" by Chuck Palahniuk. It's a short story, part of the novel "Haunted":

I did warn you. People fainted at book readings of this story. Seriously, think twice before clicking the link.

Scroll down about half-way for the part I'm referring to (the narrator is in a pool). Definitely not appropriate for under-18s. You have been warned.

Also, "Child of God" by Cormac McCarthy is one messed-up read.

Agreed. Some of the stuff in 'Night' is just horrific, all the more so because of the lack of drama in presenting it (IIRC).

It's not violent, but the description of what sends Eric insane (I won't spoil it) is particularly graphic and horrifying. It needs to be though, to emphasize it.
Who's Eric?
