This is different to my very old thread some way back where I asked about the most unneccecary (a word I can't ever seem to spell correctly) sequel for any movie. The difference this time is a sequel to a respected movie franchise that you actually liked that simply failed and ruined your respect for said franchise and helped make sure you wouldn'r be seeing any more movies in that series. An example of this would go to Batman and Robin or Superman 4 as movie titles that just killed thier own franchise and ruined the movie series for me personally forever.
However rather than chose them I've decided to go with another movie that in my eyes killed a movie franchise I had... sort of liked. Species 3, now as stupid a premise Species was at least the first two were enjoyable. The third one just shat on itself and became unwatchable. So yeah, my pick anyway.

What's yours?

(this post would have been longer but I am in a hurry.)

I think Star Wars episode 3 ruined it and made way for more kiddies stories (Clone Wars etc.)
I couldn't think of any other, but the new trilogy ( eps 1,2 and 3) seemed to kick out the atmosphere of the original trilogy to replace it with special effects and action. (ep 1 is part way between as I see it. some atmosphere but still a barren planet of special effects.)

Spider-Man 3 and X-Men 3, were huge departures from their predecessors and turned people off greatly.

The new Wolverine movie might've driven the final nail in the coffin for the movies.

This one's going to come back a lot, but The Phantom Menace demonstrated pretty clearly that the Star Wars magic died in the eighties. Predictably enough, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith were overall shitty movies with a few bright spots. Comparing the trilogy to the prequel trilogy, it's difficult to believe that they're both supposed to be different parts of the same story.

The Matrix Revolutions completely killed the franchise for me. Reloaded was a shitty movie, but after Revolutions I have no interest in seeing any new Matrix material.

Alien 3 was so bad that I still haven't seen Alien Resurrection, despite the fact that the first two movies in the series are my favorite horror and one of my favorite action movies, and despite the fact that it was directed by one of my favorite directors.

Now, here's something that has always puzzled me.
Personally, I think that - while not up to the calibre of its predecessors - Alien 3 wasn't a bad film.
In fact, I found it moderately enjoyable, and focused a lot more on character than in the previous ones.
I'd say that Alien: Ressurection is the (comparatively) worst film in the series, and even then, it's still fun and action-packed.

That franchise deserved a sequel that was up to its caliber, not a completely forgettable jump-out-of-the-dark-and-say-"boo" movie. It starts by kicking us in the face by killing everyone we have any attachment to aside from Ripley, and continues by giving us a by-the-book formula horror story completely devoid of any real suspense or fright.

If it weren't part of the Aliens franchise, I wouldn't hate it, because I would have forgotten about it the instant it ended. It was just another stupid shitty formula horror movie in a sea of stupid shitty formula horror movies, except that it was branded by a franchise that once represented the best.

Matrix has got to be the worst, they took the good ideas of the first one, and two to a lesser extent but it was pretty mediocre, and threw them out completely so that most of the action took place OUT of the matrix. Seriously, not the best idea for a new 'matrix' film.

talking of sequels... where the hell is monsters inc 2?

X-3 ruined the original two movies for me so much I can't even watch them anymore. And I loved the first two! I refused to see the new Wolverine movie because of what they did to Deadpool. They already ruined one childhood classic, I wasn't about to submit to the ruining of another.

And the Godfather 3, which should get some kind of award for how bad it was and how much it destroyed the characters and morality of the first two films. It was just an excuse for Coppola's daughter to get some screen time.

Indiana Jones 4.

They should have just left it alone. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with George Lucas? Why can't he just leave well enough alone? Indiana Jones should be glorious; Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was just horrible.

I'd also say Highlander 2, but, of course, Highlander 2 never happened.

Don't make me hurt you.

I used to hate Alien 3 and Resurection as well, but going back recently and rewatching them has warmed me up quite a bit to them. Oh sure, they're not on par with Aliens, but what movie ever could be? It's like saying that sex with a condom isn't as good as sex without, sure it's not, but that doesn't mean that it's bad by any stretch of the imagination.

Regardless, I'm going to give my franchise killer award to Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows. Seriously, what the McHell was up with that thing? Personally speaking, I really enjoyed The Blair Witch Project, oh sure, the plot was nothing to write home about, but it knew what it was, and it did its best to be what it was. But then Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows came along, and even though it doesn't have Dane Cook in it, I always think of it as if it did. That's how absolutely putrid it is.

I'm making a prediction here:

Terminator: Salvation

Given the nightmare fuel premise of the first two films and their ultra violent execution, their reputation let the Terminator name largely survive 3 intact.
Unforunately, any chance to repair the damage done by that P.O.S of a film have been ruined, ruined by a phrase that should strike the fear into all movie goers.

PG-13

Seriously, how in the name of all Skynet do you make a PG-13 TERMINATOR MOVIE?

Anyway.

Predator 2, killed the Predator franchise stone dead, now he needs the Alien's help to even get in a film.

Resurrection's a definite improvement, not Aliens level, but not bad.

There was only a few months in it though (you are on about the AVP comics right?), Predator 2 pretty much killed the franchise's ability to sell by itself.

Aww come on, you mean you didn't like the underwater section? If nothing else you get to watch Winnona Ryder almost drown, so it can't be that bad.

The simpsons movie ruined the show for me. I don't know how or why since I liked the movie, but after watching it I just can't watch the show anymore.
The new rocky came close to ruining the other movies for me as well but thankfully it didn't.

AvP was around before Predator 2 had finished filming, and is one of the best genre cross-overs that was ever imagined. The AvP movies on the other had have been a suck-fest of monumental proportions, the first being an amalgam of a few novels, the 2nd trying too hard to appease fanboys.

And Resurrection should've been abandoned. Only thing that gets me through that abortion is Ron Perlman's performance.
I liked him in that movie, though still I thought Weaver once again shone through with her performance as the half alien Ripley. That said Resurrection was easily the weakest of the series.
Shame too I think the alien series might be my favourite series of all time, movies anyway.
