Now I'm certainly no novice at the subtle art of sitting on my ass and watching movies. Consequently, I need some new movies to watch. There's really no genre that I won't watch (except for romantic comedies. With some notable exceptions.) Any suggestions?

EDIT: I guess I'm looking more for the "hidden gem" type films rather than very popular ones. I've seen most of the blockbusters of the last decade, as well as the well-known cult hits like Fight Club, Donnie Darko, and Evil Dead.

Uhm...yeah, it's going to be hard to recommend anything without knowing what you might have watched and what you might not like.

That said, assuming you are not all too familiar with North-European Stuff, give "Rare Exports" a shot. Its a dark, yet somewhat lighthearted Movie about Santa Claus being real and a murderous Lovecraftian Horror.
It's like a Doctor Who Episode gone wrong, yet very fun.

The Fourth Floor and Dark City. Two pretty cool scifi movies that are sort of overshadowed by the popularity of The Matrix.

Also, The Game. You just lost it, but there's an ok movie by that name. If you like conspiracy movies, you should check it out.

Hah! I'm native to the country where that movie was made (the country being Finland). I haven't seen it either yet, I'm surprised to hear a non-Finn recommend it.

If you like good horror look up the film "[rec]" its a really tense, claustrophobic, Spanish hand held camera zombie film. It may not sound great but it really, really is

I know they don't mean that much, but the reviews back me up

If you liked Donnie Darko and Fight Club, then you'll probably like American Psycho, Taxi Driver, and A Clockwork Orange.

I probably wouldn't recommend it if you've seen Quarantine. Rec is essentially the same movie, but a little better, and in Spanish. I'd recommend Primer, Lock, -Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels-, and Snatch.

how's your anime experience?

Wind of Amnesia
Porco Rosso

There's two for starters that are almost guaranteed not to come up in the normal rotation of things, but are plenty enjoyable.

And depending just how advanced you are I'll toss in a couple others from the same studio as PR and two from elsewhere that may very occasionally get airplay, but not noticably.

Princess Mononoke
Laputa
(bypassing Spirited Away completely)
Various Lupin IIIs
Cowboy Bebop

:p

the field of good live action movies is far too vast for me to start making suggestions along the lines you want without having any clear idea of actual preferences, what you've already seen etc. hit netflix and go hog wild.

Many options, what about silent films, they are not to be underestimated
- metropolis
- nosferatu
- faust
- king kong
- moderen times
- city lights
- etc

some real classics:

sergio leone
- fistfull of dollars
- for a few dollars more
- the good, the bad and the ugly
(really good trilogy)

akira kurosawa
- seven samurai
- rashomon
- ran
- yojimbo
- the hidden fortress (this story was an inspiration to star wars)

some of my personal favorites

- the swimmer (looks like a weird movie but is very metaphorical)
- abre les ojos
- oldboy
- the road
- cidade de deus
- alien (the first and second)
- battleground
- 28 days later
- night of the living dead
- a scanner darkly

the more recent ones

- black swan
- inception

You can always check the imdb top 250

For dreamy/surreal stuff like Donnie Darko:

Being John Malkovitch
The Science of Sleep
I Heart Huckabees
Memento
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
A Scanner Darkly
Requiem for a dream
Mulholland Dr.
Stranger than fiction

For starters. Though it's hard to make suggestions when you haven't been specific about what kind of movie you want/what you've already seen.

Taken (with Liam Neeson because he is great)
Two Hands (Heath Ledger's other good movie)
Nightwatch (and it's sequel, read the books too)
Scarface
Hot Shots (Charlie Sheen in a good parody, also it's sequel)
Anything made by Mel Brooks
Snatch
American History X
Phantom (not Uber acting but I just find it fun)
Mortal Kombat movies (same as phantom)
Shoot Em' Up
Machete is great
Nine (released in 2009)
First Blood (in all it's and it's sequels greatness)
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (it rocks hard)
Dr. Strangelove, another great one
Monty Pythons
Blade and it's sequels (but most importantly the first)
Dirty Harry
Outlaw Josey Wales
Unforgiven
Equilibrium was alright
Punisher: War Zone was under appreciated because it was in no way a thinking movie, you just had to enjoy it.
Ip Man is a great martial arts movie.
Watch some Bruce Lee while you are at it.
Undisputed was good (though I only got to see 3)
Lord of the Flies was a good one
Taking Woodstock was pretty good too.

Damn, so many movies I like.

As leader of all the illegal activities in Casablanca, I'm an influential and respected man.

You should see Casablanca it is a cracking script even if the camera is a bit static for modern tastes. See also, The Third Man and Night of the Hunter. John Carpenter's Kurt Russell films are good fun films (The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, and Escape from New York).

Haven't seen it, but I haven't heard good things.

Of course its essentially the same movie, Quarantine's a remake or Rec. While I haven't seen Quarantine, I have, like I said above, heard that its inferior to REC. although I'd imagine that, seeing as its a shot for shot remake, if you've seen one there's not much need to see the other.

but screw all that and watch REC anyway

The Lost Boys It's an 80's horror/comedy about vampires, starring Corey Haim/Feldman, and is absolutely fantastic.

Why not try The Man Who Fell to Earth? It's a mid-seventies science fiction adaption. A fantastic film, very loose and lucid and an ultimately emotional tale. It stars David Bowie too, right before his Berlin era, so, it's a win-win situation.

Russian Ark (Русский Ковчег), excellent one-shot film in first person, from the perspective of a ghost floating through various rooms of the Winter Palace in Saint Peterburg, one fo the beautiful and historic buildings in the world.

I'm incredibly tired so I can't remember anything else, unfortunately, but I may pop back in later.

You need to be a little more specific. At least give us a genre...

Anyway, out of the blue, I would say: El Secreto de sus Ojos (The Secret of Their Eyes)... Oscar winner of 2009's best foreign movie.
