So I recently re-watched Dune for the ... well god knows what time it is now and I just got hit with a small little fascination of sorts comparing the great moves of 30 years or so past to the ones now.

Like I noticed the pacing of the two is WAY off. A three hour movie like Dune feels just as long as an hour and a half movie today, though i think this is mostly due to the filmmakers then managing to hold the camera still for two god-damned se.... sorry tangent. I mean just watch the last 30 mins. of Space Odyssey (and I know i gonna catch flack for this but i found it to be boring and drawn out as shit) and then take the ending of say Crank ..... ok bad example but the point still stands.

Or like how the actors had to, ya know, ACT instead of running around a bunch of CG or and explosions for half an hour seeing as though making special effects meant actually MAKING special effects.

Or if you ever noticed how well the choreography of todays blockbusters far outshines the old ones. Just compare the new Ninja Assassin to any of the older stuff and you'll spot the difference fairly quickly.

Idk it may seem a bit pointless but it is fairly interesting. On that thought I wonder how Dune would have turned out with todays tech.

There are shitty movies then and shitty movies now. I forget what it was called, but there was a movie that Moviebob talked about not long ago which was a horror movie. It was sold as a heart-pumping thriller, and tried to be a straight-faced horror film, but it was about rabbits. Seriously--giant bunny rabbits made huge from scientific experiments gone wrong. They didn't even try to dress them up or make them look extra scary or anything. They just recorded footage of a bunch of bunnies running around little town models and spliced together scenes that tried to make it look like people were getting eaten alive by them. Absolutely hysterical. And I doubt the acting was on-par either. If the director could think bunnies are good for a horror film, I doubt he was too keen on what sort of acting makes good horror, either.

The only difference between the shitty movies of today and the shitty movies of yesterday, as you said, is the special effects. Today's shitty movies are a little more crisp than yesterday's.

Also, the only reason it seems like there were more good movies in the past is because we've had time to forget all the bad ones (unless, of course, you're a film buff and know about every film ever made).

Why stop at thirty years ago? I'd recommend checking out the German silent classics.
There have always been terrible films, it just so happens that each era has a certain flavour to it. And there will always be poor films, multimedia marketing just happens to make the presence of terrible films much more pronounced.
Just block it out.
