The MPAA has publicly stated that politicians who don't honor the wishes of their campaign supporters will face sever consequences. In other words. Hollywood is trying to buy legislation.

"Those who count on quote 'Hollywood' for support need to understand that this industry is watching very carefully who's going to stand up for them when their job is at stake. Don't ask me to write a check for you when you think your job is at risk and then don't pay any attention to me when my job is at stake," Dodd said on Fox News on Thursday.

If I'm not mistaken, aren't there laws in place to prevent this sort of thing? Or does the MPAA just have enough money and lawyers that nobody is going to even try to touch them?

This whole thing just sickens me. Nobody should be able to get away with this kind of thing, no matter how much money they have.

Pretty sure it's legal. All they're really saying is "I won't fund your campaign if you don't support my issue", which is fair enough in a way. Can't expect someone to fund a campaign if they disagree with the person's politics. But it's pretty crass to simply go out yelling it in public or to make a threat of it. And considering the immense opposition to things like SOPA it starts to sound really selfish in this case since he wants the politican to ignore the public and go with him instead because of his money.
Of course, in the end, he only has one vote.

All I hear "WAH WAH We didn't get our way for once"

Seriously the MPAA are being little careless with their words. Saying you should get decisions because you gave the most money to the decision makers sounds an awful lot like bribery. I wish corporations would get it into their heads donating to political campaigns means norhing unless the politician wins the election. Any politician with half brain knows that votes > money. Siding with the votersis the only way to get re-elected, you can have all the money donations in the world, it won't happen if the majority of people are agaisnt it.

It shocks me how open and seemingly normal blatant corruption like this is over there. It's almost like this sort of thing isn't even considered to be corruption any more, just 'campaign sponsoring.'

This will make him loose his place, and then Hollywood will move onto another individual.

And I agree so much with this. We really need to fix Campaign Finances and we need to remove Lobby ism in this country really badly. We need to start voting in people who are against Lobbyists and will want to fix Campaign Finances.

Who feels like roasting marshmallows on an open flame?

That flame being the MPAA headquarters of course.

According to the Supreme Court, yes.

Unfortunately.

That's how it works. That's the whole meaning of lobbying. The only unusual thing is the fact that he is being open about it.

well, that wasn't a very intelligent thing for Dodd to say. I think even Congressmen at least want to maintain appearances when it comes to taking campaign money. Clearing showing that it's a bribe isn't going to make it politically easier for our representatives to rally back to SOPA....

Fun fact, Dodd also said in the past, and I quote, "No lobbying, no lobbying".

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2011/03/no-lobbying-says-senator-before-taking-movie-biz-lobby-job.ars

Can we, like, have a revolution? Or something? I'm kind of tired of living under representatives who can legally be corrupted. We don't even need to COMPLETELY overthrow the government, hell I'll be happy with banning lobbying. And this whole revolving-door thing the MPAA and anyone else has with congress.
