I've been thinking about this for a while, but being busy with attending 'boarding school' I haven't been able to make a post about it.
I was reminded earlier today, as I was sitting down getting pretty excited to get to play some Team Fortress 2, since I'm home for a week's vacation. I was going to play the 'new' game mode Mann vs. Machine, when I realised that I was afraid to join a server. I really wanted to play the game, but I couldn't help but feel that I would be judged and harassed for not knowing everything about the game mode and all the tactics forwards and backwards. The pressure built up and I decided to quit the game before I'd even started playing. I'd much prefer to just play the game mode with a some friends and have a great time, but that wasn't much of an option with like, three friends online, being busy playing something else. I have the same problem with Dota 2. I don't play much, but when I do, I very much prefer to just play a round or two with bots. No pressure. No harassment. Tons of fun.
So, I ask you escapists, is this a common problem? Is it an increasing issue? And is Valve's plan to punish trash-talkers and reward nice players going to help? [small]...Derailing like a *****.[/small]
