Ok thats midleading I DO see the apeal of multiplayer...kind of

So I didnt seriously play anything multiplayer untill dead space 2, yes it was very fun for a while, but Its kind of gotton old now

also I just got the first left 4 dead (finally) and the multiplayer is fun I also find it almost just as fun single player, mabye because I can go through the campaigns at my own pace (and I never get to be zoey in multiplayer Im always louis) plus matchmakign seems slow at times, probably because of left 4 dead 2....dammit now Ill have to get that the watered down australian edition

Ive never played COD or Team fortress. Id like play team fortress but I dont have the internet to spare

anyway from my perspective, other than mabye quick cash-in reasons I dont see why multiplayer could ever kill the apeal of single player,

so why do oyu play multiplayer? for the competition, is it more satisfying know you are working/killign real people?

To be honest? I think it's because going against human players will always be infinitely more fun and interesting than going against AI. Even putting aside the fact that AI isn't that good at the moment, and human players can easily be much better... When you're against humans, there's more variety. You'll have good players, bad players, and everything in between.

But with AI? Well from my experience you set the difficulty, maybe, sometimes - and that's it. They always use the same tactics, are always the same skill level, so once you can beat the AI once you can beat it every time, and there's no fun there. But going against humans, anything could happen - you never know how the game is going to turn out.

For me, I think that's the real pull of multiplayer.

I don't see it either. At least not the contextless match set up games, which is how most FPS and RTS games do it. It's fun once, it's fun ten times, then it just gets repetetive. I need some story or some line the game moves through to keep me going.

With multiplayer you can do a little dance, make a little love, get down tonight. And possibly even make a new friend or two if you're not already enjoying your gaming with friends. The majority of my limited multi-playing is just with friends.

The appeal to multiplayer is that AI is usually really stale, and there's never a different strategy, challenge, or style of play, it's always the same with the computer.

But against another human opponent you have no idea what to expect.

That's why I wish Brawl's online didn't suck so bad... I'd love to play against people without having to invite my friends over all the time.

Human players are harder to kill... I take that back. Human players have better tactical skills as they are not AI controlled. But they don't automatically know where you are (unless they're hacking) like computers. You can hide from a human player.

i honestly dont know. people say AI is usually stale well sure they act in pre programmed ways, but so do humans psychologically speaking. I think it comes down to poor design choices in pve style play that make it less dynamic than pvp style play

I think that this is the answer. Playing against the AI will normally yield the same results. AI 1 will come up the hill bank left and get shot in the face by me. I then know that I have about 2 seconds to scope the top of the hill on the right side to get AI 2 etc.

In contrast, the number of times I get totally surprised by a person doing something completely crazy that I just hadn't thought of makes it interesting and exciting. It makes me want to play more to see what other ways people will come up with to kill me/ beat me at golf/ out CIV me. Even better, it makes me want to improve and become more innovative.

It doen't work on everything - for example I like playing at my own pace on Dawn of War 2 and RTS's in general, but for FPS it is the way forward. I have clocked up about 26 hours on CoD BlOps and haven't even looked at the single player.

I can't imagine Dead Space 2's multiplayer is really there for anything more than being able to say they've got multiplayer on the box.

I would try better stuff (Battlefield games, TF2, etc.) if you actually want to get into multiplayer.

Because...it's fun?

It'll be different each time based on skill. AI will act the same.
It's fun to play with friends.
Mulitplayer will be different and can last for ages, unlike singleplayer which only lasts as far as it has been programmed, and how much replay you're going to do.

And playing with other people gets you more satisfaction when your combined team effort succeeds.
This. Human players are unpredictable (sometimes), and have a brain of their own (sometimes). It's always better to be able to shout "HA! I outsmarted you" and get that satisfaction

Also, it's the multitude of challenges. You have many game modes in COD. It's not always just "point and shoot". Some people may treat it as such, but for the most part, it's about actually fulfilling different objectives.

it's more challenging to defeat real people than retarded AI's that only have an advantage because they have twice the health and 10 times as many people. It's also something that you can do at whatever pace and style you like, you don't always have to cater to the objective of beating a level, it can be just about getting kills and staying alive.

Exactly! See, my favourite genre is real-time strategy. Even in the most sophisticated RTS games, the AI won't really ever show much strategy. They build their buildings, build a few units here and there, constantly harassing you. In better RTS games, the AI might start to adapt to the units you use or the placement of your defenses.

But really, you learn so much more when you face off against a real opponent. Losing against a human foe will teach you so much about your strategies, how to improve yourself, and how to counter other strategies. In fact, I probably wouldn't have liked Red Alert 3 if the beta wasn't entirely multiplayer and force me to go against human opponents. I probably would have played it like I played every C&C game before it-- build structures and defenses, never scouting or expanding.

Multiplayer is one of the best ways to add replayability to any game, for most people at least. For some, it's mods and cheats (for SP).

But multiplayer mixes things up and allows for a different experience most all the time. For some, that is a good incentive for replayability.
