EDIT: Guys...please read the OP properly before posting. I am not suggesting that all music nowadays is crap, that it was better before, that there is nothing good out there or that the radio is the only place to find music.

I am asking if people think there are any truly influential and world changing artists to come along in the last ten years that can compare with the greats.

I have been switching off the radio very often recently as all I'm hearing is awful, autotuned nonsense and I'm sad over the state of mainstream music these days.

Every decade apart from the last one has given us tonnes of classic pop/rock artists that have had a huge, defining sound that rocked the world.

The 50s had.. well, you know who.

The 60s had the Stones, Beatles, Bob Dylan, James Brown, Hendrix, The Supremes, Beach Boys ect...

The 70s had Zeppelin, Bowie, Grateful Dead, Stevie Wonder, Fleetwood Mac, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, etc...

The 80s had Iron Maiden, Guns'N'Roses, The Who (also 70s), U2, Metallica, Depeche Mode, Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Springsteen, Run DMC etc ect

The 90s had Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Public Enemy, NWA, Radiohead, Prodigy, Bjork, Oasis, Nine Inch Nails etc...

In the naughties, in my opinion there was not one band or artist who came along and gave us such new, fresh, exciting world changing music as all of these wonderful musicians.

Some people may count Muse, Arcade Fire or Kings Of Leon, to that I say fair enough for Muse, but AF and KOL have not (to the best of my knowledge) had nearly the same cultural and musical influence as most of the big bands of the other decades.

Or am I wrong? Will you show me some good music to make me smile, Escapists? Something with some heart and soul that came out in the last few years, that could be potentially as world changing as the greats?

Prove me wrong and I will be happy!

well, my favorite music genres are Metal and Video Game Music ... that wasn't really available before the 90's.
- so i have to disagree with you; the music that we have now is better (imo. of course).

Dude, metal's around since the 70s.

Sabbath, Maiden, Motorhead... all making the beatiful noise since then.

Video game music was around during the 80s too... it was just a lot more... 8 bit.

Well there's no ground breaking big bands in the last decade, but then I prefer more obscure stuff or metal. Not world changing as you say, but I don't really care for all the "greats" anyway. Out of every band you mentioned I only like Pearl jam and Hendrix.

So schmeh I say to big bands. Schmeh!

Ok, let me fix my own post: "that (my kind of metal and non-8 bit music) wasn't really available before the 90's"

Mainstream music may be in a bad way at the moment, but if you delve a little deeper into any genre, you will find some diamonds in the rough.

Enter Shikari is my band of the decade.

Edit: Sorry. You were looking for new bands..

Let's see what I can dig up.

The XX
The Raconteurs
Queens of the Stone Age [arguably of this decade]
A Place to Bury Strangers

The list goes on. You just need to look past what the radio is playing.

You know, the 'noughties' still has Radiohead, Mogwai and a plethora of other amazing bands. Just stop listening to the radio, or listen to a different station.

The Spice Girls and Boyzone were huge in the 90s. Is that any consolation?
To you, maybe, but down here in Mexico, the only thing ion the radio is either American crap or Mexican oligopoly-made crap. Sure, there are many good true musicians out there, but I think the point of this topic, and my deep fear, is that, for many people, radio is their primary source of new music, and that means that good music is truly dying.

I agree broadly with what the OP is saying, but only in terms of pop music. The stuff you hear on the radio is pretty much awful and over manufactured, but real music still exists, it's just that the mainstream now doesn't have anyway near the quality of for example the 80s.

It's impossible to measure the cultural significance of a decade when the decade has only just ended. As much as I hate pretty much all the mainstream music of the decade, bands like Muse might outlast the other performers who have had their careers made in the 00s. However, we cannot tell that now. After all, they said that Rock n' Roll was a fad, and look where we are now...

I think alot of people consider grunge to be rock 'n' rolls last legs...I'm inclined to agree, I can't think of much since that has been all that good. Maybe The White Stripes and the Black Keys, a few bands that were largely immitating old styles.

I'm not bothered though, when I got tired of angsty grunge, I explored the back catelogue more...and fell in love. Elvis, Buddy Holly, Howlin' Wolf, Bo Diddley, Leadbelly, John Lee Hooker, Hendrix, Zeppelin, Buddy Guy, Charles Wright, The Flat Duo jets, and I've barely scratched the surface, there already exists more great music than I'm ever going to listen to.

What in the nine circles of hell are you smoking, bro?
Honestly do tell me, because it must've really numbed you to make you think like that.
Plenty of people get nostalgic about the eighties and the like, but really? Are you telling me that just because there were a few notable artists back then that it's better than now? There are hundreds of notable artists and hundreds of notable crap artists both here, then and wherever you go. Music isn't in a bad state at all, music is music. You can count Justin Bieber and whoever you want, telling me they suck, and I'm sure they do, but THEY'RE NOT A PERSONAL AFFRONT TO YOU. If you don't like them don't listen to them, and for Athena's sake stop banging on about how great music was in your day, because it wasn't. There were good bands, there were crap bands. No difference. The era you grow up in influences your tastes, so when music "evolves" you'll completely hate what's new. That's the whole thing with "losing your edge".
Basically, shush. You're a tornado of bullshit right now.
I don't prefer this era's music to the eighties or any other era. I honestly don't mind what era we're sampling here, but I grew up in the nineties and the noughties, so my tastes are just as shitty as those eras, if that's how you want to put it.

Not... generally... listening to... rock n' roll?

Sure, the Beatles formula has persisted to even now, but I can't think of a single band from the 00's I'd place in that genre. The closest thing currently being produced is what country has become, and its all simply god awful tripe.

Iron & Wine made some of the best folk of the decade. It's chilled out without sacrificing lyrically.
LCD Soundsystem for putting dance back in indie.
The White Stripes for making blues cool again.
The Arctic Monkeys for making some of the best rock and roll of the decade.
Chris Thile/The Punch Brothers for taking the redneck out of bluegrass without taking out the heart of it.
and Kanye West (yes, that idiot Kanye West) for taking the faux tough guy act out of hip hop and replacing it with old school melody. I'm sure a lot of people here are going discount everything I say about music just because of this one. That's your loss. It took me a long time to get over West's personality and be able to appreciate his music.

Honestly, I don't know what you're looking for exactly. Music is subjective.
