Every now and again, whenever I'm feeling a bit down (so... kinda often actually) I like to listen to a sad song or 2 or 15. If I can find the right song, it makes me tear up a bit, if not outright cry a little, then I feel vastly better as a result.

This is one which speaks pretty strongly to one of the things that gets me down most often.

Tell me, escapists, what are your favorite/most effective songs for just such a thing?

Well, considering the emotional wreck the movie Perks of Being a Wallflower makes me, I will go with this:

Make sure you have a box of tissues next to you before you listen. I am a sucker for sad, depressing songs about lost love, deaths, and other miseries. I'll give you a warning what each song is about in the spoiler tags.

No song has ever made me cry, but I do love a lilting lament on occasion.

I still prefer theirs over the original.

Again, a cover version, but i still prefer this one.

Ooooh right, hey this isn't music, but if anyone wants to clear any debris from the corners of your eyes, give this a watch.

Just about 7 minutes long. I promise it'll be worth your time:

I have a few strange ones though most of them were for videogames or featured in a videogame.

Mostly classical music, honestly. Like Beethoven of course.

And Ave Maria holds a special place in my music library because of its use at the end of Fantasia (especially when paired with Night on Bald Mountain). I actually did a cover of Ave Maria (included it in the spoiler, sorry if it violates any self-promotion rules).

Apart from that, there's stuff by Debussy (Nocturnes) and Tchaikovsky. There have been scenes in films and video games that have brought me to tears specifically because of the music, examples being Howard Shore (Lord of the Rings) and Toby Fox (Undertale).

Okili...Am oft an emotional fuckwit so there are a few that affect a lot. Though coming off current meds kinda creates some sort of hyper-emotional state like that scene off Equilibrium when Christian Bale first listens to music. It is perhaps quite literally insane. But one gravitates to what speaks best for the soul;

Tales from the borderlands had a great end credits song that hit just during a bit of a bad moment;

Obligatory Eternal Sunshine soundtrack moment;

I can't test the quality of these just yet. :(

Somebody introduced me to this artist recently due to apparently their style sounding like the way I play. Not sure how accurate that claim is, but I do like the emotion it produces;

Run
Night

Capo on 6th fret? Ugh, the endless retuning;

Ehh, not an original or original choice, but definitely the best version you can get;

Not the game, really;

Last basket;

All time fave from Alice in Chains, lyrics relevant still today, damn I miss grunge.

Gotye always seemed a tad bit pretentious, but this song... wow.

I was seriously in tears.

I mean, it's a little cliche but
I was tempted to add that song to my post. I won't say "cliche", but it is obvious. Like REM Everybody Hurts.
I mean cliche to include in these sorts of conversations.

I can't help it though, it's like not seeing Nirvana in a list of great 90's grunge bands or something.

Both tend to bring human loss or losses to mind.

This always pulls my heartstring eventhought I haven't played the game (seen lets play and I'm waiting for a sale)! It's made worse when you read the story when this is played.

Lots of music used to bring me to tears, particularly when I was having a drink or a few. But unfortunately the antidepressants have a way of numbing that response. Nevertheless, here we go:

Almost forgot, this cover may sound familiar to anyone who has delved into Nirvana at any point in the past. It sounds a lot more haunting and dark this way though;
