MW3 Changed Too Much, In My Opinion; Or, It's kinda crap!

I've defended Call of Duty quite a lot, once saying it's pretty much the best game series ever (and I still stand by that, it's one-of). The last four titles have been some of my favorite games ever.

Call of Duty 4 was pretty much perfectly balanced bar a few things. Then came World at War, which kept that balance and fixed the things wrong with number 4 (even though most CoD fans hated it - mainly on the bandwagon, before Treyarch became loved.) Then came Modern Warfare 2, which I hated at first but eventually learned to love it for all the whackiness that it was. And finally Black Ops, which was yet again perfectly balanced; however, the money system removed a lot of it's replayablitity.

Now this. If I were to put it nicely, it comes off as a steaming pile of sh*t. This isn't no bandwagon nonsense or hipsterism; it's really presenting itself as a steaming pile of dog sh*t, in my opinion. Where the f*ck do I even begin? How about I simply name a few:

1. There are NO large or open maps. NONE (from what I've observed). They're ALL tiny, closed up, flank-ridden piles of sh*t as far as I'm conserned. There is not one map that really stands out as being good. They all play EXACTLY the same with near bar identical layouts. I want to ask a question: Did ANYONE in the world EVER ask for all large/open/sniper maps to be removed? No? Than why the f*ck is there not even one? This is really my biggest concern. The maps f*cking suck.

2. There is no such thing as balance in this game. This was my biggest concern when I originally played Modern Warfare 2, but I eventually realized it's simply got to be played different then it's previous titles. Sure, you could say the same about this game; but no. Just don't.

Yet again, and even more so than Modern Warfare 2, the assault rifles are too f*cking overpowered. I shot many, many people with all types of shotguns, CLOSE RANGE and multiple times (3-4+) to have them turn around and shoot me with a silenced AR through a big thick concrete wall with simply a couple of bullets.

Oh that reminds me; when you get shot by an assault rifle, it literally feels like you're being shot by a SHOTGUN. It's looks, sounds and feels like your being shot by a shotgun. It's f*cking instant in some occasions and looks like a barrage of pellets. Assault rifles are more shotgun-like than the f*cking shotguns themselves.

3. Lag. I really need confirmation with this one, as it could be at my end. First I must say, YAY! Local search. I get into a fucking Australian game. So what am I whining about? Well even with 4 bars it's so f*cking laggy. I don't know how many times I've died without even being hit; getting shot well after I've taken cover. This is also related to number 2, overpowered assault rifles.

4. Spawns/Maps. Yes maps deserve to be used twice. I swear to fucking God, I've not once, in 500+ deaths been shot from in front. Every single f*cking death is from behind or to the side. Either A) I run past my teammates and 3 seconds later they're gone and someone shoots me from behind, or B) ... Well let's just say there's always some a-hole behind you. Yes, I watch my flanks. It doesn't matter though. Because some fucker ALWAYS comes up from behind you. I'm inclined to not even blame the spawns, and simply blame the shitty maps.

5. It's clear very little thought went into this game. Do you know how movies get a director to put every together nice and proper? Well it's clear this game had no director or clear goal set in mind. It's obvious someone simply browsed then net; "Oh! Someone suggested this! Put 'er in! Oh this random person whined about this! Chuck it in baby! Yeeer! BANG BANG BANG! Put it all in the game, EVERYTHING baby! Where or how you ask? Who gives a f*ck. Just slip it in where ever there's room".

Previous titles have all had some form of goal and focus, whether it be balanced or simply fast paced fun. It's clear they had an idea where the game was going and they stuck with it. In Modern Warfare 3 it seems like they just put whatever the f*ck popped into their mind at the time, with no second thought about it.

They've bent over and took it in their buttholes from every type of whiner out their. Whine about overpowered shotguns, make them weak; whine that quickscoping is too hard, make it easier than ever, whine about too open maps, make all the maps tiny. They've tried to give a little something to everyone, no matter how stupid it is, and now there's very little direction in the game.

6. They've tried to sugar coat the game as if it's all tactical, with teamwork and all that nonsense. It's clear anything related to teamwork is just eyecandy to satisify those who asked for more teamwork. There's still no incentive for teamwork. It's near impossible to use teamwork as someone always spawns behind you and takes you out anyway.

7. I won't even get into the player's playstyles, because we all know what that consists of.

I will stop now. Don't get me wrong, there are some cool things about the game. Well... um... gun leveling I guess? Eh, maybe... Actually, I'm lost for words trying to think of anything that's actually impoved.

If I received the game as a gift, I would play it and probably find ways to enjoy it. But knowing I spent AU$150 on it, literally gives me suicidal thoughts. I am considering returning it or trading it in.

I bought the f*cking Hardened edition, but I don't want 12 months of free DLC anymore, there's no way in hell I'll still be playing it 12 months from now. Please don't tell me, "It's just fast paced arcade fun." Because I acknowledge this, and preach it often.

TL;DR: The engine is still solid, bar the lag, but they've seriously f*cked with the formula. I honestly don't know if they can fixed it like they've had to with previous titles, it's the core of the game that's fundamentally f*cked... I'm putting emphasis on the maps, as quite frankly, I can pwn most people with ease (regardless of how unbalanced the weapons are). It's the maps that fundamentally f*ck this game. People are calling it MW2.5, but I'm calling it MW-2.5! They TRIED to copy Modern Warfare 2 but simply changed it TOO much, putting emphasis on things they shouldn't put emphasis on.

To be fair, I've had the game for less than 24 hours. I WILL play it some more and give it a fair go, because if there's one thing that I hate more than anything else, is people jumping on the damn bandwagon and not actually giving a game a chance.

Discussion value: Do you agree or disagree with any of these points, or have some of your own? Am I overracting? Please, no haters who haven't even played the game.

p.s. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say this will get very little replies because it's so long. Oh well, I've vented. It's time to play some good ole Modern Warfare 3, LOL. No but seriously, I'm trying to like the game.

I was worried about this, which is why I didn't bother to get it. Shame you spent quite a bit of money on it, and found it to be lacking. Also, not to flame, but your review has some moments (mainly point 5) that seem a bit too derogatory.

Regardless, this isn't the game for me, and the only thing I *sort of* want to do is see the single player. Mainly for the "I wonder what will happen to so and so" then "it's a great campaign! MUST PLAY". *sigh* still, this game will have a sequel. No point in worrying about a game you aren't getting, nor care to get, right?

Shame it will still sell 89734 bajillion copies in the next 24 hours anyway.
I havent genuinly enjoyed a cod game since World at War, and i doubt i ever will again.
Plus the lag... oh god the fucking lag... im certain they make the ps3 version shit on purpose.

I don't find it very different from MW2, however I do agree with some of your points. The devs seem to think no one wants to legit snipe, so they haven't included any open maps and made qsing stupidly easy, now any spastic can do it.

And the people spawning behind you think is ridiculous.

I however am still enjoying the game.

Give the maps a chance. I was thinking like you at first, but the more I've played them the more they've grown on me. They're actually similar to the maps in CoD4 in that many of them are either designed around "rows", or are like a big circle around a central killing area. Once you get their design in your mind's eye, you'll find yourself getting flanked less.

For the tactics...well, its CoD. To be fair, the support package IS fairly designed around teamwork. Maybe not directly, but every UAV or Counter-UAV you get is helping your team.

The Assault Rifles are pretty strong, but they've actually improved over Black Ops IMO. The damage falloff has been increased pretty dramatically, and they don't shoot like lasers anymore. If anything, the guns I've been having the most trouble with are the submachine guns. Strong, and super accurate on hip fire. But subs are always strong in CoD, its almost nostalgic for CoD 4.

Try this: Dont play online.

Play the story, which is why I loved MW2, get some achievements/trohpies, and spare yourself the headache of competing against that asshole who's been playing non-stop since midnight and is already level 50. I dont see the fascination of multiplayer....

Don't you know? Modern Warfare has always sucked. And why were you using a shotgun? Only the douchebags I know use those.

Don't forget they copy pasted buildings from MW 1 into the game

They got really lazy for this one

Oh and who was the guy who said we had no idea what we were talking about and that the games change drastically? What a lie

Edit: Ignore what I said about the buildings, everyone shouting OMG THEY DIDN'T CHANGE BUILDINGS made me forget that nearly every sequel does things like that, but I still stand by what I said about that dev, they still barely changed anything

Funny story: I just rented MW3 earlier today. I was playing the campaign for like 10 minutes before I realized it was actually CoD4 stuck in the box by mistake. Chalk it up to ignorance or my unfamiliarity with the first MW, but I don't they could possibly have changed less and still called it a new game.

I'm sorry, but no one saw this coming? Oh, wait I did. I'll get it for Christmas and have fun for two weeks, then give it away. Well worded, seems like good arguments. I haven't played it yet, but, I mean it's CoD. Don't expect much when going in.

Oh well. If I want to play CoD, I'll play Black Ops.

Because I seem to be the only person on the Internet who still genuinely likes the game.

But before I do that, Battlefield 3 still has the novelty value on it. Plus I'm liking it more and more the more I level up.

While I'm not going to buy CoD regardless of what they do to it, I'd like to point out the "Give it a chance" fallacy. I paid money - If I'm not happy then they haven't done what I paid them for, then they have failed and I wont be getting the next one. :D

No offense, but If you don't want your 1 year of Elite, can I have it?
Mate. The standard edition was $88, the Hardened edition was $150. I (stupidly) payed an extra $62 for some little code that gets me free DLC. You'd have to give me a reacharound or a gobby if you want that damn code. Baha!

The only point I can really give is the maps, they are way too small and clustered for 16 players.
Otherwise I would have to disagree with a good chunk.

I don't know what shotgun you're using but the ones I've seen actually have pretty insane range, hell more than once I've been 1 shot by a shotgun at medium range. And especially on these enclosed maps the shotgun can easily just be hip fired down a corridor and floor someone.
The only assault rifles I'll say are OP are the burst ones, they are pretty much instant kills at any range with a single burst to any part of the body, which is just hilariously bad.
I don't what to say about lag, I've only gotten really bad lag when it for some reason through me into an all french player map. Otherwise lag hasn't been a big problem.

The problem with maps and spawns right now is that everyone is doing it rambo style, which always happens when a game comes out, soon when people unlock all the stuff and mow these people down the numbers will drop pretty quickly and people are going to slow down and stuff running everywhere head first. That just happens with CoD, hell after my first few games of runnning headfirst into stuff, I just slowed down and started to patrol small areas and I go like 21 and 5.

As for teamwork I really disagree, the problem now is that I think most people dont realize that there are 3 branches of killstreaks. Support is probably the most obscenely overpowered kill streak set. But people just don't get it. Hell when you get an actual team that knows what the heart on the map is and actually gets their flak jackets and have a support guy tag a bunch of people with the recon plane then you easily start steam rolling the other team.

I just think the game needs a bit of settling time and once people start unlocking things the meta game will shift and you'll see people stop being complete retards. But yea the maps are really weak and just have some poorly thought-out areas, like the mall level, I just stay the fuck out of there because it is an absolute death trap. I haven't had a chance to try anything except deathmatch, but maybe snipers and LMGs have a place in team objective.

Well I need to know. Is the FAMAS still in the game? Also shame that it is worse. Glad I am getting it for the Campaign.

I think the majority of the maps are on the small (read - good for up to say 12 players) size, but there were a couple I noticed last night that were definitely bigger and were really good for snipers. Having said that, CoD has been known since 4 to be a better proponent of small scale battles than most FPS games out there, so it was no surprise personally that most of the maps were smallish.

Personally I like the majority of them and think they flow pretty well, but i've avoided TDM/Ground War etc like the plague so it may be different in those game modes.

So far I haven't experienced this yet, mainly because the real good AR's are unlocked at ridiculously high levels. I've yet to find a weapon that is totally OP. I've been running around with an UMP (starting SMG) and getting pretty decent scores most of the time.

The only thing that I think seems a little underpowered are snipers, but that's mainly due to map design than anything else, and I don't see it as a huge problem because they more than hold their own on the more open maps.

Are you sure it's net lag and not graphics lag? I'm in Australia too and have only had maybe one or two games where I was getting lag issues. It's definitely an improvement on MW2, the gameplay on the whole feels pretty smooth to me.

Yeah, spawning is always going to be an issue with small maps imo. I'm not getting it as bad as it's been in previous games, and I haven't seen players exploiting the system YET. I haven't been getting flanked too much from what i've played - but because i've been primarily umping, i've been constantly on the move.

This must be dependent on game mode, because playing DOM/HQ/SND, i've seen plenty of team work going around, including people using the team based kill streak rewards, and the rewards for completing objectives in those modes are better than they have been in previous games.

So far, I've really hated it. My bread and butter in Black Ops was the SPAS 12 and concussion nades. So far, all the shotguns I have used have been garbage. I don't know what to expect when I fire them. Sometimes I'm at decent range and get one hit kills, other times I need 3 or 4 shots. Close range is even worse, I actually had more success just spraying with an AR than with a shotgun. But what really bugs me is something I haven't seen mentioned yet, and that is the delay throwing tactical grenades. Unless I'm using my radar to throw them ahead, they take to long to throw to be useful in a firefight. Finally, the hit detection is crap. Granted, most of the time the ARs kill me before I even have a chance to react, but I can never tell where I'm being shot from. I'll usually just drop and say "that wasn't a headshot?" but sometimes ill try to take cover and end up on the wrong side of the wall.

Been playing a bit of MW3 in my friend's house, and while the SP is shit and according to him the MP isn't that great either, Specs Ops was surprisingly good.

Yes. Exactly. Sometimes the shotguns are one hit kills, sometimes they're pretty much useless (4+ shots close range.)

Also, I agree with the tactical grenades. Flash bangs were my STAPLE, now they feel useless. They're so slow (although there is a perk to increase it's speed), but even then, they don't seem to actually flash anyone. Even directly infront of people they don't work, yet I get flashed from a mile away. I'm beginning to think it's lag on my end; it's that bad.

Oh, and I agree with the ARs too. It's normally always instant death from them. Yet I seem to need half a clip to kill. This is on 4 bars.

I've yet to have a 'decent' or 'fair' game.
