"My Little Pony doesn't have adult humor/references" rebuttal. [New episode fanservice general]

This isn't a "you must like pony" thread. It's just a relevant topic to make considering the new episode.

This claim is ridiculous and has been given a rebuttal many times. Not that it has to have adult humor for adults to like it(I like children's cartoons in general, I like My Little Pony because it's cute and good. I could care less about this sort of thing, and people who think that something should have anything adult about it to be enjoyed by adults need to grow up themselves). This isn't some silly justification, because liking My Little Pony doesn't need to be justified.

However, I would just like to say that the latest episode piles on even more evidence against that claim. At this point, I'd say that My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic has more adult humor than the Powerpuff Girls. If not lots more adult humor/references that children wouldn't or shouldn't get.

Which isn't necessary, but does add to the appeal to the show. It's one of many, mind you. And I was reminded of trolls who make the patently false argument that "Powerpuff Girls has adult humor, My Little Pony doesn't".

I present to you, The Big Lebowski Pony:
I don't think it gets much more adult fanservice-y than this. It's over the top.

Also, for the fans: Are you comfortable with this amount of fanservice? A lot of the claims of fanservice were pretty teetery/shaky, and weren't an honest claim about fanservice because we don't know whether the stuff we enjoy was intentional or not. But there's no doubt that can be made that this right here, was pure and utter fanservice.

I, for one, love it. Not because My Little Pony isn't my type of show. I am a worshipper of everything and anything cute and girly. Well, except for the stuff that's made so horribly you can't stand it. But generally cute/adorable is one of my biggest hobbies in life, and I don't need any adult humor to enjoy something like My Little Pony. On the other hand, I don't think fanservice will ruin the show. I think it's things like this that have drawn in a larger audience than just my kind. Which means more people to talk about it with, and more fanworks.

I'm sure it wasn't done just for the fanservice....
hell, I'm sure some of the artists who came up with the idea were probably laughing about it at the time of drawing (or on computer, I don't know how the show is made...)

OT: Personally, if anyone watches this show to look at the behinds of ponies need to be checked... There's PLENTY of other places on the internet to get that...
Sure, it's in a kids show, and 90% of the more "adult" issues raised would go right over the kids heads (no pun intended)
Honestly, I don't care either way... I mean, it's not like there's anything there... I admit, the first time I watched the show I giggled to myself a bit, wondering how the artists could get away with it, but, it's just harmless... kids wouldn't understand how a pony/horse is "set up" (I can't think of better words) so, eh... I say leave it be...

Although when this episode came out, I was a bit surprised with how she was bowling... still funny though

That was fan-fucking-tastic. You don't need to get high to enjoy MLP:FiM but it helps. Probably just pulled in about 20,000 burnouts with internet access.

They've clearly got references for adults. The Scorpion costume comes to mind. (I'm terrible at examples)

They've got loads of "fanservice" in their advertisement. (ponygeist, bridlemaids, advertising on MLG...)

I wouldn't mind it during the show, but it would have to be subtle. Even those 5 seconds with Derpy in Luna Eclipsed was a bit much.

I must have missed the adult humor humor part.... can someone explain to me what I watched, and what it has to do The Big Labowski? Is every bowling scene in anything now a Big Labowski Fan Service?
Pause at 0:03, look at the characters, use common sense to see that it looks like the characters from Big Lebowski

Meh, after watching those clips (and some other episodes) I still don't like, just doesn't appeal to me, and colourful ponies acting all sweet for some reason doesn't set off my "cute" meter.

Doesn't mean I think anyone who likes it should stop watching it, just stop shoving it in other people's faces.

I'd like to think that wasn't intended as fanservice (or else another complaint against bronies is suddenly justified).

I find myself leaning towards the "STFU already" side of things. I don't see any reason why anyone should watch the show, but I don't care if people do. Why is this an issue? People are allowed to watch other kid's shows, regardless of how bad they happen to be.

Can anyone post pics of so it is easier for everyone to see?
Seems not everyone can see what is clarely in front of you.

I never bought into the idea of adult or high brow humor. Humor doesn't have a maturity level, if it's funny it's humor.

I don't think that including content which is pleasing to the older fanbase (Equestria Girls, Derpy as a canon character, chocolate rain, etc.) is a bad thing in itself. I would enjoy the show even more if the references were all relevant to meaningful to me, rather than what would be relevant to the target demographic (Castlevania vs. Rapunzel). The fact that the target wouldn't get the jokes doesn't affect how I perceive the show.

Including "adult" (in the sense of sexual or rude) humor, however, would be bad because it would undermine the fundamental quality of innocence that makes the show great to the fans. As long as the show maintains it's spirit, I think the content should respond to the fans. If the fans are older than expected, we should expect and accept it when the references start reaching farther back.

TBH, not really. It's one of the reasons I dislike "Lesson Zero" - it was an episode deliberately designed around Pony Memes - either inventing new ones (e.g: Sonic Rainnuke, Twilight's Chesire Cat face) or using old ones (e.g: "EEEEEYUP" (incidently, anyone notice Big Macintosh hasn't said a single line other than that and "EEEEENOPE" all season) or Fluttershy's OOC Memetic Badass status) as well as the idiot ball plot (as someone else pointed out on TV Tropes - "So, let me get this straight...she's honestly expected to find crazy shit to solve every single week? What the hell does she do in her spare time? Does she even have any?"). The ONLY upside that episode had was it allowed for episodes where not every Pony appears, thus avoiding cramming the script.

Anyways, I don't mind Pony Memes - for me, they're about as interchangeable as LOLCats, Pedobear, Screamers etc. What I do mind is where the memes detract from the story, much like the example above. Thank god the last few episodes have been cutting the memes down a little and giving us more straight adult humor. Now all they need do is have Big Mac speak a line that isn't part of his meme and things will be awesome again.

For me though, it can be summed up in roughly one line - "Congratulations Bronies, your succeeding in wreaking your own stuff!"

Did I miss a part with a really creepy pony dancing to Hotel California? Did I miss a fat pony with a gun who cares about the rules? Ball cleaning?

If you don't know what people are on about here, click the spoiler.

On the first video, starting at 5 seconds in. Pause the video. Do those faces not look familiar?

Surely you at least recognize John Goodman.

Edit: Oops! It appears I was just beaten to the screencap. Thanks!

i kind of disagree on that, lesson zero wasint a meme overload, at least not acoording to my interpartion, i dont think big mack nope was a refference to NOPE.AVI i think it was just a joke off the fact that his main line uttterd in the show is eyuuup,

Although this MLP related thread is more accessible to users than the last and encourages discussion, I'd like to take this opportunity to repost what I said in another thread in hopes that more users will see this post, lessening the amount of repetitive threads in the future.

This sort of discussion is better suited to the MLP: Friendship is Magic [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/MLP-Friendship-is-Magic] user group. Not only is it the second largest user group on The Escapist, but it's the most active as well.

This goes for all MLP related threads. Recently there's been a massive increase in these type of threads, which has resulted in many repeat threads, one thing we try to keep to a minimum in the forums. Please keep this in mind before you (any of you) wish to create another MLP related thread in the future.

That's a good point. A lot of memes outside of the show are also starting mainstays within the show itself. They can easily not be a fan reference. That's how good a lot of the stuff that the show already want to do is, that the fanbase picks up on and runs with them. There's no reason to assume they wouldn't show the Rainboom again, and would just show it to be popular with the adult audience, and every reason to assume that it existed in the first place because it would be popular with any audience. The Sonic Rainboom isn't a "brony" thing, it's a highlight of My Little Pony in general.

And honestly, even if they were, that was a highly entertaining episode for all ages. Having a few zany things does not make for a bad episode. In fact, in this case, it made for a quite good episode. Most of us loved episode zero. And I would assume the kids did too.

I don't think Lesson Zero was very fanservice-y. But even if it was, I wouldn't call that bad fanservice or a bad episode by a long shot. I'd say all of the things you mentioned added loads to the episode.

Though I would say that having a Big Lebowski cameo is undoubtedly fanservice. Not that it's a bad thing, but there's no way that's there for kids.

But well, that's just, like, my opinion, man.

Just for the sake of being able to post another good picture.

Yes you did.

Because children aren't supposed to be watching rated R movies.

Aren't supposed to, at least.

Adult humor doesn't have mean jokes that themselves are inappropriate, but references to other parts of culture that adults would be typically more likely to get. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I don't think "adult humor" is defined by being inappropriate for minors.
