I'm new to this website, and by new I mean I signed up about 15 minutes ago, but I see alot of people reviewing games and I thought I might try my hand at it, so here's my review on Assassin's Creed. Might be spoilers, depends on what you count as a spoiler.

-Graphics-

Assassin's Creed is good, from the moment you place it in your console you will be in awe, the opening cinematic can only be described as sublime, the in game graphics are just as good, you can stand on the tallest building and look down and notice even the most smallest of details etched into the buildings below, the broken windows, the scratched roofs, each are carefully etched into the game skillfully by the designers. The graphics are brilliant.

9/10

-Audio-

I don't remember much about the audio, that will be explained later, but I do remember it not sticking out very well, it wasn't very in your face and dramatic enough, sure at some points when I had assassinated an evil man and escaping from his guards heroic and fast music played in the background, this got me in the mood to play the game. However, this was cut pretty quickly for no reason and I was stuck with the normal game play music.

Besides this, the audio is very realistic when I talk about things like the characters voice acting, Altair had a voice that suited him well, but this was countered when I realised that as he shouts in anger, his facial expression is dry and unemotional, and it stays this way throughout the game.

7.5/10

-Story-

The story was... Interesting, I liked the way that it was split into two stories, Desmonds and Altairs, but to be honest I felt that this split was somewhat of a hinderence to the games story as well. Whilst Desmonds story was delved into, Altair's was somewhat ignored, sure, we find out about what he does during the game but we never find out anything about the actual him, nothing that makes you go "Hmm, I like this guy" Or "I feel sorry for him" etc. And at the same time Desmond didn't really act like a kidnap victim, I thought he was pretty damn calm for someone who was being forced to live another life and not that surprised that he was in danger...

I give the storyline...
8/10

It was good, it just could have been deeper and wasn't quite divulged as much as I would like.

-Gameplay-

This is the reason why I took the game back to the shop for Mass Effect. The gameplay itself is great, freerunning through the city, diving off of buildings, gathering information, saving citizens, fighting guards and assassinating targets... Unfortunately this is all the game consists of, it's freerunning through the city, diving off of buildings, gathering information, saving citizens, fighting guards and assassinating targets x 100. Theres rarely any variation in the game, I thought it was amazing, for the first ten minutes, and then I realised that the entire game is just that first ten minutes repeated over and over again.

Fighting is dry and repetitive, there is only three assassination animations (Besides the ones for main targets) And only about seven counter-move animations, this got stale. Fast. The fighting became nothing more than, Wait for enemy to attack, counter move, wait for next enemy to attack, counter move, and so on, and eventually once I had learned to master this tactic the game became much less than a walk in the park.

I will say that the gameplay does have some good parts, I enjoyed the free running, I enjoyed the diving off of tall buildings and I enjoyed the rest, it is a fun game, but I have a very short attention span and this game isn't anything thats going to change that.

Gameplay:
5/10.

-Overall-

As I said before, I returned this game within 2 days of getting it, in my opinion it isn't worth the money I paid for it, I'd rather just borrow it from a friend so I can get the last of the achievements.

Graphics: 9
Audio: 7.5
Story: 8
Gameplay: 5

Overall:
29.5 / 40

This review is entirely my opinion, everyone is entitled to one, if you wish to flame my ideas, go ahead, that is your choice, but don't expect any reaction whatsoever to your flaming.

Constructive criticism however, I accept.

Well done. Certainly one of the better AC reviews I've read. I like how you give a crap about grammar. Other good things... You were clear in your reasons, and backed up your points with evidence from the game. The langauge in the visuals section was rather flowery, however. This isn't a bad thing; it's just at odds with the rest of the piece.

Just so you know, if you were to write about your thoughts of Mass Effect, or anything else, I'd be willing to give it a read.

Good review. Clean, concist and simple. You motivated the scores, told us about the game and explained to us the ups and downs. However, if I have to point out something, I found the overall score a bit confusing. And by that I don't mean the score you gave the game, but the scale. Why not use a 10/10 or a 100/100 scale instead, I think it makes it easier to understand the overall score.

I encourage you to keep writing!

Thanks for the positiveness, I was going to average the overall score out but for some reason I forgot the existence of the calculator on the start menu, and just didn't bother.

This is my first review of a game in general, and I will write some more most probably on this website, probably Mass Effect unless I get some other sort of other really interesting and new game worth writing about. =)

I'd say that the average should be weighed up in your head, depending on what aspect of the game is more important to you and/or other people. This can be done in your head, giving the game a much more educated overall score. But that's so petty it makes absolutely no difference.

A very good review, concise and clear (unlike a certain *cough*retard*cough* who roams these forums*), I liked how you didn't wander off on any of your points, as I tend to do.

Keep going, you cold-hearted reviewer, you!

Good review, better than some others, whose name I won't mention (you know who you are). I especially liked how the review actually had something to do with the game inetead of just talking about how the guards see you too quickly(or some other obscure and insignificant part of the game). I think that you (Kitari) should talk to MGG=REVIEWS and show him how a review SHOULD be written. Oops, I guess I couldnt help myself.

I feel insulted that this topic has only generated 7/8 replies. A decent review comes once in a blue moon, and we only get 3 or so people who are willing to comment. I really do feel like starting a personal vendetta against MGG. His ignorance really does know no bounds; It's time to stop trying to "help" him and tell him exactly what is wrong and to shape up or ship out

I found the combat to be very enternaining. However, this was after I made the decision to try and make the combat entertaining. So I varied my attacks as much as possible, chose interesting fight arenas, and caught dramatic camera angles. I found that this made Assassin's Creed more challenging and even better looking, so good all around. That said, the fact that I had to do this to make combat more fun says a lot about the combat, which if played with efficiency, rather than virtuosity, in mind, quickly deteriorates into tediously reptitive counterattacking. Moreover, the way that particular abilities are withheld until Altair regains his rank among the Assissin's is, to put it bluntly, rubbish, and seems to only help make the combat more monotonous.

Yeah... that we have done. Well not specifically me, but he has been told to leave. He even made a poll if he should stop writing reviews, most people voted 'yes'. He decided to continue writing reviews anyway. Said something like "this poll was not to see if I was going to keep writing reviews. It was to see if I was going to keep writing reviews here at the escapist." or something to that effect, only with almost unreadable spelling and grammar. It didnt help that the choices were "stop" and "no not stop". I just think that he likes the attention, good and bad.

Oh, I didn't notice the final score. I wouldn't recommend using a total or average for that. A game is more than the sum of it's parts, so the rating should reflect your overall opinion of it, more than anything.

Made an account to reply to this thread.

I think using a number based scoring for certain aspects of a game is a bit wonky. 5 points taken away from 10 for gameplay? 2.5 from sound? What exactly commensurates half a point, a full point etc.

But the actual written value of your review I feel is spot on.

The game is certainly visually stunning, there's no doubt about that, the story is also interesting enough to hold your attention.

The sound is also great (when it plays) there are some nice little background soundtracks that play and the city-alert post assassination music can get you excited enough I suppose (sometimes I would avoid hiding just to keep the suspense up).

I guess being that this is a sandbox game it really reflects how you play in the sandbox. But you're right in the sense that Ubisoft doesn't exactly give you all that many tools to work with. I FEEL as though when I counter I am making combat decisions in the combo moves, but there's no documentation that shows it. The game certainly could have used a boost in that respect.

pickpocketing and eavesdropping could be used a lot more for sidequests/fun, actually BEING an assassin I suppose. But from the looks of Altair, he's all business so sidequests don't really matter to him.

I think if this game had a tad bit more GTA-Holy Land style, it would be a tad bit better. Upgrading weapons, outfits, maybe introducing a currency that could be used somehow. But I'm no game developer, I just play them.

I think it's still worth keeping on your shelf for those times you feel like moving through a crowd or starting unnecessary swords fights that you can most assuredly win.

edit: also I feel that the "more than one way to skin a cat" way of thinking could have been applied. Assassinations are really simple, using Hitman (blood money as an example) there was DEFINATLEY more than one way to do it, as well as different outcomes from the choices you make.

I was very upset to see that my review has fallen to second page, Lol so here is a bump whilst I'm writing my Mass Effect one.

I heard someone say AC was like a hot looking woman... but with no brain. IDK.
