My school has made a few pretty bad decisions in the recent years. we all do exams a year early and over 1 year (despite them being made for 2 years and most universities only accept 1 years worth), firing all but 1 geography teacher, not letting pupils use a gate to go home/to the shops at lunch (for food) and cracking down on full-contact sports.

but now, they have taken that final step. SMT[footnote]Senior Management Team[/footnote] has snapped.

we arent allowed to hug any more.
or, more specifically, guys arent allowed to hug people. because theyre insane.
and no, i am not making this up. one of my friends got a warning for hugging another guy.

so Escapists, i ask of ye, what are your opinions on this?
and has your schools SMT ever done something this insane?

Didn't we have topic like this a little while ago "Called has your school ever pulled a dick move"?

Umm, all my schools have pulled dicks moves. The hugging rule was added into my school but everyone thought it was stupid and rarely did anyone get in trouble for it.

ummm...most schools ban PDAs (Public Displays of Affection), but few really enforce it. The closest I ever came was when a random teacher came up to me and my girlfriend and said how good it was to see an interracial couple. It was really awkward XD

You're not allowed to hug people?

Are you in school or university? I'm guessing/hoping the former. It seems like a very bizarre rule to attempt to enforce. Was there any specific incident that prompted it, like, I don't know, someone getting hugged to death?

Take it a step further and kiss on both cheeks like other countries do for greeting instead of hugging. As long as you don't hug they can't *****, and you still piss them off.

Back when I was in A-Levels, my school tried something similar. A few other people and I got on the phone to some lawyers about it, the school got a few dozen phone calls and a few days later the rule was mysteriously repealed.

In your case, since the rule applies only to males hugging other males, you could sue for unlawful discrimination on the basis of gender and sexual orientation. If you get a lawyer on a no win no fee basis and go to the press with your accusations, you should be able to turn the screws tightly enough to reverse the decision.

I recall my own High School undergoing Prison-Transformation:

1) Replaced all of the reinforced glass doors at the top and bottom of the stairwells with these blue "fire doors" (which turned out to be the same model of Riot Doors as used in a regional federal prison; only with the Kevlar lining removed). Not only was it unnecessary, but also far more dangerous as you couldn't see if someone was going to open one of those doors at the top.
2) Hired a new "dean" (vice-principle) specifically for disciplinary actions; DESPITE ALREADY HAVING TWO WHO DID THAT.
3) New "dean" subsequently appointed a set of "wardens" to patrol the hallways and lunchroom
4) Outlawed all manner of clothing, and made the requirement for "shorts" to go at least 3 inches PAST YOUR KNEES.
5) Banned all manner of PDAs and touching up to and including HIGH FIVES. But handshakes were ok apparently...
6) Enacted an ordinance that required at least one police officer to be on the school premises at all times during regular session.

All this for a High School whose average class size...WAS TWO HUNDRED AND TEN.
Holy shit were they terrified of lawsuits. I couldn't even play my GBA during lunch breaks because it was "interfering with class". No joke.

That's retarded! If I were you I'd organize some sort of protest and fight this.

Or do that.

i was suspended in high school for kissing my girlfriend in the hallway. Despite the fact that other couples do it, the fact that we were a lesbian couple apparently made it wrong.

Apparently, some schools are just insane about stupid rules. Thats a pretty retarded rule though, seriously a hug?

I don't think I'd get through the day without a hug or two. I'm huggy. Hugged my friends when I got to school, sometimes between classes, and certainly before we all left. And that's on a good day. If someone was having a bad day? Hug-o-rama.

My old school suspended someone for holding hands with his Girlfriend, he was asked to let go of her hand and he refused. I'm not sure why she wasn't suspended.
We were not allowed to wear jackets inside, even in the winter when the school was freezing.

That's all I can think of that was stupid in my school.

All of that sounded silly, except for the no GBA during lunch. When I was in school(this was back in 19 something) We did not have all these silly rules, however, you could at no point have a GBA or anything like it. I gotta side, I fully support that rule, no GBAs(or their like), not even during lunch. The rest is silly.

I think that's great. Finally somebody realized that there's nothing more destructive than hugging. Well, maybe with the exception of video games. There's nothing more destructive than video gaming. Prior to inventing video games (and hugging) people lived happily, there were no wars or feuds. Because there's nothing more destructive than video gaming or hugging...
...Unless we speak about both hugging and playing video games at the same time. There's nothing more destructive than hugging and playing video games at the same time. Now, repeat that like a mantra until you'll start to believe it.

Really, people these days should stop to worry THAT much about young generations. :|

I had to think of this

Now a bit more serious.

I would ask a lawyer about this, as it seems to be pretty discriminatory and maybe go with it to your local newspaper - the school will most likely give in and change it back.

Is it just guys that cant hug?
If so, you can probably get that overturned on the basis of been sexist unless no ones allowed to hug, in which case its just daft that they seem to be banning contact...

The schools I've been to are already insane and don't allow stuff like that. As a matter of fact, I remember my high school threatened to suspend students for throwing snowballs, or even picking up snow in a manner that emulates starting a snowball fight.

I approve, yes, do this! You can even do 3 kisses and says its a regional thing.

Ontopic: closest dick move my french school did was ban smoking because it was the law and what not. So we would be told to move like 2 more metres away from school to follow regulations that we weren't smoking on school property. They didn't even try to prohibit smoking completely cos they knew it would be a hopeless cause.

Yay for growing out without proper social interaction/physical contact with other humans!

I'm assuming, based on your post, that girls are still allowed to hug others? If so, you should sue the school for;

1) Sexual discrimination
2) Ruining your social development
3) Being twats

My school went one step further: no physical contact of any kind with other students. And they were dead serious! It only started because people were play-wrestling and accidentally hurting each other a bit, so my school looked at that, and apparently "no touching any other student in any way" was the logical conclusion they came to.

And if you think it was just a "it's there but nobody cares" thing, one guy got sent to the headteacher and massively told off just for putting one of his friends in one of those friendly headlocks. You know, the kind that don't fucking hurt in the slightest? Yeah, apparently that was grounds for a bollocking by the head and a letter home to his parents about "aggressive contact with intention of causing injury".

Oh, and there was the "nobody is allowed to go the toilet by themselves" bit. And that one only applied to the boys. Because the boys' toilets were being vandalised, so they put that rule in place. Forgetting that someone else had to volunteer to go with the person who needed to use the can, so if that person was one of the vandals, their friend could go with them and double the vandalism. Logic is fun!
