Yes, I ripped off the pregnant rat thread, but this is actually true.
I just found out that I am going to be an Uncle in a few months. This is a pretty big deal, as as far as I know it's the first child of my relative familial generation. None of my aunts or uncles are grandparents, my brother and I aren't married (not that you HAVE to be married to have a child but I digress), and hell, the news is so fresh that only I and my parents actually know right now. Why they chose to tell me second over say, my brother-in-law's parents is beyond me, but whatever.
I'm excited! The baby is due shortly after I get back from my deployment, so I should be able to get to see it and everything. This may sound weird, but I always imagined (and still imagine) my prospects for children as fairly low, so I've often wondered what kind of uncle I want to be. I'm thinking I'll call him/her "kiddo" as a nickname, see if that sticks. I don't have a lot of money to throw around but I've always been pretty good with kids so I don't think I'll need to worry about having a good relationship with him/her. I will definitely try and make this kid a nerd, since the parents are the furthest thing from nerds.
It's not even my kid, but a new family member is really exciting!
