Yes, I ripped off the pregnant rat thread, but this is actually true.

I just found out that I am going to be an Uncle in a few months. This is a pretty big deal, as as far as I know it's the first child of my relative familial generation. None of my aunts or uncles are grandparents, my brother and I aren't married (not that you HAVE to be married to have a child but I digress), and hell, the news is so fresh that only I and my parents actually know right now. Why they chose to tell me second over say, my brother-in-law's parents is beyond me, but whatever.

I'm excited! The baby is due shortly after I get back from my deployment, so I should be able to get to see it and everything. This may sound weird, but I always imagined (and still imagine) my prospects for children as fairly low, so I've often wondered what kind of uncle I want to be. I'm thinking I'll call him/her "kiddo" as a nickname, see if that sticks. I don't have a lot of money to throw around but I've always been pretty good with kids so I don't think I'll need to worry about having a good relationship with him/her. I will definitely try and make this kid a nerd, since the parents are the furthest thing from nerds.

It's not even my kid, but a new family member is really exciting!

Congratulations! I'm an uncle myself and it's really both awesome and kind of weird to see your nephew/niece grow. I have one nephew who's almost seven years old and a niece who's maybe a year and a half old, and they're both pretty amazing. Not thinking you have great prospects for children is fine. I'm not sure I would ever make a good parent myself.

I'm not sure what experiences I could really say I've had as an uncle, but I definitely enjoy all the conversations I have with my nephew, and I've played plenty of games with him. He got a 3DS this past Christmas, so we can play Smash Bros. and Pokemon together. Or I can help him out in a game if he needs it.

Err... congratulations! [small]I suppose[/small].

Well I guess I mean it, I do have pre-emptive plans to raise the spawn of my own Sister (when she can be bothered going about that business) in a more nerdy fashion compared to whatever she'll be doing, so reading this post puts a smile on my face.

As I cannot yet, do make sure to go ahead with your plans. Your current avatar is a perfect fit for the nature of the thread.

Hooray! Congrats to you and your sister~
I'm an auntie to six, hope you're prepared for some babysitting! (One of my nieces is staying the night tonight actually).
Obviously I don't pick favourites but your first niece or nephew is always super special to you. My oldest niece is my little princess and she adores me. They're the most important to me in my whole family bar my siblings and mum obviously. The girls tell me things they can't tell their mums so at least they know I'm always here for them.

Make sure you're a cool uncle!

How could I not be? Unlike my older brother who is athletic, charismatic, like-able, and objectively good-looking, I am none of that oh god I'm screwed.

Well, first thing first, get a leather jacket and sell your motor vehicle for a motorcycle. It's a necessary first step in becoming "the cool uncle." You know, the one you don't get to see that often, but that buys you presents and takes you to see the R-rated movies that mom and dad don't want you to know about. Also, candy. Make sure you babysit, so that you can brainwa- manipula- enlighten them at a young age.

I've already gotten a head start on the nerdinization of my clan. I grabbed my brother and sister young, so their offspring are certain to raised in the ways of geek culture. My poor mum and dad are so confused right now, my sister has practically turned their house into a Ghibli shrine. Meanwhile my dads trying to figure out if I've corrupted the family.

Congratulations, all of my siblings are younger than me so I won't (hopefully) experience nephews or nieces for a few more years but I have a sister who is eleven years younger than me so I've had the 'help raise a child from birth' experience and it's great fun I can tell you. I haven't been able to get my sister into pokemon games yet but she does like Minecraft and GTA so I consider that a partial success for geek indoctrination. She's one of three serious members of my parody religion too so just a few more converts and I can have my own cult :)

Congrats. I am also an aunt but I did not get a chance to meet my nieces and nephews because they are at oversees so sadly I cannot give you any advice but at least I can say "Good Luck" to you.

Congrats! I just became an aunt because my half older sister had a child last year. I kinda wish I lived closer so that I could see my nephew more often. I'm the next eldest and well into bearing years. I am, however, not married so the pressure isn't as on as it could be.

Babies are awesome when they aren't yours. This is your big chance to become the cool uncle, take it.

I think that the internet was ruined my way of thinking, my first thought when I read the title was "Wait, it's the OP the father?".
Goddamnit internet and to smaller degree Game of Thrones.

Anyway, congrats for you and your sister...

But my rat just gave birth...

But my advice is big cheap gifts are better than small complex ones when they're under 5. That's how you win at Christmas.

Congratulations on your new daughter, or son! I just hope it's mentally sound.
I've been watching Game of Thrones, so my reality is still a little warped.

First, congratulations.

I'm sure it's different to having a child of your own, but it should be fun, or at least interesting, I'm sure.

Me? I have no prospects of ever seeing anything like that. I'm an only child, and I have neither the mental stability to risk having a child, nor in fact the basic physical ability I think...

Which... I guess I've gotten used to. But it does make me kind of sad. I'll never me a mother, or an aunt. My mother will never be a grandmother (my father died), my aunts don't have kids either...

I have cousins on my mothers side, but I have to face the reality that my father's family ends with me. Permanently. Because there is no-one else, and my chances of having a child are practically non-existent. (and besides which it would be highly irresponsible for someone like me to have a child even if that wasn't true.)

So uhm... Wow. Sorry to be so depressing... -_-

I probably shouldn't have said any of that... >_>

Anyway, hope you get to have fun being an uncle... XD

His sister's babies and your rat babies should have a play date.

Congratulations.

My sister has jokingly told me that when she has kids I'm not allowed to babysit. She plans on being strict and making them vegetarian. I'm not a vegetarian and I wouldn't make any complex meals either. I would most likely end up taking them to some fast food place or something.
