Okay here's the quick story my sister is in Grade 9, before a dance she had every intention of drinking but didn't like what they got and only ended up having two sips. She continued to go to the dance where one of her friends threw up. They ended up all getting pulled into the office where my sister admitted to drinking before the dance. Now I need your guys help. She ended up getting a 10 day suspension, is this right? I figure because there was absolutely NO drinking at the school and my sister wasn't even close to inebriation that she shouldn't be suspended. Does anyone know anything that could help.

P.S. We live in Canada if that matters.

Are you asking a moral questions or a question regarding the school rules? There's nothing wrong with it, I suppose, but if it's part of the school rules, then she shouldn't have done it. Doesn't matter about the quantity.

My school had the same policy. If you have been drinking before the dance, you are not going to be admitted in. She took two sips, and that's all that needs be said. That is enough evidence to convict her and she needs to take the punishment.

Granted, ten days seems rather steep, but that's the school's decision, not ours. She did the right thing by admitting that she drank beforehand I will say.

Yeah, unfortunately, school policy is still school policy. Quantity, especially under the legal age tends to be frowned upon.

Here in the US, someone underage has a MUCH lower "legal limit" than someone than whose legally able to drink so.

Anyhow, theres not much you can do.

You said she had every intention of drinking. She's in ninth grade, she probably shouldn't be getting drunk just yet. Maybe this will discourage her from trying it again until she's older. I'd say it was justified.

Unfortunately there is no amount of logic in the universe capable of overcoming these zero tolerance policies. The schools set the zero tolerance policies because legally its the only way to cover their own asses. Short of appealing to a legal authority (which would be a ridiculous process, and likely wouldn't pay off anyways) over a measly 10 day suspension this is one you really can't do anything.

Anyway, she likely had more than "two sips". The story seems like crap to cover her for getting caught drinking. It's a ten day suspension anyway, she should just enjoy the ten days off school.

Absolutely.

The point is not that people show up drunk, it's that they don't drink at all. 'I just had two sips' isn't defensible compared to 'I had zero.'

Plus, someone got pukedrunk... which is exactly why they're trying to avoid. Remove peer pressure and all that.

Okay, why was she drinking? Did she honestly think she wasn't going to get caught? I'm below your country's border in terms of geographic location, therefore I'm not privy on the tolerance you guys have for drinking, and thus I can't really deem the severity of the school's sentence as being justifiable. But I still have to ask, what did she honestly hope to gain from drinking at a dance? Nevertheless, no I do not think what the school did was inappropriate. She was caught with an alcoholic drink on school property, and thus she was in every way liable for the consequences that would follow. If anything it's best to hit these situations hard right from the get go since it takes so much more effort to discipline teenagers now-a-days. Well, aside from beating some sense into their thick heads, but even that doesn't take hold most of the time.

Yep that sucks and unfortunatly my friend not I nor anyone else on the internet can help her. but thats high school for you. by the way I have no problem with drinking in high school, you're kids suppose to do that sort of stuff.

Well, not much the internet can do for your sister. She told them she had some alcohol and that was all that was needed. The law isn't a friendly thing and hopefully this will serve as a good lesson for the future. Is it fair? Nope.

Your sister was part of a group involved in underage drinking. Then they decided to show up at the school while drunk. If the school had not punished her what kind of message would they be sending?
Please don't try to justify it by saying she only took two sips. She needs to understand that kind of behaviour is unacceptable.
