Mysterious Countdown Ticks Away at GOG.com

There's a big countdown clock ticking away at GOG.com [http://www.gog.com]! What could it be?

I hope you didn't come here looking for the answer, because we don't know what it is. And even if we did, we wouldn't tell you. You'll find out soon enough anyway: There's just one day, 17 hours and change remaining before the big secret is revealed!

Will it be something big? Something huge? Something so mind-bogglingly awesome that our brains are at risk of being flattened into gooey gray pancakes by its life-changing magnitude of its blinding-white glory? Okay, probably not, but I bet it's going to be pretty cool. The countdown clock has the words "Expect the unexcelled" hovering over it - not much of a hint, but great fuel for speculation.

The heavy us of "ex" in the countdown title has led some forum posters at GOG to believe that the big announcement will be the arrival of the Ion Storm classic Halo [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_Ex] has also been suggested as a candidate, since Halo has four letters and the countdown has four elements. Hey, I didn't say it was a great theory.

The countdown has actually been running for a few days but GOG only recently started dropping of hints on its Twitter [http://twitter.com/gogcom] blog. The first, posted yesterday, described it as "The return of incredible karmic awareness," while today's clue is, "They are two different characters, but they complement each other beautifully." Got some ideas? Let's hear them!

With such a terrible tagline it's got to be Japanese company using a cheap translator, just gotta be man.

Or A rollover to another clock.

Deus Ex would be world rockingly good news though, so it's not going to be that.

Well, after looking through some of the games on the website, I can say that clearly...

I have no clue.

I, suppose with that hint, one of the original Sam & Max games is a possibility...

"...Two different characters, who compliment each other beautifully..."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the player allowed to pick whether or not J.C. Denton was a guy or a gal?

That's when they can open the barrels, I hope.

Unless whiskey is somehow involved, I won't be all THAT interested.

Well with a tagline like that, I can only imagine that it's some sort of competitor to Microsoft Excel. Which would be awesome, by the way; imagine all the new things we might be able to do to spreadsheets. I can't wait!

I'm sure there was an article about this when that MGS teaser page came up last year, but I hate this trend of annoying countdown clocks. Everyone springs into gear and analyses every last pixel (hell I actually looked at the source code so i'm one too) to crack the mystery. The only good mysterious page was whatsinthebox.com with that awesome video everyone thought was a viral teaser for Half Life 3, but turned out to be just some guy's video.

I don't care what the countdown is, and I suggest everyone ignores it so these stupid marketing stunts will stop.
