Leslie Nilsen is one of my favourite actors who was in some of my favourite movies. I think...well, everything of his makes me laugh. Mr Mcgoo (erm, sp?) less so but everything else is high class. I really should go back and rewatch some of the movies again.
OP, did you know the Naked Gun movies were based on a TV Series called "Police Squad!"? They're so similar, they even share jokes. If you like the Naked Gun, check out Police Squad!
Sweet Jesus, the beginning for Naked Gun 33 1/3 may be the best intro for any film ever.
"It's the President!"
"And the Pope!"
"Look out, disgruntled U.S. Postal workers!"
did you know he starred in Forbidden Planet? He started his career with less comedic roles like the captain in The Poseidon Adventure, though it was through parody and his incredible ability to play the absurd totally straight that he is best remembered

That's one of my all time favourite classic comedy films which I still loved! They know how to do a real comedy/ spoof films unlike those scary movie franchise.
It's the perfect example of throwing everything at the camera and seeing what sticks; if one gag falls flat, who cares, there'll be another along in three seconds.
Of course you miss him! And don't call me Shirley!
R.I.P. Mr. Nielsen. :'(
He had such wonderful deadpan delivery, that it became disorienting to see him in a "serious" role, like Forbidden Planet or when he was the bad guy in an Evel Knievel movie (granted that's stretching the definition of "serious").
Growing up, I always preferred comedy over action movies, so I first saw the Naked Gun movies long before I'd even heard of the movies they were spoofing. I didn't even KNOW that they were parodies of anything.
One of the hallmarks of a well-crafted parody is that it works even if the audience is unfamiliar with the source material. I can personally vouch for the Naked Gun series in this respect. I actually saw the character of Frank Drebin as a legitimate action hero, earnestly doing his best to save the day despite overwhelming odds and his own rampant incompetence. Certainly I found his exploits hilarious, but since this was my very first time watching the ancient action-movie cliches that were being played purely for laughs, I got plenty of genuine suspense as well!
Certainly, the awesomeness of the Naked Gun series was due in no small part to the brilliant scriptwriting and direction, but the lion's share of the credit still goes to Leslie Nielsen and his near-superhuman ability to stand in the middle of a hurricane of pure insanity and deliver the most absurd, over-the-top lines every bit as seriously as if he were addressing the President on live TV. (The immortal lines of "Move on! Nothing to see here!", spoken as a fireworks factory repeatedly explodes directly behind him, come to mind here.)
The greatest thing about Nielsen, I think, is that no performance of his ever feels half-assed. Even in the cheesiest of movies, he would always do the very best job he possibly could. Respect.

There's nothing like the feel of swimming in raw sewage!
God I love Leslie Nieslon. Such a shame when he died. I had to watch Airplane to recover from the emotional blow.
He also was the best part of Scary Movie 3.
Miss his comedies. Thank goodness he left Airplane!, the Naked Gun trilogy and Wrongfully Accused behind. As well as having the best parts in those awful Scary Movies.
Leslie Nielsen was pretty much one of my favourite actors of all time and top on my list of famous people I would love to meet, it's a great shame he passed away, comedy lost a great hero that day.
