Do you mean ONE game that is still "playable" /not "playable" anymore, or a game franchise/series?

appologies if it's just me who don't get it

EDIT: seeing how people reply i'll just go with the flow

Warcraft 3 has aged well, not only because it's popularity ensures many users on Bnet, but becasue it's awesome map editor ensures new content from dedicated users, a million TD's, all types of mini rpg-ish maps and last but not least DotA.
Does work well for most games with good options for user made content

Battlefield 1942 didn't age well even though ti was a good game, but due to it's by far superior followers, BF2 makes BF1942 sit on the shelf and gather dust, it's just taken everything godo from 1942 and added tons of new stuff.
Same goes for other "pure gameplay" games (fps, sports, fighters, raceing etc.) with better sequels

I would say Super Mario 64 is a game that has aged well since I can still play it and legitimately enjoy it.

On the other hand Super Smash Bros hasn't aged well because the novelty of it quickly wore off.

I think Homeworld has aged magnificently. The gameplay is still compelling, and the more stylized 3D graphics really maintain their visual attractiveness to the degree that I think it still looks better, aesthetically if not technically, than the more recent Sins of a Solar Empire.

In terms of games that don't hold up so well, I'd have to say that The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall really falls short in the face of the third and fourth entries in the series. It was revolutionary when it came out, but I think a lot of what made it great has been so successfully improved by later iterations in the series, that there's really no reason to go back and play it now.

I think Super-metroid has aged very well and it's still fun for me.

I used to think Mortal Kombat 2 on the mega-drive looked ace. I saw it again recently and it looked bloody awful!

That's really funny, because I had definitely finished composing my answer before I saw yours go up.

Games that have aged well:
Most great games with 2D graphics: Fallout 1&2, Starcraft (hell, even Warcraft 2), Diablo 2.
Games that haven't:
Games with reletively early 3D graphics.
Sums it up pretty well. 2D games will keep their charm forever.

I think Fallout 1/2 has aged pretty well. Granted the graphics will turn away any 14 year old but as far as game play goes it still had quite a few advances over Fallout 3. Also I'd like to mention Yoshi's Island.

Game that hasn't aged well? The original Jax and Daxter.

deus ex. when you play a game for the first time 7 years after it orginally came out and can still see what everyone was talking about back then that really speaks for itself.

on the other hand, id have to say fallout. most of the people ive talked to that praise fallout night and day played it back in the 90s. i dont doubt that its a fine game, but ive yet to talk to anyone whos just tried it for the first time recently whos been able to get past playing for a few hours.

My picks for ages well:

Homeworld (all of them from the OG to Cataclysm, to II)
Morrowind, still engages me and gets me hooked after all this time.

Aged Well?

Saga Frontier 2, an RPG for the PS1 which boasted brilliant looking Watercolor Backgrounds and 2d Sprites... and because it's turn based it feels archaic, but it doesn't show any notable holes in playablility like some Real Time games from the era do.

Aged Poorly?
Metal Gear Solid, this game, while it is still passable, feels VERY dated when compared to the newer entries in the series, especially when you look closely at the joints in the character models during "shirtless" cutscenes.

Good: Grim Fandango
It's still a fun and attention grabbing game that requires you to use your noggin' or at least rub every item you have on a door until it opens.

Bad: Resident Evil Series
I loved the early installments purely for the survival horror aspect of it, but ever since it went crazy with ethnic killing and chainsaws, I have completely lost my faith in a return to survival horror titles in Resident Evil and, fir that, any game ever.

Any game in the Zelda franchise, as I can still pick any of those up, play them, and enjoy them. The original Metroid, though fun, has not aged well mainly because of the inclusion of maps in the later games, making the games a whole lot easier to naviagte, and making the first one feel dated.
