Seeing as how this is JRPG issue still, thought I'd start a topic and maybe spotlight some games that every fan of the JRPG genre should play. Also, I imagine that I've missed a game or two and am interesting in what I should go back and play. Feel free to add an 'honorable mention' if you have a lot of trouble choosing. So here is my list:

[sub]I'm going to personally skip 1st and 2nd generation because I wasn't born yet and I'm not really sure if anything on ColecoVision counts as a JRPG...[/sub]

3rd Generation (8-bit NES/SEGA MASTER): Final Fantasy - It basically invented all the tropes of the genre. An easy pick IMO. It hasn't exactly aged well but I still play it every now and then for nostalgia.

4th Generation (16-bit SNES/GENESIS): Final Fantasy 3(6) - This was actually a tougher choice than I thought it would be. I really wanted to put Lufia 2 Rise of the Sinistrals on here, but it just can't hold up to Final Fantasy 6. Nothing was quite as expansive as FF6. It was really unlike any game I'd ever played before. The huge world, the world ending in the middle of the game, the variety of great and interesting characters, the myriad of secrets you could uncover - this game is still fantastic.

5th Generation (64 bit PS1/N64): Suikoden 2 - Another tough choice, as in my opinion the PS1 was THE Roleplaying Game console. I enjoyed FF7-FF9 tremendously (even the much Spooned FF8), but the game I keep coming back to is Suikoden 2. The character recruitment, the town building, the army battles, the duels, the minigames, this game really had it all. There is so much variety to the gameplay here that it feels like a different experience every time I play it.

6th Generation (DC/PS2/XBOX/GC): Xenosaga - To me this is no contest. I felt that the PS2 RPGs were lacking, going for pure spectacle in many cases. Xenosaga really stole the spotlight in storytelling terms. Some might say a little too much, seeing as how the whole 3 game series has like 100 hours of cutscenes. I personally enjoyed all the themes and sideplots, and I feel its one of the truly great epics of gaming. If I had to pick, I'd choose episode 3 as my favorite. I am also ashamed to say I haven't played any of the Persona series.

7th Generation (X360/PS3/Wii): Tales of Vesperia - Play this game immediately if you are a fan of JRPGs. It blows everything else out of the water. The dialogue is some of the best written (and best translated) I've seen in any JRPG by far. The characters develop in interesting ways, the voices are generally well acted (except for one child character, but he never stood a chance), and the story is epic and engrossing. The combat system and gameplay is also fantastic. It's a mix of real time and turn based, where you control the way your character moves around the battlefield (think Star Ocean 2 if you've ever played it). There is tons of stuff to unlock, tons of secrets to uncover, and a really deep item/equipment/skill system. Eat your heart out, Final Fantasy XIII. You wish you were this good.

EDIT to include handhelds:

Gameboy: Pokemon Red - When Pokemon first released I was already in High School, but I am not ashamed to admit I played this game everywhere I went. It may seem commonplace now, but Nintendo knew what they were doing when the unleashed Pokemon on the world. The originals are still my favorite (mostly because the game hasn't changed much in the past decade).

Gameboy Color: I have no idea :( . This is a handheld that I did not own and am woefully ignorant of.

Gameboy Advance: Golden Sun - excluding tactical RPGs like Tactics Advance, Advance Wars, and Tactics Ogre I think Golden Sun is really the best traditional RPG on the GBA. The graphics and music are breathtaking for a handheld, the combat and magic system are deep and addicting, and it's a fun game if you can lose yourself in it. The story is trash though, sadly.

Nintendo DS: The World Ends With You - This game is just the right amount of silly JRPG cliches mixed with engrossing and deep gameplay. It's also one of the few DS games that I felt worked the touchscreen gimmick into the controls in an intuitive way.

Sony PSP: Valkyrie Profile Lenneth - I know this is a remake of the PS1 game, but I really feel like its earned this spot. The new scenes and animated movies are absolutely worth the price of entry, not to mention a great translation. If you've never had the joy of playing Valkyrie Profile on the PS1 and have a PSP you owe it to yourself to play this game.

So what are your picks? I know many people have their favorite generations of gaming (usually whatever is most tinted by nostalgia - 4th and 5th for me), but try and choose one per with maybe the odd honorable mention or two.

3rd: Final Fantasy 3, it's too important to -not- be here. The job system made FF5 my favorite. It came out of FF3 :p so 1 takes a back seat even for as important as it is.

4th: Chrono Trigger. because for all FF6 did right, it can't compare to Chrono Trigger's story and presentation. (Honorable mention for this generation though, Star Ocean.)

5th: This is where I stopped caring about JRPGs. So my list ends here <_< (I also never had a playstation during this time...)

...So yeah there you have it. ...My short lived JRPG history.

3rd Generation (8-bit NES/SEGA MASTER): Phantasy Star or Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior/Quest 1 to four. (didn't like any of the jrpgs but those are the most noticeable that generation.)
4th Generation (16-bit SNES/GENESIS): Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 6
5th Generation (64 bit PS1/N64): Suikoden series or Xenogears (even with too many random battles, and the fucking annoying tower of babel this game is still one of the greatest JRPGs)
6th Generation (DC/PS2/XBOX/GC): Final Fantasy X
7th Generation (X360/PS3/Wii): Enchanted Arms. It was the JRPG I found most fun overall this generation. Even with having a bad story and too many random battles, the battles were still quick paced and had a bit of a tactical feel. (and Yes I played Lost Odyssey which I would probably put as the best this generation if it didn't have terrible loading times. I also played Enchanted Arms, Eternal Sonata, Star Ocean IV, Blue Dragon, Tales of Vesperia and maybe some others. Just this generation has been the weakest JRPG wise I think overall since the regular NES. Maybe because I only have a Xbox 360 this generation. Or maybe I'm just getting tired of the genre. )

I'll start off at 4th Gen...to little to have played any further back.
4th Generation (16-bit SNES/GENESIS):Final Fantasy 6
5th Generation (64 bit PS1/N64): Sorry but I am adding the Sega Saturn into the fray because of the great Panzer Dragoon Saga, which I adore. I still play this game a lot and think it's still a absolute gem. Final Fantasy 9 is great too, My fav out of the PS1 era by miles.
6th Generation (DC/PS2/XBOX/GC): Persona 4, Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call/Nocturne, and Skies of Arcadia
7th Generation (X360/PS3/Wii): ...Does Disgaea 3 count?...

Eh, I'm not really fussed about JRPG's...I like Western ones.

As i'm sure most people responding to this thread will say:

You missed chrono trigger.
And possibly Secret of Mana. Never played it but I often hear it ranked up with Chrono trigger and FF6.

I can't really make any picks because aside from Chrono Trigger, I really haven't played many JRPG's.

Starting at the 4th generation because I'm not to fammilar with NES RPGs to make a decent choice

-4th Generation (16-bit SNES/GENESIS): Final Fantasy 6,to me the quintessential JRPG.It has a tight battle system, likable characters, and a real awesome plot with a great twist.Plus it has Kefka, who sits firmly at #1 my list of top 5 villains

5th Generation (64 bit PS1/N64):Wild Arms 2,though FF9 could take this spot if I'm in the mood. Wild Arms 2 tried cool ideas like the being able to skip any random battle, not relying on a traditional magic meter. It also has what every JRPG need a strong likable cast.

-6th Generation (DC/PS2/XBOX/GC): Persona 4,while Persona 3 redefined(at least to me) what a JRPG could be,Persona 4 perfected it.They nailed the pacing, streamlined social links, fun characters, and a great murder mystery plot. Tales of Symphonia is a close second due to taking a the big book of cliches and making them awesome.

-7th Generation (X360/PS3/Wii):Tales of Vesperia, a product of endless tweaking form previous Tales battle systems plenty of side quest and just a sense humor(which all games on this list have).Though I'll admit the story shits itself around act 3 and the final boss sucks but the great cast of characters makes it worthwhile

I'd consider Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana borderline. Secret of Mana especially is more of an action adventure game. But even with Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana I prefer FF6 and Lufia 2.

Most of the JRPGs I like are for the DS, so this one's quite tough for me, since I can't even put DS games as my entries, it seems.
Jesus, what would you choose though? Although I have to say, my favorite JRPGs on the DS (and GBA) tend to be remakes of console games. FFIV, FF1+2, Chrono Trigger, Disgaea DS, etc. Although as far as original DS titles I'd have to go with The World Ends With You, probably.

3rd Generation - Final Fantasy: Yes it's better than Dragon Warrior and yes it's the only other NES JRPG I've played.

4th Generation - Final Fantasy VI: Yes it's one of the best games of all time. Special mention to Chrono Trigger

5th Generation - Vagrant Story: Amazing graphics, amazing story, amazing gameplay...can't be beaten, if they made a Vagrant Story 2 for this gen it'd be a day one purchase. Special Mentions to Final Fantasy IX and Skies of Arcadia.

6th Generation - Easy, Final Fantasy X: The amount of effort put into this game, the fact that almost every character (even NPCs) has a voice, it feels busy, it feels urgent, the characters are great and unconventional, the graphics are superb, the soundtrack is just less than perfect, simply a special game. Special Mentions to Dark Cloud, FF12 and Tales of Symphonia

7th Generation - Urgh, I don't wanna say it but Tales of Vesperia: everything great about Symphonia but with probably the singular best main character of any story I've ever experienced on top of an unpredictable story, gorgeous graphics, beautiful soundtrack, perfected gameplay, this game really is the cream of the crop this gen. Special Mentions to Demon's Souls, Valkyria Chronicles, Final Fantasy XIII and Nier

Handheld

GBA - Golden Sun 1 and 2: Joint award because they are both truly great games with a brilliant data transfer feature, you need to play these games if you like JRPGS. Special Mentions to Fire Emblem and Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga.

DS - The World Ends With You: A brilliant, fun, engrossing game, good, well thought out characters, insane combat, simply a DS standout and the best RPG on the platform. Special Mention to Dragon Quest IX, probably other but I forgot them.

PSP - Only really played one JRPG on here and it's Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, which is amazing so I nominate that. Unless Dissidia counts but I say it's a beat em up.

Pokemon G/S/C for Gameboy Color.

And for the first generation, Zork, and Ultima 3 for the second.

3rd - Final Fantasy (continues to go without saying, but there we are)

4th - Earthbound, although FF6 and Chrono Trigger were amazing, Earthbound takes the cake for me on pure maniacal weirdness.

5th - Parasite Eve, although set in Manhattan, it contains many JRPG elements and a female protagonist who's not a total pushover. The item level-up system and interesting combat mechanics were also really fun.

6th - FFXII was probably my favorite, but by this point I have weaned myself off of JRPGs and have largely stopped playing them.

7th - Alas, I have not played any JRPGs for this generation for the above mentioned reasons.

While it was indeed awesome for pulling that off (and just being a bunch of fun in general), I'd probably have to pick Skies of Arcadia for that generation for the same reason: taking even more cliches than Tales of Symphonia was stuffed with while managing to be equally awesome. And there's just something impossible to dislike about an irrepressibly cheerful pirate with a flying pirate ship, especially when it came out after so many RPGs were trying to be darker and more serious after FF7, with "deep" (read: confusing/nonsensical) stories. SoA was very refreshing at the time, and so was ToS in a similar way a few years later (and Paper Mario: TTYD, now that I think about it).

I have no particular preference for anything pre-4th generation, because even though I was around for the earlier ones, I never really could get into JRPGs until the SNES ones.

I guess 4th would probably be FF6, although Secret of Mana is up there, too, not because it was remotely near as good as an RPG, or even quite as good as a game in general, but because of how great it was to play through the entire game in one (very, very long) sitting with three people. Several others were also very good, but I had the most fun and spent the longest with those two.

5th I may have to split between Legend of Mana and Chrono Cross, probably leaning slightly towards LoM. It was flawed in many ways, but the things it did right it did very right, and there were so many of them. If they still have the original files and whatnot, I'd pay good money for a rerelease of it with absolutely nothing changed other than higher-res artwork. I can still waste hours just running around looking at all the watercolored stuff and listening to the music and planning out the absolute perfect placement of lands and order to do events to be able to unlock absolutely everything.

6th I already mentioned above, but special mention to the Baten Kaitos games for being surprisingly good. Dishonorable mention to FFX for finally killing any interest in the FF series for me.

And call me weird, but the one I've had the most fun with in the current gen is The Last Remnant. Another flawed game, but when it's at its best, it's tons of fun, at least if you're into getting your ass beat and reloading your last save three or four times to figure out how in the world you're supposed to be able to survive something. Doesn't have a ton of competition for me, though, thanks to my only current options being PC and Wii...

I'd have to give credit to the rather obsure 4th generation action RPG Terranigma, aside from the usual mention of Chrono Trigger.

(Seiken Densetsu 3 is also worth a mention as one of the best things never officially translated. - That's Secret of Mana 3, in case you're wondering.)

Was the first Star Ocean ever officially translated? That's another one for that list. Although I have to say most of those I'd qualify as Action/Adventure. All great games, though.

4th Generation (16-bit SNES/GENESIS): Final Fantasy 3(6). Alt: Lunar- The Silver Star (Sega CD).

5th Generation (64 bit PS1/N64): Dragon Force (Saturn). Alt: Persona 2: Eternal Punishment(PS1).

6th Generation (DC/PS2/XBOX/GC): Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. (PS2)

7th Generation (X360/PS3/Wii): So far, not much to offer, but the best I've played has been Nier(PS3/360).
