There be spoilers here.

So I'm on what I presume to be one of the final story missions and I gotta say, this game rocks. Following that giant robot as he rapes the remaining Enclave has satisfied so many levels of geeky pleasure that words just can't give it justice. When it approached that force field and said something to the degree of "Probability of critical damage - ZERO PERCENT!" and then blew away that entire overpass, I had to pause the game and go for a cigarette. I just couldn't take that much awesome. Plus I had Fawkes backing me up, which just exacerbated the whole mess. I'm so glad this game surpassed expectations.

One question though to those who've played: I've done quite a few side missions and a fair amount of grinding, though I have yet to encounter Dogmeat. Anyone know when and where he shows up?

About as slow as Oblivion. You'll get out of the vault in around 20-30 mins then its all open world.

Good advice on the gamefaqs. I still have giant robots in my head, not practicality :)

I have heard, haven't gotten the game yet, that Fallout 3 starts of really slow. Is this true?
The beginning is a bit slow, but it really draws you into the world. There are also several things that you can simply skip if you just want to "get on with it". I'd say you could do it in 10-15 minutes if you want to get to the outside world quickly. Then again, character creation in most RPGs is presented simply as a chart of items to choose from when you click "New Game". This game kind of draws you into the creation process by allowing to choose your name, appearance, stats and abilities in a bit more natural way.

I found him pretty early on. He was in a scrap yard up on a hill - think it was near the drive in theater you're asked to explore in the blood ties quest - either that or just northish of the super-dupa mart
