DWARF FORTRESS
Infinite fun! Carp! Elephants! Death by murder! A detailed and semi-realistic retelling of a vast procedurally generated fantasy world inhabited by wonders and excitement beyond your wildest dreams! Magma! More death!
...I like Dwarf Fortress.
where do I get this dwarf fortress?
[a href="http://bay12games.com/dwarves/"]Here[/a].
I won't blame you if you don't want to try to get into it, but once you get over the 'D = nasty angry dragon' graphics and the hideous interface, it's very deep and enjoyable.
Also, people tend to look at you weirdly when you describe it to them, so that's a plus.
Play adventure mode first if the interface confuses you. Adventure is very simple(compared to fortress), and will let you get used to reading ASCII. Also, I'd recommend getting a tileset from here http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Tileset_repository and installing it. Personally, I use Herrbdog, because I like the smooth shading.
And remember, Losing is Fun!
how do I download/switch tilesets?
Ok, it's fairly simple. On that page, find a tileset that you like, then save the image as a PNG.
Then, put that image into Dwarf Fortress/data/art.
THEN go to Dwarf Fortress/data/init and open init.txt (this is a config file). Find the lines [FONT:Curses360x600] and [FULLFONT:Curses360x600] (I think that's the default filename), and change them to [FONT:.png] and [FULLFONT:.png] (where is the name of the PNG you saved earlier, for example, mine is Herrbdog_144).
Also change [BLACK_SPACE] to YES and [GRAPHICS_BLACK_SPACE] to YES as well.
When that's done, start the game, and the tileset should work. Also, You can resize the window to your liking, so if you think it's too small, just click and drag it to a good size (though, this will screw up the opening movies if you do it while they're playing, but everything else will still work perfectly)
EDIT: Edited to fix wall of text.
