My 91 yr old Grandfather has just been told (literally last night) he only has 20% kidney function and need to change his diet to preserve what he has left.

He has been given a list of things not to eat which include almost everything he likes to eat and eats on a regular basis. Overall they are all very negative. My family are now stuck, we dont even know what to make for tea tonight never mind the coming week!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Sorry to hear that. That's tough news.

You should really think about getting referred to a dietitian if you can.

As I understand it, he needs to avoid eating too much protein or salt, which means not eating very much meat or dairy and then eating lots of carbohydrates to ensure he gets enough calories. Things like rice, pasta and vegetables. Since fat isn't a problem, you could fry or roast vegetables in vegetable fat which will also help to keep the calories up.

It might help to know what kind of thing your grandfather likes to eat, and perhaps a little more about what he's been specifically advised to avoid.

We are looking into a referral to a dietitian, however, because the information came from A&E they don't refer people. He was given a letter to give to his doctor to get a referral and it will take time.

The man will eat just about anything but cauliflower though typically avoids red meat anyway. Its the fruit which are the big ones like bananas and raisins he has been told to avoid. Its been suggested onions are a no go and potatoes too... He's of that old generation what all meals should be meat, two veg and potatoes. The issue is being compounded atm because he is both iron and potassium deficient.

Sounds like he needs to see a good GP. Who can cease any nephrotoxic drugs and refer to dietitian and a nephrologist if necessary.

Which makes me curious why his doctor told him to avoid bananas if he's deficient-bananas are huge in potassium!
If it's low, but not super low. It may have been sitting at that level a while and isn't an immediate concern. But if he suddenly starts eating lots of potassium and his kidneys can't keep up, he could go hyperkalemic which can be a medical emergency as it can cause an arrhythmia.

I'm really not sure a gaming website is the best place for this.

Are there not actual forums online for this kind of thing?
