Hello Escapist, I post today because I am on a mission.
My mission, because I can't stand not taking it on any longer...Is to find a good typing game for my Father.
Problem is, he is not so great at reading. Mostly because he has dyslexia. However, it is important that he learn proper typing somehow and I figure that a game is the best way to do that. Currently his typing reminds me of myself and many other at about age 13.
I will note that he doesn't need to learn typing because he's going to be getting a desk job or anything. He is a tattoo artist, so that is not a big problem there. But he recently discovered social networking and such & I'd at least like him to be able to type up a simple resume without becoming frustrated.

If you have any suggestions please let me know, thanks in advance.

Embarrassing though this might be, I'm fairly sure Neopets had a typing game on there. Not sure if it's still online though. I can't remember what it was called, but I think you had to destroy robots by typing the words underneath them.
Also, there's likely a game on PopCap's website that might help.

I used Mavis Beacon's touch typing CD. Worked a charm. It doesn't take long either. There also may be better versions now. Basically it tells you which fingers to use, then tests you then gets you to type stuff that focuses on the problem areas. Took me about 3 hours to go from two finger Joey, to competent. There are also typing games in there for practice.

But there's also this http://www.freetypinggame.net/

I will look up that Mavis Beacon thing, thank you. I shall see if in the meantime I can get him to try those free online lessons. Thank you both.

If he'd learn well from a game, there's always this:

Its more game-ish than Mavis Beacon. The PC version goes pretty cheap, though there are also Dreamcast things if you happen to have one lying around.

Came here to say this. TotD is a damn good game in it's own right, and handily the easy levels are nice and calm while the harder levels are challenging unless your some kind of ninja.

Actually it was the new Extra credits that led me to Typing of the Dead, which led me to think a game was a good way for him to learn how to type. (More than 8 or so words per minute.)
However I haven't yet found the pc version anywhere, which is what sent me to the advice section here to find some other possible suitable substitutes.

Urgh, sorry to mislead. Wikipedia said it was available on Gametap, but I'm not finding it on their search on the website...
If you know anyone with a Gametap subscription or have one yourself, look to see if its available!
