Ok, so some backstory.

I have my modem, it has one connection. I have only two devices I use internet with, an Xbox 360, and my desktop computer. Because my modem only has one connection port, I have to switch out the cable back and forth. But, for whatever reason, the modem needs to be reset (unplugging the power cord and waiting approximately 30 seconds). It's just a real hassle. Would an ethernet splitter fix this, or would a router be better? I honestly don't know. And no, I don't really want to fool with wireless. Bad experiences in the past, and would rather avoid wireless.

thanks for the help.

Get a router. Your modem likely connects to your mac adress (nothing to do with apple) or something and thats why you need to reset. With router you can have both on at the same time. Router can work non-wireless too as it does for me.
