Not sure where else to turn. My Google skillz don't seem to be good enough and my friends and family have no idea how to fix this.

So, lately I've been getting a USB disconnect sound (like a little da-da-dum) over and over again. It's not always there, but every now and then I'll get it and it just keeps making the sound with 10-20 second intervals until I restart the PC.

That is until today, for whatever reason, restarting the PC doesn't do the trick anymore and I'm going insane.

Things I have already tried:
- Restarting
- Unplugging every cable one at a time to try and narrow down which one it might be (if any). With the exception of power cable and headphones for obvious reasons. No success.
- Disabling system sounds, for some reason still no success.
- Looked at the 'Safely remove device' thing to see if anything was disappearing and reappearing.

I am at my wits end, here's to hoping some of you knows what's up. Thanks in advance o/

EDIT:
Forgot to mention. It's a reasonably new desktop (bought last year) with Windows 10

For now it seems to have stopped again, but thanks for the suggestions. I'll update the post if the issue returns and one of your suggestions worked, until then, assume it's been solved and let the thread get buried :p

What version of Windows are you using? Laptop or desktop?

Beyond that, try this: Disable all network and wireless systems. Bluetooth, Ethernet, and WiFi. Don't unplug or disconnect - Disable them. Then wait a bit. Does the noise persist?

You might have a cable that has seen enough abuse to the point where it's rapidly connecting and disconnecting.
Likewise one of your USB ports might be having a connection issue.
Finally if you're getting any issues with all of your USB devices, then you might be overloading your USB bus, or it might be getting ready to quit on you.

Other than that... Have you tried uninstalling your USB driver in the device manager and restarting the computer? That will cause the system to reinstall the driver from the default .cab file. The reason to do this is corrupted data might be causing an issue in the driver your HDD/SSD's error correction can't completely compensate for.

I've had that a lot over the years, but it's because my mouse of the moment is dying, so the mouse keeps failing and then starting to work again, which is rather noticeable.

Oh right, I should probably have included that.

It's a reasonably new desktop (bought last year) with Windows 10

The sound seems to have stopped...for now, but I'll keep in mind to try and disable all the network and wireless systems.

I have actually tried reinstalling the drivers for my USB devices, forgot to mention that one. I can most certainly try again though. However, like I mentioned above, the sound seems to have stopped for now so I'll keep it in mind if it reoccurs.

Now that you mention it, my mouse is rather ancient. I should probably look into getting a new one either way.

While you're in the right spirit, you're not on the right track. I mean go into the device manager, find the USB controller and uninstall it's drivers. This will cause your USB to stop functioning entirely until after you restart, because Windows will have to reinstall it's own default driver for the USB controller. Although you might want to have your Windows 10 disc to hand... I know that the reinstall is automatic on boot from Windows 95 through to Windows 7, I don't know if Microsoft pulled a dick move and removed that feature in 8, 8.1, or 10 though.

Ooh like that! my mistake. Right, I'll see if I can try that too. Although, my PC is a prebuilt one which had Windows 8 already installed and later upgraded to Windows 10. I'll see if I can find out whether or not Win 10 still has the automatic reinstall feature first, just in case.

Just one other thing that wasn't mentioned.

While I fully regard this as the dumbest tech answer I'd ever heard from a tech support employee, there is also the slight possibility that "Your ports are bad", meaning that the interaction of the cable and USB plug isn't the problem, but a worn or damaged USB port itself. This is NOT likely, but possible if all else fails. Good luck.

USBs aren't the only thing that can cause that noise. Graphics cards and even hard drives can cause Windows to make that noise when disconnected or are having issues. Keep your eye on the Device Manager next time to see if any devices are going missing.

Go into device manager and find what is showing up and disappearing repeatedly or has a warning on it (and is disappearing and reappearing). Figure out what that thing is, and look up why it would be disconnecting.

Also, wouldn't there be an event in event viewer for all of these device removals?

EDIT- Definitely check event viewer, if this is happening every few seconds you should be getting hundreds of events an hour about it. That may help you track down what is the issue.
