Hey guys, recently I've been having some trouble with my laptop, and I was hoping someone on here might some clue to what has happened.

Not too long ago, my laptop's hard drive got corrupted (apparently caused by the battery overheating) which in turn caused my computer to delete everything, including the operating system.

Thanks to my brother, I got Windows 7 and everything runs pretty well but ever since my hard drive copped out, my computer wouldn't let me run things I could previously run. For example I recently downloaded Windows Live Movie Maker (something I could run previously) but when I try to run it now it says I don't have the proper system requirements.

It won't let me run any games either, which again is something I could do before my hard Drive copped out. It's like my computer "forgot" what it could do.

Is this just because I changed the operating system or is it something to do with the computer itself? Any advice would be great.

Ever tried starting it in a XP compatibility mode? Also I was given to understand that there is a built-in virtualization software, but I don't have Win 7, so no idea how it works.

Did you reinstall your games on the new operating system ? If so then the cause is probably sometyhing to do with directx, or your graphics drivers perhaps.

I've never heard of a battery wiping out a harddrive, and its unlikely you hdd would fail so soon. Probably was faulty, or something else. From what I remember the latest windows movie maker does not work with windows 7.

It keeps telling me I don't have the correct system requirements, and that my computer cannot run Direct X9 even though it could previously.

I've never heard of a game checking the hard-drive for specs (apart from STALKER... I had that game for months before I first played it because it rather snootily refused to run on my PC) so something else might have been damaged along with your HD.

Try running a few different games on it, especially some older ones (an old Sim City game would work best, since their requirements are fantastically low) to see if you can run games at all or if it's just new ones. Also, try running a movie or someting else graphically intinsive and see if that works.

How old are the games you're trying to run ? You may need to run them in compatibility mode. Also what bit is your OS ? Some games may not work on a 64 bit system that work fine on 32 bit. Also you should download the latest drivers for your video card and download DirectX9 because I believe the native directX for windows 7 is 11. Also make sure to download the latest directX11 drivers.

Edit:These links should get you settled out

Sorry not trying to break forum rules here as I have nothing relevant to add, but I've always been curious why people with computer problems post for advice on this site. Not that you won't get great advice here, but if you actually check out some real pc help forums they will take a look at your sys diagnostic and help you fix the problem even if you are a complete n00b (like me). I dunno I figure if I want cooking advice I'd go to a cooking forum. If I want PC advice I go to a PC forum.
Just curious as to why the OP decided to ask here instead of on an actual help site.

This is a gaming site with a lot of PC gamers. Trust me most of what I know about computers is from troubleshooting problems I have with games. We may not be PC analysts but with such a wide range of computer problems it's best to go to people who are specialized in the field you need help in.

I agree...That's why I wondered why you wouldn't go to a pc help forum. It's for people who specialize in pc help. I've been on some in the past (before I switched to mac anyhow) and there were sub categories for game troubleshooting. Most of the time it's actually real people who fix problems on pc's for a living on those sites, whereas here you might get some advice that might seriously mess up your system. Not saying that WILL happen but it's more likely to happen here because this isn't a PC help forum.
Anyhow this site isn't so bad for the advice, most people here are pretty helpful and know what they are talking about, I guess it just wouldn't be my first choice is all.

But don't get me wrong - love the forums here and the majority of the people on here make for some pretty awesome discussions.

Anyhow good luck with your pc problems, hope they get fixed. Thanks for humouring me ^_^

Sounds like you might have a broken GPU perhaps. Try running some stress tests. If they're exceptionally low then you need to check your warranty.

running some stress tests might help. Also did you format your hard drive after the crash?
Thanks for all the help people! As it turns out all I had to do was download the graphics drives again. All is well in Laptop land again.
