Nehrim: A New Twist On an Old RPG Finally Sees the Light

The English language translation of Nehrim, the massive, 50-hour total conversion of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion [http://www.amazon.com/Elder-Scrolls-IV-Oblivion-Game-Pc/dp/B000V9C9FO/ref=sr_1_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1284428611&sr=1-2], has finally been released.

Can you believe it's been four and a half years since Bethesda [http://www.bethsoft.com] released Oblivion, the fourth and, even after all this time, most recent addition to the Elder Scrolls RPG franchise? Which means that by now, the odds are pretty good that you've played it, beat it and moved on to other things. But for gamers who still have a thirst for expansive, first-person RPG action, there really hasn't been anything in the intervening years that's come along and filled the void it left. Until now!

Nehrim is a free "total conversion" that changes the original Oblivion into a functionally similar yet otherwise entirely different game. It's still a first-person fantasy RPG but any other similarities are purely coincidental. "Our project Nehrim does not fit into Oblivion at all," the Nehrim team explained on its website. "What we did is build an entirely new, discrete world that has nothing to do with Tamriel and the TES Universe."

Despite being both fan-made and free, Nehrim pulls no punches. The game's land mass is comparable to that found in Oblivion, yet the team claims the entire landscape is "hand-built" in order to avoid the monotony of the forests of Tamriel. The main plot includes 35 individual quests, adding up to an estimated 50 hours of playtime, and there are roughly 30 more side-quests to choose from. The skill system has been overhauled completely and "fast travel" has been eliminated in favor of specific teleport spells and the "mark" and "return" spells from Morrowind [http://www.amazon.com/Elder-Scrolls-Morrowind-Game-Year-Pc/dp/B0000CNUUP/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1284428997&sr=1-1]. Nehrim also boasts a huge, all-new soundtrack and over 50 unique voices provided by professional voice actors, more than in Oblivion itself.

Of course, if you happen to be German then you've had access to Nehrim since early June and this probably doesn't seem all that exciting to you, but for RPG fans who don't speak the language, it's good news indeed. Nehrim is 1.6 GB in size and requires only the basic installation of Oblivion to operate; nehrim.de [http://www.amazon.com/Elder-Scrolls-IV-Shivering-Isles-Pc/dp/B000NGRIDI/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1284429048&sr=1-1].

Played the german version when I heard about some sorta awesome new total conversion for Oblivion. Looked really good, except it was in German which I can't read :\

Will be finally nice to know whats happening. Too bad I'm playing through GTA:VC and soon SA when I find it again.

Now if we could just get all those countries around Cyrodiil to finally be completed like Hammerfall and the one thats all woods :p

I've never had an interest in using a computer as a console, but lately, there have been more and more reasons for me to ditch the laptop in favor of a desktop.

I just got a new computer, so I'm kinda looking for things to fill it up with. This would make a nice addition to my games list :)
It should keep me entertained, at least until New Vegas comes out.

I get nervous when I fiddle around with my computer, so I have yet to do any extensive mod-downloading as of yet. If I get Oblivion for the PC then I might consider downloading it, but I'm always really nervous I'm going to fuck up my computer (yet again!) if I download something I don't know.

This is AMAZING. Sometimes I forget that Oblivion modding isn't all about high def boobs, which is an easy impression to get if you look through TESNexus. There's a massive amount of talent out there. I'll be checking this out. I hope the writing is up to par... that's what kills a lot of otherwise solid mods for me.

Yeah, it's hard to shake the impression that Oblivion modding is nothing other than breasts.

I will definitely try this out once I get a chance, even though I really didn't like Oblivion. It sounds more interesting than the actual game.

Yes you need Oblivion installed...but if you have a normal edition it installs sperate to keep your other mods safe but if you have the steam version like me you have to have everything installed together and disable all your other mods..not that hard but it's worth it ive about an hour in and its fun.

You'll have to excuse, I'm fairly computer illiterate. If I download it now and buy oblivion later, can I install the mod when I've installed the game without re-downloading the mod? I will be buying a hard copy of it from amazon or somewhere.

I remember vaguely hearing about this mod, so this is exciting news!

Oblivion is what made me buy a new computer a couple years ago because it killed my prior PC to run. Mods for the game are so good that I would actually pay for the user-made ones over some of the official ones ha ha!

With Oblivion and Morrowind, I found the modding quite user-friendly if you stick with just a few mods. I would recommend reading a few basic tutorials so you get the gist of everything and just stick with a few sites like TES Nexus and planeteldeerscrolls for the downloads. The worst that could happen is you would have to just reinstall the game and try to figure out where the mods conflicted (for example).

Just finished reading the Nehrim website, and this looks Fing awesome. It's hard to beat Free.

I didn't even see a clear way to Donate to the creators, and if this is even close to as enjoyable as Oblivion was I'd be happy to donate a few bucks.

Thanks Andy, hearing about things like this is half the reason I visit The Escapist... The other half being the videos. =D

Commencing download!

I have a hate/love relationship (if you can call it that) with Oblivion. For one reason or another, since it was released in 2006 and I got my hands on it, I've never, EVER be able to beat the thing, for one reason or another. Most recently, I tried to beat it on the 360 (when I had the console) and for some sort of stupidity and my failure at handling my 360 saves, I deleted it half-way through the game and I was pissed (that was not the reason for selling the 360, if you ask).

OT: This mod looks really cool, looks like the perfect excuse to reinstall the game and, hopefully, will beat the thing before anything happens...

EDIT: Just watched the Nehrim site and I'm downloading it as we speak. This particular quote got me pumped on playing the thing:

"There is something to discover at every corner in Nehrim. Monotonous woods and impassionately designed dungeons? Not here! And honestly: Who wants to wander through landscapes you can find outside your own home? Nehrim includes sets of landscapes that have never been implemented in any game before."
