So in a Japan-only Nintendo Direct just now two 3DS models called New 3DS and New 3DS LL were announced with
-A small analog nub they're calling the C-stick
-Two new shoulder buttons
-Micro SD support
-Better 3D viewing angles, no longer have to hold it in a certain spot
-An improved CPU meaning larger games and a faster OS
-A better screen (not sure in what way)
-Faster internet connectivity
-Removable backplate
-Customizable faceplates on the regular-sized version
-Amiibo support outof the box.
-Exclusive games such as a port of Xenoblade Chronicles being made

So what are your thoughts?

Ooh, wouldn't mind trading in my current 3DS XL for one of those, if its not too much of course, all the listed improvements sound like solid investments to me! Wonder if my XL cover would fit though, probably not.
I doubt it, it seems to me they're making the XL more compact and the regular a bit bigger.

Oh, and I'll edit it to say exclusives being made, not ported.

But the gamecube C-stick is utterly terrible if you are male and an adult, it's like flicking a midgets nipple.

At any rate, bigger and more buttons = sold.

I don't travel with these thins in pocket I put them in my backpack. Moar size is always welcome.

My Japanese is not nearly good enough to understand everything but it looks like there will be games exclusive only to these New 3DS versions, the Xenoblade Chronicles port being one of them. Something about the increased processing power being needed.

It's really nothing new since a similar thing happened with the DS -> DSi, but barring some exceptions like Shantae: Risky's Revenge, pretty much all of the DSi exclusives were pretty meh, so you didn't really miss a lot.

But still, if I'm right, I'm hoping New 3DS exclusivity is not going to be too much of a thing. It would be a shame for so many people to potentially miss out on quality games just because they jumped on the 3DS train too early.

I still don't have an XL so I'm interested. I wouldn't bought right away if it had a 2nd circle pad and not this c stick nub tho ;p

Now the thing is are there going to be games your need the "New" 3ds to play like talking about the xenoblade chronicles port ;p

The Colored Buttons are a nice touch.

I'm kinda upset about this, especially that there are games exclusive to the New 3DS. It kinda makes me feel like a chump for buying a Circle Pad Pro. Now, if releasing games exclusive to the New 3DS is only going to be a rare occurrence and they release more games that can be played on both a New 3DS and a standard 3DS with a Circle Pad Pro, I'll be fine with it. Maybe a bit happier, since it will mean I'll get more use out of the Circle Pad Pro than just Monster Hunter. Also, this makes it really likely that Smash Bros. 3DS will have Circle Pad Pro support, which is awesome.

I dunno. The images I've seen of the New 3DS make it look like any games which require you to use the second stick regularly as a second analogue stick would be massively cramp-inducing. It's just so small, and in kind of a weird spot.

Also, let me say that while I like the idea of the new system, I'll be pissed if Nintendo doesn't give me a way to transfer my downloaded games from one console to the other.

I'd be surprised if it doesn't have the System Transfer capabilities like the 3DS to 3DS XL does, or the Wii to Wii U.

So, as long as you have both systems physically there, you should hopefully be able to transfer all your Downloads and such to the N3DS/XL.

Maybe it's because I just bought a 3DS XL earlier this year and I'm just bitter, but I'm not sold. I already have a Circle Pad Pro, and I turn off the 3D 98% of the time, so the only improvement for me is a faster CPU.

At this point, I kind of have to wonder why they didn't hold off just a bit longer and make a full-fledged 3DS 2, especially since there'll be exclusive games for it. I kind of see this going the way of the Gameboy Color.

Huh, has Nintendo ever considered getting it right in the first place?

I mean, I'm sure this is great for everyone looking to buy a new 3DS, but, why didn't they do this in the first place?

Or, just two actual analogue sticks rather than this stupid looking small thing.

It neat, it's cool, and I may get one since my original 3DS is starting to show it's age. However! Will it still be able to play original DS games? I use my 3DS for DS games as well, so it would suck if it does not have backwards compatibility.

I'd assume "yes" until I hear otherwise.

If they put DS compatibility in the bare-bones-by-design 2DS, I don't see any reason why they would take it out of the newest model.

According to a Q & A that came out for the announcement, it appears it still has the ability to play DS games. That certainly makes it even more appealing to me.

Here's the Q & A if anyone is interested in more information.

I just hope it'll improve the functions of older 3DS games. I wonder if it'll make Pokemon-Amie actually useable.

The thing that still irks me about this is people keep on saying, "well, if you got a 3DS already and want to play the New3DS[footnote]Ninty, please change the name at least a little for the North American, Australian and European markets. Your console names are starting to confuse even game savvy people, not just soccer moms looking for Timmy's birthday present.[/footnote]games to just trade in your 3DS." Well, what about people like me who don't like seeing something they paid a lot of hard earned money for go across the counter and only chump change come back? (I you like doing that. It's fine by me.) Looking at Gamestop's trade-in and resale values, they give you about $85 for a 3DS XL then turn around and sell it for $175, and the mom and pop shops can't have a much better offer as a mega corp on hardware. Yes, you get a small warranty compared to buying a friend's system or off the List of Craig. It still hurts my pride either way, doing a trade in like that. Another thing that puts people like me in a difficult position is I got the limited edition Zelda 3DS XL, and I don't want to trade it in. I bought last year fully expecting it to last as the go to system for Nintendo's handheld games for at least 2 more years.

I really, really hope that either most games come out with dual support for both systems (maybe higher res textures more characters on screen or more polygons on the newer system), Nintendo releases separate carts for most games so older 3DS owners aren't screwed,[footnote]How many kids are gonna want a new game exclusive to this new thing only to be told no, by parents, since they just got a 2DS? And how many of us are feeling the burn from not being made out of cash and just bought a 3DS?[/footnote] or very few games are released for this particular unit specifically.

Although, seeing as it was a Japan only Nintendo Direct, maybe it's just for the Japanese market (or that is their test market for the new system) and the next true generation is still 2 years away, like I said in the main article's thread. Ninty is still trying to get Wii U's and its games sold. Why give it another competitor so soon? The original DS lasted 7 years until the 3DS came along, with the slight revamp of the DSi coming out 5 years after the DS. The 3DS is still going strong, so they must consider this just the slight revamp if they wish to avoid angering their customers with constant hardware changes. (Which is why many say they're sticking with the Wii U for the entire console generation, a smart decision.)
