New Channels on The Escapist

Today we are rolling out the new channels for The Escapist. We're adding some new options for you to check out and enjoy. The channels are Video Games, Movies & TV, Comics & Cosplay, Tabletop, and Science & Tech. Play around with the new channels - they're at the top of the page - look around and see what's new to the site.

We would appreciate your feedback regarding the additions to the site. So please, give us your two cents regarding the changes, our ears are open. Above all enjoy the new channels, they're there for you.

I like the look, and it'll be nice to have articles sorted out a little more.
The only issue I have is that I can't see my inbox immediately when the window's snapped to half-screen, I have to scroll over. No major complaints here though.

No, this is worse than all the youtube layouts.
Maybe add a feature so you can have it look like it used to, but currently I am disgusted by this layout.

I like it except for the hard-to-see fonts for the "my escapist/forums/store, etc"

Could use with a little bit more contrast

I like the channels thing, it makes finding stuff of a similar genre easier but if you're not sure what genre things have been classified as, you could spend a little bit more time browsing through stuff. Which I don't really mind, consider it growing pains I suppose.

Overall, I kinda like it. Users hate having their website changed and the first thing everybody is going to do is say "I hate this, change it back" but I don't mind it at all.

Remember when they changed the site last time, the big overhaul? I'm not sure if that was 2010 or 2011 but the community collectively shit itself.

People got used to it though, they just don't like change.

OP: It seems okay, need to explore it a bit more and get used to it but it doesn't offend me or anything.

It's not too bad, in 6 months I probably wont even remember the old format. Plus, the existence of a science and tech section intrigues me.

Edit (because it's not worth almost double posting over) I find it slightly amusing that you have accidentally chosen the exact shades used by each of the main UK political parties.

It's fine. I got suprised when I clicked to go to a user's profile and it changed in-between, but I wish the tabs all looked different instead of looking the same. Oh well. Time for the "next-gen" layout of The Escapist, am I right?

Well the forums haven't really changed so I don't mind the update. Hopefully it will lead to speedier loading times, it looks a lot smoother so far.

Just so you know the menubar doesn't display very nicely when the window only takes up one horizontal half of the screen (which is how I typically browse).

Eh, can't say I'm a fan of the new layout...but that's probably as much due to its comparative unfamiliarity as anything else...and the fact that the store button is where the forums drop-down used to be (damn muscle memory). *Shrug* I'll get used to it, I suppose.

So will ALL content show up under the "Latest" tab? I found it annoying how if I wanted to have every news, video and column update in one spot, I'd have to dig through the News tab, rather than having it on the front page.

Well this is disgusting. I don't know what design scheme you were going for but what you've got is what I like to call the 'Myspace Geocities look'. That's not a complement by the way. This site's design sensibilities have always been questionable but this is especially garish and please decide on one design paradigm and use it. Either tabbed categories OR single item columns OR three-column newspaper style pages. C'mon guys, let's try for some consistency here.

Also guys, seriously, you need a dynamic width layout or at least a narrow layout. It's 2014 and mobile devices are a thing.

It's a much better layout. You can actually find the non-forum content now. You'll get used to it.

As someone who's had this layout for a month, this is significantly better than anything Youtube ever did.

I actually really like the new layout. You can skip right to the content you want, which is really neat.

I will agree with this, though- the font is just too thin and not contrasting enough with the background. Dark gray on a lighter gray just makes it slightly difficult to read.
Besides that, I dig it.

Before I only needed one page for me to know everything I needed to. Now I need 5 pages.
That is what I call a downgrade.
